20 years after the near destruction of society, the neo-utopia of Alkaline is facing a poverty crisis. The government has announced a plan to end the crisis, but the information on the specifics of the plan are oddly difficult to come by. The need for government action is growing, too, with the introduction of a new street drug called Tangent. It's replacing the Fentanyl in Chiva Blanca, and it's deadly.
20-year-old Corey has been around and using heroin since he started selling his used testosterone needles to addicts at 16. He's malnourished and close to death even before he unknowingly injects Tangent.
25-year-old Landon is the good-natured leader of the Red Teeth, the gang that runs the Electrical district of Alkaline. He's doing his best to monitor his drug runners, but he's been too busy with gang-related conflicts to monitor is as closely as he'd like to.
When Landon saves Corey from what should have been a fatal overdose, their fates become irreversibly intertwined.
What is Tangent? Where did it come from, and who's pushing it? Why did Corey, already frail and close to death, survive the overdose when no others did? And why does Corey keep seeing things happen before they actually do?
It would probably be easier to figure everything out if the team consisted of something other than a junkie and a person who operates on a grand total of one braincell, but Corey and Landon will have to work with what they've got.
