A roar went up from the crowd.
The colours inside Iola’s mind grew more vivid, exploding all around, further pushing away her fears.
She saw Dacia raise her hand and bring it down in a sudden rush. Something flew out of her hand, gleaming in the late afternoon light.
Iola focused on the speeding object aimed at her head.
A jolt coursed all through her body, and then all of a sudden the blade staggered in mid-air, inches from her face and then a moment later it disappeared.
A loud thump sounded just behind her head as the dagger hit the wooden table.
Iola realised that the dagger had not slowed down. Instead it was her senses that had suddenly speeded up, allowing her to move her head by a hair’s breadth.
How that happened, she had not a clue.
Even more perplexing to her was how Dacia knew that she could do that. She was sure that the mercenary had aimed right for her head.
Or was it some highly practiced trick of her own that Dacia had employed?
Two more daggers hammered hard into the wood, on either side of her head.
The roar of the crowd was deafening and the colours exploding inside her head were blinding.
She could also hear voices, as if from far away or from under water. Something was happening to her, and she wasn’t sure if it was good or bad.
“Did you see that?” Dacia yelled at the crowds. “My next dagger will be aimed for her heart. Will anyone place a wager... a wager on her life? What odds will you take?”
Iola couldn’t believe her ears. But she didn’t experience fear; instead Dacia’s exuberance filled her with more courage than she had ever felt in her young life.
She watched the warrior woman make her way around the gathered city folk, chatting them up, taking wagers, and undoubtedly getting them to divulge the information they sought.
