"I've decided!" Flanna announces as we lie down in the field of flowers behind my house.
"Decided on what?" I ask, not bothering to look at her. There's no reason to, there's a wall of tall flowers between us.
"The first challenge! I'm going to make Chocolate Cannestrelli!"
"Wonderful. What's this first challenge, though?" See, I thought it was one of those things where the best bread gets a ribbon, but so do the best cookies, and the best cake.
"Oh, yeah! It starts off as a family competition, with three rounds! First cookies, second cake, third bread! Then, the two youngest members compete against each other! But you have to be 13 to do that! So it's been my dad for the past years! But finally! I get to face off against Pamela Cooper!"
"So she's the one you've been ranting about. You've never once said her first name."
"I haven't? Oh. Anywho! I'm psyched! This is so exciting! I got a recipe for Chocolate Cannestrelli online and-"
"No. Come with me," I say, sitting up. Flanna follows me into my house as I dig around in boxes from deep inside the closet.
"Here," I say, handing her a small, time-worn cookbook, and putting everything back.
"You had a cookbook?! And didn't use it?!" Flanna exclaims, flipping through the book.
"I forgot about it." I defend, closing the closet.
"But this is incredible! All the recipes are so detailed!"
"Nana wanted them to be idiot-proof."
"Can I practice? I need this recipe down pat for the competition!"
"Sure, I think we have everything we need for Chocolate Cannestrelli."
So Flanna and I bake, and bake, and bake. And sure enough, Nana's recipe was idiot-proof, they were perfect every time. Didn't stop her from trying it over, and over, and over again. Byt he end, we had close to 125 cookies. Flanna took most of them home with her in a big, plastic Tupperware.
I, after Flanna left, looked up all this Baking Competition stuff. So, basically, five rounds, three as a family, cookies, cake, and bread. Then, the two youngest, as soon as they turn 13, compete, making a dessert, and something for dinner. Then, the winner is announced, and are given a trophy, and a bouquet.
Then, the day after is the ball, and then the first day of school. However, the ball is also when we get our schedules, which is weird because I thought it was the first day of school.
