Ash

Ash

Oct 13, 2019

There is a tale of an island, far from here, that has been covered completely in ash. No one has the slightest idea why this came to be, nor knew anyone from there as if it was always ash.

That would be the case if a certain captain on a certain ship didn't recently receive a distress signal coming from a place that was on that mysterious island, which would signify that something was there and intelligent enough to seek outside help.

This captain, who obviously had nothing better to do than to explore what could be the most dangerous thing anyone has ever faced, went full steam ahead.

The journey there seemed to highlight the overall mystical feel of the island, for the closer they got, the sea began to change.

What was once a calm place where fish swam to and fro, not a care in the world, there now seemed to be an almost foreboding atmosphere surrounding the waves.

The only thing visible in the waters we're sickly seaweed, floating by, disconnected from the sand that gave them nutrients and support from harsh storms and predators.

The captain was perturbed by this, but still, they tread onward. The belief that the light of this dark tunnel will be the moment they hit that ashy sand gave them the focus and fight they needed to power through.

After a few more miles of the lifeless sea surrounding them, they finally reached the fabled island of ash. Their excitement was through the roof! They were what seemed to be the first person here, a place ripe for exploration.

Once they stepped foot on glorious ash, they immediately felt something was strange about this place, and it wasn't the fact that everything was covered by ash. In fact, they didn't think the ash was covering anything at all!

There were trees and rocks littered about, sure, but they just didn't look right. For one, they couldn't find anywhere where the tree could be hiding under all the ash, it was like the ash formed itself into a perfect rendition of a tree!

Their observation was awarded, as they touched the first tree they could, the entire thing fell down like a dry sandcastle, confirming that it was, in fact, entirely ash!

The captain was perplexed, but nevertheless, ventured onward. Finding the maker of the distress signal was the sole reason they came here, and they'll be darned if they didn't finish what they started!

No matter how far they walked, their hypothesis came to become more and true. Each and every inch of the island was completely and utterly ash! They wondered how anyone could live here, much less make a functioning signal their ship could pick up.

Their answer was suddenly and abruptly answered, however, for they were now looking straight at a figure that strongly resembled a human, who also seemed interested in him.

The captain gradually came closer to the figure, intrigued to the max. How is it possible that life was created here? And what even were they? They're definitely not human, that's for sure.

The figure, on closer inspection, seemed to answer that very question. It was a being made entirely out of ash! It looked like a complete replica of a human, and the captain swore that they even replicated their own form, captain's hat and all.

The captain found this greatly amusing and did many poses to watch the ash-entity do the same ones with precision unlike they have ever seen, piquing their curiosity even more.

This went on for quite some time until the captain realized that this was dragging on for much too long, so they asked the ash person where the signal their ship picked up on originated from.

Miraculously, they understood the captain and took them straight to a small ash radio contraption, another completely replicated construction of any other radio you'd find in a store. They had no doubt that it would even have small gears and circuits rolling around inside.

The captain was utterly fascinated by all this, and the ash person was entirely fascinated with the captain as well, they seemed like they could study each other for eons if they could.

So the captain made a decision, they would spend their life on this ash island with their newfound friend, and discuss the wonders of the ash island and beyond with one another.

The ash entity agreed wholeheartedly, and they stayed on that island ever since. Some say that if you travel the sea long enough, you'll be bound to find the ash island. And if you do find it, you'll be sure to catch a glimpse of the captain and the ash person waving at you. Be sure to wave back, who knows, they might share you some interesting tidbits!

I originally wanted to do something similar to Pompeii, but I liked how this story turned out!
