Character Page - The Stranger

First encountered in the Hollow Village.
Largely silent and withdrawn, the Stranger is sparing with his words, having grown accustomed to going unseen by the vast majority. Very few can see his face and recognise what he is - in some respects this is for the best, as they would kill him if they knew. That hostility has become inherent since the Denouncement and to most, would be beyond their control.
Formerly known as the Priest, the Stranger witnessed the lead-up to the Denouncement from within holy orders, seeing the corruption of his brothers and sisters and the world they had allowed to crumble. Managing to survive the years between the Denouncement and Folly, the Stranger is perhaps one of the very few priests left.
As a character, he has never given up on the people, or blamed them for what they have done. Instead he empathises, and though he doesn't know what he is meant to do now, their salvation is still his utmost concern. Disheartening though it is, he still manages to drag himself onward. The answer may come in the silence one day.
It is not optimism that drives him, but a resigned compassion (and need to also free himself of course). God may still be alive somewhere.
He is a Sin Eater. He does not know if it is punishment or gift, but he began doing it actively in the Lord's manor - but after the Denoucnement, all began to taste of ash as the world corrupted, and now he eats little for the weight of the corruption he would consume.
He is able to clearly see when people become hollow and beyond reach, and could see the things slipping into the world when it died - that has clouded somewhat, but the sense remains
He became inexplicably linked to the Hunter after he was shot and awoke into his First Death. Neither know how or why, but both have seen the Weavers.
Each time the Hunter's Other Self dies, the Stranger also feels it, and learns more of the Hunter's sin - there is a growing resentment towards him because of this.

Ahh this is so interesting!! The priests were involved in the world's decay, so they are somehow being held responsible. I like how you described his sense of duty and compassion as what drives him on. It sounds like the Hunter is lucky to have him share his load, so to speak, even if he may not know it yet.
