I ran to the nurse’s. When she saw me, she scowled.
“Seriously, Keith?” she complained.
“Not my fault,” I groaned.
“Really? It seems you pissed someone off again,” she commented.
“I didn’t do anything, Silena. They were calling me things and I told them facts,” I shrugged.
“What kind of stuff did you say this time?” she asked.
“This one girl asked me out and this kid was mad about it,” I shrugged. “I just told him she wasn’t my type.”
“Because your type is guys?” she joked. “Especially those that are fit, strong, and buff,” Silena laughed.
“Silena! Shh,” I exclaimed. “Don’t say that so loudly!”
“Why? Everyone already knows you like guys,” she shrugged.
“No… Aspen clearly didn’t. Anyway, what do I do?” I asked.
“W- Ohh. About the bloodied nose…” Silena realized. She probed at my jaw gently. I winced. She pulled out tissue and dabbed at my nose gently. I winced harder. It hurt a lot. Like, blinding, throbbing pain. “Be glad that kid didn’t land a real punch. You wouldn’t have been able to walk away if he had. Kid, you need to be careful.”
“I don’t do anything on purpose,” I mumbled.
“I know, but just ignore them,” Silena stated.
“It’s kind of hard if they’re in my face,” I retorted.
“I know, kid, but it won’t help if you’re responding to their insults,” she commented with a frown.
“Silena… I’m gonna miss you,” I muttered after a pause.
“Why?” she asked.
“I’m going to some kind of boarding school or something,” I replied.
“What?” she exclaimed.
“Didn’t Charlie tell you?” I asked.
“No… Just because I’m his sister doesn’t mean that he tells me everything that happens. Especially with his best friend.”
“Well, I thought you guys were close,” I countered.
“No… he’s been drifting away lately,” Silena commented quietly.
“Oh, so it’s not just me who noticed,” I mumbled.
Silena looked at me strangely, but didn’t say anything.
“I hope you have fun,” she stated.
“Not likely, but thanks,” I replied. “I bet they won’t have nurse as good as you are,” I added with a smirk.
She smiled softly.
“Don’t you think they might be better if they’re working at a boarding school?” Silena inquired.
“Maybe…” I agreed with a sheepish smile.
“I hope you don’t get your ass beat over there are much as you do here,” she commented. “Sit down.”
She fixed my sitting position and told me to hold my nose closed. Silena looked through the cabinets and after a moment brought out a little container of pills and gave me one to swallow.
“The only reason I get beat up so often is because I choose not to fight back,” I mumbled.
“I know.”
I looked up at her, surprised. She handed me some kind of cold compressor, which I took and held to my nose.
“What?!” I exclaimed.
“You can’t think I’m that stupid, can you? It’s obvious to me that you still try to stay in shape,” she said. I got quiet. “You should either fight back or keep your mouth shut.”
“I know,” I sighed. “It’s just hard to do that. I get irritated, but I know that I could really hurt them,” I admitted.
Silena sighed and smiled at me. My nosebleed was gone, but the pain was still immense.
“I really do hope that the school you’re going to is a better environment for you. I’ve met your mother before and I know it will be good for you to leave for a bit,” she told me. When I didn’t say anything, she squeezed my shoulder gently. “You’ll be fine.”
“Alright, thanks,” I muttered. “Bye!”
She gave me a tight hug and we parted ways. I hurried back to school, where the teacher glared at me.
