The boy's face was glaring at me. 'What did I do?'
He walked over to Mrs. Days as Jen came into the room, whispered something to her, and then turned to stare at me again while Mrs. Days glared at him.
"Maggie, this is Tanner. He's my--"
"Jen, I can introduce myself," he seethed. Instinctively I took a step back--right into the fridge. "I'm sorry." 'It didn't sound like it....' "I didn't mean to frighten you." 'Oh, of course not.' He then left the room with his fists clenched.
"See you," I whispered. Jen came over to me and gave me a sympathetic look.
"It's not you."
"Then what is it?"
"...Complicated."
"Humph."
Mrs. Days came up to us and whispered something to Jen, who whispered back. I looked at Jen, then her mom, annoyed.
"Hey, want to see my room?"
Immediately I brightened up and I nodded my head. She gestured for me to follow and she led me out of the kitchen...into the dining room...and up the spiral staircase. There were three doors, all on the right. The one closest to the stairs was green and said 'Stay Out!' the next one was yellow and blue. The last one was pale blue and mahogany.
Jen entered the blue and mahogany one. Inside there was a big couch, and a closet to the side, with two more doors beside the bed and closet: one was all mahogany, the other all pale blue. She opened the pale blue door.
Inside were two more doors: a pale blue with mahogany spots, and a mahogany with pale blue splotches. She opened the spotted one.
This room had brightly painted walls and cupboards with labels saying 'paint' or 'clay' on them.
"The art room."
There were a bunch of easels scattered around the room, too. She let me roam, and when I was done we exited and she opened the splotched door.
This room was filled with boxes upon boxes. She pointed to one, and I opened it. There were pictures of Jen and Tanner. They looked sick...and Jen had bright blue eyes, not like the tawny ones she has now. She also looked...normal.
Jen led me out, closed the door, and then we walked out the blue door, and opened the mahogany door.
The room was blank. It had white walls, white floor, and no windows. Blank. It was nearly impossible to see the difference between the walls and the floor.
"It's so...bland!" I said, disgusted by the optical illusion.
"We get to do whatever we want with this room. It's my favourite. I stay in here a lot, just thinking of the perfect thing to do with it."
"Seriously? I thought the art room would be your favourite."
"No, art is Tanner's talent. He let me paint the walls, but he told me where to put every one of the colours. He didn't want me to use up 'his easels.'"
"Well that's selfish...."
"No, he's much better than me. Trust me, art isn't my passion."
"Then what is?"
"Well...I suppose...helping people." Then she led me out of the room.
She walked out the mahogany door, and into her room.
'This is my chance,' I thought. 'I can ask her now.' "Jen, you remember my reason for coming here, right?"
"Yes..."
"Well, time to talk!" I closed the door and then sat on her couch, patting beside me. "Are you one?"
"Am I one what?"
After sighing in exasperation I said, "A...you know...?"
"Say it. Out loud. Speak now or forever hold your peace."
I hesitated. 'That's sort of what Edward said to Bella...but...was I really going to ask her that?' "Are you a...vampire?"
"I don't know, am I?"
"You are a vampire."
She sighed happily. "I am so glad I don't have to keep this from you anymore! But don't you want to know what we eat?"
"Um...yes."
"Blood. But, not human."
"Animal blood then."
"Yes. And you have to know ho - "
"JEN HOW COULD YOU LET HER FIND OUT?"
"Tanner, she was more observant than I thought! I tried to act like a human around her, but she saw through! It's not my fault!"
"Yeah, well, now we have to kill her. Good luck with that," he spat. My eyes widened in horror, and a look of pain crossed onto Tanner's face. "Maggie I...please, don't look at me like that...Mag...." He reached towards me but then ran out of the room.
"What was that all about?" I asked, confused.
"It's...complicated."
"Humph."
"I think he should tell you. It's really none of my business."
"So...are you all vampires then?"
"Yes."
"How long...?"
"A...while."
I glared at her. "How old are you, Jen?"
"14."
"How long have you been 14?"
"...A...while...."
"How long, Jen?"
She glared at me. "A few years."
"Your mom will tell me - "
"No she won't."
"You just...didn't you?" She nodded. She had just used her speed to tell everyone not to tell me. 'Great.' Or her family could have just heard her say 'No she won't.'
"The second one."
"Can you read my mind or something?"
"Yes. It's a special power that I have."
"Does the rest of your family have powers?"
"Dad and Tanner do."
I gave her a meaningful look.
"Dad can...well, just ask him. And you can ask Tanner what his 'specialty' is."
"Ok. I will. Right now." I walked out of the room and made it to the stairs, and when I started walking down them Jen appeared in front of me.
"Ah! Don't do that! It freaks me out!"
She just laughed and then disappeared again.
