Max and Detective Karl talked to each other as we made our way to the conference room that the meeting would be held. When we arrived, the tree of us took our seats in the room and waited. The majority of the people needed for the meeting were already there, but there were still a few people we needed to show up. Thankfully, it didn’t take long for the rest of the necessary people to trickle in.
When everyone was there, Max stood up and announced, “Let’s get started. Today we took Felix to the location where his body was found, which is information we withheld from him, and despite not knowing where he was, he made his way to the blood bath zone. This makes me believe that the two are most definitely connected. While on the journey to the blood bath zone, I made a discovery that leads me to announce that none of you will be needed for the case anymore.”
One of the women in the room interrupted, “what do you mean we will not be needed anymore? Have you solved the case?”
Max made eye contact with her, “no, the case is not solved, but none of you will be able to solve it. Our suspicion that this case may be on the spirit realm was confirmed by various things I noticed today combined with actions I have seen him do since I took custody of him.”
Detective Karl stood up, “What did you find? Are you sure there is nothing more we can do? We are all invested in this case now, and all would like answers.”
“I do not believe that I am allowed to share with you what I found today since it belongs to the spirits. I’m also positive that there is nothing you can do that I or my specialized team cannot do. The only thing I need from you guys at this point is to take down anything with Felix’s name or face. This case is now out of any of your reaches; this case belongs to me and the spirits now.”
I had no clue what he meant by spirits. Was that what I was, a spirit? Without thinking, I asked a question interrupting the meeting, “what is a spirit?”
One of the detectives answered me, “They are divine creatures outside of normal human comprehension. They exist and do what they do without the majority of the public knowing they are there.”
Max nodded his head, “I will explain more to you when we get back to the house. With that said, this meeting is closed. I thank all of you for your help in his case and hope you wish us luck on the spirit level to discover his story.”
Everyone gave a cheer and some clapped before filling out of the room. As Max and I began to leave the room I noticed how everything had happened so quickly, and it made me feel lost. The day’s events muddled my mind and confused me, causing a headache to come on.
“Come on Felix, let’s go home, so I can explain some things to you.” Max said as he walked towards the door to leave the conference room.
I quietly followed after him, and in our unsaid agreement, we walked and went home in silence. We got home late, and I was starving. Once we got home, exhaustion took over my body, and I started to feel relieved to be home. It was the first time all day that I realized how tired I really was. I stretched out onto the couch and without realizing it, I fell asleep right there
A warm feeling flooded my body while I slept. It was nice and comforting. Then, everything suddenly felt cold, and my body felt like it was in pain. I was panicked. Something was after me, but what?
Then, there was that familiar voice again. “Get out of here, now.”
Get out of where? Where was I? It hurt. Everything hurt, and I couldn’t see anything.
“Felix! You gotta stay with me.”
But why? Who was this? The voice was so familiar to me, but I couldn’t pick out who it belonged to. Then, I felt a strong blow to my head, I was fading away.
“I’m sorry.” The voice echoed.
For what? Who was sorry? Why were they apologizing? Then, it was all gone, and I didn’t even know what was there. I just knew that it was gone. What had happened? Was I asleep? I kept getting these strong feelings that there was something there in my head, but I couldn’t pull it out.
“Another nightmare?” Max asked me.
“I don’t know. I don’t know what any of it is.” I answered.
“It’s okay, We’ll figure this out. Are you ready for me to explain the spirits?”
“Spirits? What are you talking about?”
“The spirits we talked about in the meeting today.
“What meeting?”
“You don’t remember?”
“What am I supposed to remember?”
“Detective Karl and I took you to the place we found your body, and you ran to the blood bath area.”
“I did? When?”
“Earlier today. Then, we had a meeting, and the case was closed to the investigators and handed to the spirits.”
“What are spirits?”
“Well that’s what you and I are.”
“I’m not human?” I was so confused. I didn’t remember this meeting. What the hell was Max even talking about? “You’re joking, right?”
“No, I’m not. Let me explain some things to you. Humans refer to us as spirits. That’s all they know to call us, but there are 21 different types of these ‘spirits’. At this moment, I'm not a hundred percent sure what kind you are, but I’ve narrowed the list down while you slept.
I’m a spirit guardian. Guardians are typically the only spirits that are permitted to work closely with selected humans, who can be trusted. Some of the investigators know that I am a spirit, but most of them do not know this. They just believe that a spirit works with me so that spirit cases can be solved. It’s my job to help and protect the other types of spirits as well as keep human and spirit relations at peace.
Now that your case has been confirmed spirit related, I’m allowed to call together my team and potentially make you remember what happened.”
“I’m really confused.”
“That’s okay.”
“So what am I? Or what is it that you think I am?”
“Well you are a spirit. We don’t usually refer to ourselves as spirits, but rather our typing. Based on your behaviors, you're either a nature angel or a nature demon, but it’s kind of hard to tell at this point because I’d need to see your abilities.”
“What’s the difference between the two?”
“Well nature angels heal living things that need their help and nature demons aid living things in their travels to the next stage.”
“So one gives life and the other takes it?”
“Basically speaking yes. Based on the things you have said to me in the past, I believe you may be the demon counterpart.”
“I don’t want to be a demon!” I yelled at him.
“Why not?”
“They kill things. I don’t want to kill things!”
“Calm down, Felix. Nature demons don’t just kill, they end suffering. There comes a point in time in which all things must pass on, and most creatures in nature know this.
When they are ready to leave, they call for a nature demon to help them pass peacefully. The demon will listen to their plea for help and decide whether or not the living thing asking for help is ready to move on or not. It’s a difficult task, but demons aren’t there to just take life.
They don’t just kill, and they will turn down pleas for help if they feel something is acting too rashly. Being a demon is not a bad thing. Without death, there cannot be new life. New life is not possible if there is no room for new life to thrive.”
“Can you explain more about spirits as a whole? How do humans not know much about them? Have I met a spirit other than you?”
“Spirits aren’t much different from humans. We have feelings and have jobs. We goof off and have fun. We build relationships and grow as people. A long time ago, spirits and humans used to live side by side, but one day the humans turned on us and the spirits put up a border. It’s invisible to see and humans live on one side and spirits live on the other. Animals and plants however live on both at the same time just as I can. I’m a special spirit with special talents, so I am able to live on both or cross over to exclusively live in one or the other.”
“If humans and spirits don’t have good relationships with each other, why do you work on the human side of the border?”
“Well, we couldn’t just abandon them completely. They still needed us; without us their world would not exist. For a long time, we lived in silence and continued to make the world work for the humans, but we allowed the humans to suffer by not aiding in birth or death. We took their access to nature spirits away, which caused them to suffer from great disease and mass death.
About 10,000 years ago, the humans reached out to us and pleaded for our forgiveness and apologized for their ancestors' mistakes. The guardians decided it would be okay to forgive the humans and aid them again, but that we should still be wary of the humans.
The prince opened up the border so that other princes and guardians alone could cross over and live in both realms at our will. We can also take other spirits between this border as well when it is needed, and some spirits are allowed to live exclusively in the human realm. There is a lot of information about this and I don’t want to confuse you too much.”
“If the humans and spirits can’t see each other how do they not constantly bump into each other and their buildings?”
“The guardians worked with the prince and made it to where if you were on one side of the border you were permeable for the things on the other side. Meaning if you were in the spirit realm right now, you would not be able to see the house of questioning and would be able to walk through all of its contents.
Since I sometimes reside on both sides, my house remains in both realms so that my privacy is not invaded by either humans or spirits and I don't accidentally invade someone else's privacy if they were to unknowingly travel through it. It’s just more convenient to have my house on both sides. It can be confusing to understand this, but you will understand in time.
Due to the fact that I sometimes live in both realms, I can pick and choose what I can pass through as long as they only live on one side. I cannot walk through trees or animals, but I can walk through buildings made on either side at my will. I’m also able to choose if I want to see exclusively things that reside in the human realms or things that exclusively live in the spirit realm. I can also choose to see both at the same time. I can also choose the transparency at which I see one or the other.”
