I've done some research online about werewolves and this is what I know so far.
"In folklore, a werewolf, or occasionally lycanthrope, is a human with the ability to shapeshift into a wolf, either purposely or after being placed under a curse or affliction and especially on the night of a full moon" - Wikipedia
"Abilities: Superhuman speed, superhuman endurance, healing factor, superhuman strength, shapeshifting, night vision, superhuman senses and superhuman agility."
I ended up reading an article from the History Channel " Werewolf Legends ".
It all seems farfetched. Maybe Felix is just messing with me? He hasn't lied to me yet through, why would he choose to lie about this?
I decide to stop researching this for today. I have to think about this later. Tomorrow is the Fall Festival at the library and I need to rest up. I go to bed.
My alarm goes off and it's time to go to work. I take my Halloween costume with me to change into later.
When I get to work there are still some
preparations to finish up before the Festival begins.
I meet up with Harvey. He is always well organized and anticipates everything. He's the brains and I'm just the muscle.
He has the vendors check in and assigns them their booths. He makes sure they have power or access to anything they need to run their shops. He has the permits ready for compliance. He hired some security to help with directing traffic and got the school near by to let us use their parking lot for guests. He's thought of everything and it's really his direction that makes the Fall Festival successful.
Harvey gives me a list of things to help him with and I go off running. We got two hours before the Festival starts.
We manage to put out some small fires, figuratively. Then set one, when a BBQ shop had trouble getting their propane grill started.
It's Four o'clock and the Fall Festival is open.
Families, neighbors, friends and a lot of the community come out. It's so satisfying to see so many happy people.
I have to get into my costume. I need to be the Master of Ceremonies for the contests and the raffle.
I adjusts my hat as I look at myself in the mirror. I guess being a pirate isn't so bad. I kinda look cool.
I walk out into the Festival. I head to the main stage, there is a pumpkin carving contest happening soon.
I get a tap on my shoulder and when I turn around its Cindy. "What the hell? What are you doing here?" I ask her but she's too busy snapping a photo of me with her phone.
"Wait till my brother sees this!" Then she starts laughing hysterically.
A lot of different emotions wash over me. Anger, rage, surprise, fear, anxiety, embarrassment and desperation. "You're the worst. This is for charity. You suck." I leave in a huff. I hope I at least looked good in that picture .
After the pumpkin carving contest, there was a costume parade. Everyone was invited to circle around the stage and show off their costumes. It's mostly parents and their kids. However there is one person who stands out. It's Felix and he's dressed as a knight.
Felix dressed as a knight is terribly difficult on me. He is so hot.
The parade ends and I lose sight of Felix, but that's because he coming up behind me. "Michael, you look so handsome in your costume. Pirate clothes suite you." Felix hugs me from behind in a sneak attack I wasn't expecting.
I shrug him off. I can't really look at him in his costume so I just reply, "Um, thanks. You too."
He laughs, then he takes me by the hand and starts leading me towards some of the booths. "Lets have some fun together."
I tug on his hand and break loose. "Sorry Felix, but this is work for me. I'm not here to have fun. There are still some contests and the raffle; I have to judge."
Felix looks like I just burst his bubble. "When the contests and raffle are over, do you wanna enjoy the Festival together? I'll wait. I actually bought a few raffle tickets."
"What are you gonna do with a big screen television? "
He smiles and then whispers in my ear, " I want to win the fancy dinner for two. "
When he steps back I'm sure I was blushing but I'm not sure what expression I was making because Felix said, "If you look at me like that, it makes it hard for me not to kiss you."
I turn around and start waking back to the main stage, I look back and say, "I'll see you after I'm done working."
" Okay! I'll be waiting. "
How can he do that to me? I don't know what to do. I'm all flustered! Now I got a knot in my stomach. I peek back at Felix and he's starring at me. I turn around again. Focus on work!
It's time for the raffle. Harvey and I get on stage with a huge plastic cauldron filled with raffle tickets. Harvey starts it off. The first winner gets the television. I choose the next raffle ticket and that person chooses the gaming system. All that's left is the fancy dinner for two. Harvey chooses that raffle ticket.
As Harvey reaches into the cauldron and swirls the tickets around, I begin to imagine Felix and I sitting at a candle lit dinner at a fancy restaurant. Harvey calls out the winners name, "Hanna Smith number 4634297". He didn't win.
I felt disappointed but what were the odds he'd really win anyway? Hanna makes her way up to the stage and I recognize her right away. It's the barista from Carefree Coffee.
"Congratulations to all our winners. There's gonna be a dance contest in 10 minutes. Winners get a voucher good for a free meal from any of our booths." Says Harvey
I hand Hanna the certificate for the fancy dinner and congratulate her. "You won! Congratulations. I hope you enjoy your prize." She accepts the certificate and thanks me. "I never win anything. I was hoping for the game system but I'm happy just to win something." She looks at the paper and she has a sad expression on her face. "Is something wrong? Are you that disappointed it's not the gaming system?" Hanna smiles, " No, sorry. This restaurant is someplace my sister had been hoping to try out sometime but she passed away at work recently. "Hanna begins to tear up, "She was a cashier at a convenience store. Sorry, I gotta go." Hanna runs away crying.
I instinctively run after her but I lose her in the crowd. I hear Harvey announce, "The dance contest is about to begin. All contestants please come out into the dance floor." I'm torn between trying to find Hanna or helping Harvey judge the contest. I get a phone call, it's Harvey. "Where are you? The contest is about to start."
"Sorry Harvey. Something just came up but I'll be right there."
I start walking back to the stage. Felix suddenly appears in front of me. "Are you okay? You look upset."
" I'm alright. I gotta help judge the dance contest. "
Felix hops up and down a little. "I'm gonna enter the contest."
" What? With who? "
"Are you jealous? Do you wanna dance with me?"
" I can't. I'm judging it, dummy. " I say and then I walk faster to the stage. I get on stage with Harvey and the dance contest begins.
The music begins to play and couples are dancing all over the floor. I try to find Felix but it's not hard to spot him. Him and his dance partner really stand out. Felix is dancing with Cindy and they are good. It's not long before there are only a hand full of couples left and one couple is Felix and Cindy. I tell Harvey, "I have to recluse myself. One of the couple's are my friends. Can you judge this without me?"
" Sure, you're so honest Michael. " he laughs. "I'll pick the best dancers alone because we want to keep the integrity of this Halloween dance contest above board." Then laugh harder.
"Forget it." I walk away. I leave the stage and wait for the contest to end. I hear Harvey announce, "The winners are the couple on the left. The young lady and her knight!". Felix won. He is a good dancer. I kinda wish I could've danced with him too.
Felix comes running up to me. "We won!" Cindy is walking up behind him. "Yes we did. Now remember, you promised me something if we won. Keep your promise." She said and began walking off. As she leaves she waves goodbye and says, "You two have fun" in a teasing tone that makes me mad.
"Michael, that was the last contest right? Can we enjoy the Festival together now?"
" Sure. The festival is open for two more hours, till eight and then I gotta help with clean up though. "
"That's okay. Unfortunately, I got to leave soon too."
" Why? "
"Um, well. Michael, tonight is a full moon. It's still early but I got to leave before it gets dark."
"Oh. Yes, sure, of course." I don't know how to react to that so I just start walking. "How do you like the Festival?" I'm so lame. Changing the subject so dramatically.
Felix puts his arm around me, "I think I'm gonna start having a lot more fun now."
I brush his arm off my shoulder and ask him, "What do you wanna do first?"
" I'm not sure if you know this, but I won the dance contest. The prize was a voucher for a free meal at any booth. Are you hungry? "Okay. Which booth do you wanna try out?"
"You're not gonna say anything about my dance moves?"
"You're a good dancer Felix, or else you wouldn't have won the contest. "
Felix hugs me from behind and in a whining voice says, " Ah, I was hoping you'd say I looked so sexy dancing that you couldn't take your eyes off me. "
I break free from his hug and grab his hand and start walk to the nearest booth. "Stop messing around. I'm hungry."
The nearest booth is a ring toss. I let go of Felix's hand and ask, "What are you in the mood to eat?"
"Honestly. You... Um, you wanna try any games?"
That pause was awkward. I start laughing. Felix starts laughing. We start waking around the Festival. It's nice. The weather is cool and crisp. The energy from the crowd is happy and enthusiastic. I kinda wish I could hold Felix's hand.
We decide to eat from the BBQ place where I helped light their grill. They slipped us some extra ribs. We sit at one of the tables in the picnic area set up for dinning. It's getting late and most of the families have gone home. It's mostly couples left for the last hour of the Festival.
"This booth is pretty popular, I hope you like it."
Felix laughs, "Michael, I'm a werewolf. Of course I like ribs."
I look around to see if anyone heard him. Everyone is busy having a good time.
"Is it okay for you just to admit that so easily?"
"No one's gonna believe me. Even you still doubt it, right?"
"I guess." I start eating my ribs. The ribs are slathered in BBQ sauce and it's pretty messy to eat. I'm trying my best but I am still getting sauce all over my fingers. I start licking my fingers clean when Felix grabs my hand and licks some of the sauce off too. I pull my hand away. "What are you doing?"
He looks at me intensely and says, "You have BBQ sauce all over your mouth too."
Ah! My heart, I can't take it!
I lick my lips. "You're right. I'm gonna go get us some napkins." I run away like a coward. I can't believe he did that. What's going on?
I walk back with the napkins and Felix is gone. Oh, no. Where did he go? Where is he? I look around but the few couples that are left are leaving.
I start walking back to the stage and I see Felix standing near the library. I start walking over to him, but he's just standing still. He usually runs over to me whenever he sees me.
I walk up to him and he looks unhappy. "Are you okay? Is something wrong?"
" Oh, um. Well, it's time for me to go. "
"Oh, okay. You don't have to look so sad. I'll see you soon right?"
" Yeah. " Something about the tone of his voice and the look on his face is so heartbreaking.
I take his hand and then pull him into a hug, "You can tell me if somethings wrong."
He puts his head on my shoulder. "I can't tell you."
I hug him extra tight. He squeezes me back. We look at each other and I bite my lip. He cups my face in his hand and it feels like he's gonna kiss me, but he just is looking at me.
"I..." Felix looks like he wants to say something
"I have to go. Good night." He doesn't move though. I just keeps still.
"Okay, good night." Then I lean in and gently kiss him.
Felix squeeze me tight and kisses me deeply. He licks my lips and says "You still have BBQ sauce on your mouth." Then he kissed me again .
"Woah, wait a minute. You were so miserable a moment ago."
" Michael, when Cindy and I won the dance contest; my sister made me promise not to kiss you tonight. She said if you kissed me then I could kiss you, but you had to kiss me first. I also couldn't tell you why. Seeing you covered in BBQ sauce was too much for me, so I ran away."
What!? Cindy I knew I didn't like you!
Felix leans in to kiss me again and I cover his mouth with my hand. "I think you said you had to leave before it gets dark." Felix licks my fingers. I pull my hand away but he holds on to it.
"You're still covered in BBQ sauce. It makes me walk to eat you up, but you're right. I should go." Felix kisses my hand "Good night." Then he starts walking towards the front of the Festival. "I'll call you later!" He yelled and started waving good bye.
Cindy! Felix! Both of them are idiots.
I sit down by the stage. I am overwhelmed by tonight's game Cindy orchestrated.
I gotta focus on cleaning up.
I sigh a deep sigh.
Harvey walks to go me and says, "We haven't even started cleaning up and you look terrible."
"Trick or treat... Well, I got tricked tonight Harvey."
"It also looked like you got a treat from what I saw just now at the library."
" What? You saw? "
"Yeah, you two weren't exactly hiding. Whose the guy?"
"Can we not talk about it and just start cleaning up?'
Harvey laughs. "Okay. I caught you two once, I'm sure it'll happen again"
"It's not like that Harvey!" However , Harvey is already walking away. How embarrassing.
The moon begins to rise.
I focus on cleaning up with the crew Harvey hired. It's gets done quicker than I thought and I drive home. I go into my apartment and lock the door. I need to go to bed. I get ready for bed, but I can't sleep. I guess I have insomnia.
