I woke up to a strange man shaking my awake. Who was he, and what was he doing in here? In fact, where was I? I couldn’t remember anything! Who was I?
“Felix, breakfast is almost ready.” The man said to me as he left the room.
He was familiar, but I didn’t know how. He was pretty nice to look at. His reddish brown hair framed his masculine face perfectly, making him look like a god. I got out of bed, but I didn’t know what to do. Where do I go? I sat on the edge of the bed trying to figure out what to do. I was lost inside and out.
I don’t know how long I sat there, but the strange man came back in. “What are you waiting for?”
“Who are you?” I asked him.
He gave me a shocked look, “I’m Max. Did you lose your memory again?”
“What do you mean ‘again’?” I slightly cocked my head at him. He seemed to know who I was, but that didn't mean I could trust him. He could've been a kidnapper and was trying to trick me into trusting him.
He let out a really long sigh, “Something really bad happened to you, and you’re the only one with the answers. However, when I first met you, you couldn’t remember your past. Yesterday, you took a nap and forgot everything that happened that day. Now you wake up and can’t remember me. Do you remember anything?”
“I’m not supposed to remember anything.” I announced. That was the only thing I could remember. I didn't know why, but it was very important that I didn’t remember my past.
“Why not?” He asked me.
“I don’t know. I’m just not supposed to. That’s all I can remember.”
“Well, like I said before I’m Max. I’m your roommate and therapist. Yesterday, I discovered that you are a spirit, and I explained spirits to you. Would you like me to explain them to you again?”
“No, I’m not supposed to remember my past that could trigger a memory, and I can’t let that happen.” I argued with him. I wasn't sure why I wasn't supposed to remember, but it was all I knew, so it had to be important. Or at least that's what I thought at the moment.
“You need to remember, so we can solve your case.” After saying that to me, he started explaining how I was found, and why I was in his care.
“You were taking defense classes, so you could start walking around on your own. Are you still wanting to do that?” he asked me.
“I don’t know.” I replied to him. It was all just so confusing, and I didn’t know what to do.
Max seemed to be hurt that I couldn’t remember him. Was he someone important to me? I didn’t feel out of place being around him, and he was very good looking. Maybe we were dating.
After our conversation, he walked me to the kitchen and pulled out a chair for me. I sat down in it, and he brought me a plate. We must have been dating before I lost my memory. I debated on asking him, but I didn’t want to be wrong or offend him. I didn’t want to hurt him in case he was someone important to me. Maybe he just wanted me to refall in love with him.
I ate the food he placed in front of me and enjoyed the silence we shared. Then my curiosity got the best of me, “Were we dating?”
“No, but we could be if you want.”
“So we didn’t have anything before I lost my memory?” I tried to confirm once more.
“No. Just a friendship.”
“Then why are you treating me like this?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well you treat me like a partner. Do you have feelings for me?”
“It’s just a habit for me to treat you like this. You were pretty helpless when I first met you. If I told you I have feelings for you, would you date me?” He blushed at me.
“I don’t know. I don’t know who you are anymore.” I felt sad. This man obviously had feelings for me and was probably working on getting me to date him. It also seemed that he was a bit insecure of himself. As if he was shy about potentially dating me.
“It’s okay. I have an idea to try and fix your memory.” He said to me.
“How?”
“With a friend. He won’t be able to fix it, but he’ll be able to tell me how to fix it.”
“But I shouldn’t remember my past. I don’t know why, but it’s important that I don't remember it.”
“Well, it’s important that you remember now. We need you to remember, so your case can be solved, and you can live like a normal person again.”
“I’m not sure remembering is what I should be doing, but if you think it is important that I remember, I guess it wouldn’t hurt for me to remember.” I shrugged my shoulders trying to reason with myself. I couldn’t remember why I shouldn’t remember, so to me, there was no true reason for me not to remember. I wanted to know what happened, as well as, why I felt it was important not to know.
“Do you mind if I test your memory? It’s odd. You seem to remember knowledge based things, but not personal things.” By this point we were done eating our breakfast.
“I’m not sure how you plan to test that, but if it will help you, go for it.”
“Okay, one plus one?” He questioned me.
I thought it was a stupid question, so I gave a stupid answer, “eleven, duh.”
He gave me a shocked look, “How’d you get that?”
“Well if you put a one and a one together, you get eleven, which is two ones.”
“Are you answering seriously or are you joking?”
I sighed, “The answer is two.”
He laughed at me, “I taught you that. You know?”
“Taught me what? To add?
“No, the eleven thing. What’s two plus two?”
“Fish.” I answered sarcastically.
“Okay, three plus three?”
“Eight, duh.” I rolled my eyes at him.
"What about seven plus seven?"
"Triangle!"
“You’re pretty smart. I remember when I first introduced you to those concepts. You thought I was crazy. Okay, different type of question; what is the metal box on wheels in my front yard?”
“How am I supposed to know that. I can’t see it.” I stuck my tongue out at him childishly.
He got out of his chair and undid the blinds of the window in the living room. “Alright, smartass. What’s that?”
I got up and went to the window. I already knew he was talking about a car, but I wanted to amuse him. “Oh, that. That’s a metal death trap that takes you places you don’t want to go.”
“That’s very specific. I guess you can remember the feelings you got when I drove you around before you lost your memory again.”
“I don’t remember ever being in one.”
“That’s okay. You’ll get to be in it again, but it was never your favorite thing to do.”
“Why not?” I asked him.
“You’ll find out soon enough.”
Max closed the window blinds and went to sit on the couch. He patted the seat beside him, and I took it as an invitation to sit beside him. I sat beside him, and he turned his t.v. on. It was almost as if he knew that I was getting worn out by our conversation. My mind was jumbled with all of this information, and I didn’t know what to do with it. He turned the t.v. onto a nature documentary about snakes.
We sat there and watched this movie, and as I grew slightly tired, I decided to lay on Max. Although I didn’t know him very well since I had lost my memory, I felt a tremendous amount of trust and comfort towards him.
We finished the movie, and Max got up and stretched. I hated that he got up because I had gotten really cozy laying on his lap. He walked out of the room and came back with a small weight.
He handed it to me, “I know you don’t remember, but before you lost your memory again, you wanted to be able to walk by yourself. In order for you to walk by yourself, you needed to learn some defense. I enrolled you into classes, and your teacher wants you to curl with this twice a day. You were supposed to go to class today, but I’m going to contact the teacher and tell him you’re not feeling well.”
I didn't have a reason to doubt him, so I took the weight from him, and began to curl with my right arm. Since he knew a little bit about me, he was the only person I could turn to about myself. Plus, there was no reason for me to distrust him.
Throughout the rest of the day, not much was said between us. We watched more shows and movies about animals, and he even cooked lunch. After lunch, we went back to watching movies or shows. He then cooked dinner. He was an amazing cook; it was like eating little pieces of heaven! Once, we were done eating, he showed me where I could find my clothes and where I could shower.
I took a quick shower and got dressed and slowly processed my day. It had been an interesting day, but I couldn’t help but feel a little bad. I wondered how Max felt about me losing my memory: I forgot who he was. I’m sure that hurt, especially considering that we might have been close to beginning a relationship.
I got into the bed I had gotten out of that morning and decided that I'd ask Max out the next day. I was slowly drifting into sleep, when Max came into the room and took a shower in the bathroom connected to the bedroom. When he was done, he got into the bed with me.
“We sleep together?” I asked him curiously.
“Yes, it’s a safety thing.”
“How so?”
“I know you can’t remember our conversation about spirits yesterday, so I’ll just reexplain my house to you. I’m known as a guardian. We have the ability to move in between the human realm and the spirit realm as well as stay somewhere in between.
Anyway, my house is somewhere in between. This means that both humans and spirits can come into my house at any time, knowing that it’s here. It also keeps people from accidentally walking through my house not knowing it’s here, so that means nobody’s privacy is invaded. I don’t know what happened to you or who was after you, but you were almost killed by someone.
While you’re in my house, you can be attacked by both humans and spirits. Due to this, I sleep with you, so that if someone tries to attack you, I can throw you into one realm or the other so that you can’t be hurt by someone if they come after you.”
“That’s a lot to process.” I said to him. It was confusing to think about what he told me. It was also hard to believe that I had almost been killed. I didn’t even remember something like that happening to me at all.
“I know. It can be a lot to take in, but you’re stuck with me for a while, so ask all the questions you want. I’ll just keep slowly explaining things to you as they come up.”
“Thanks.”
I drifted off to sleep after Max explained my potential danger to me. I wondered who was after me and why they tried to kill me. I woke up the next morning to Max, calling my name.
“Breakfast is almost ready.” He announced to me as I opened my eyes.
I got out of bed and changed out of my pajamas. I made my way out of the bedroom and went into the kitchen. I sat down on the same chair that I had sat in the day before. I looked around the house, taking a mental note of everything around me. The house smelled amazing, and I was excited to eat some more of Max’s amazing cooking.
