“Azaki, don’t say such things.” The doctor sighed and placed his hand atop Azaki’s with a small grin. “I know that you don’t mean it.”
A few tears fell from his lilac eyes and Azaki pouted. “Yeah, you’re probably right, I don’t mean it. Don’t even really know why I said it.”
“Your hormones are going crazy after nearly dropping and being exposed to such intense pheromones, you’ll probably level out in a few days, but you will have to properly take your medicine. Ok?”
“Fine.” The man replied while allowing his tense muscles to relax into his pillow. Maybe the doctor was right and there really was no fighting fate, regardless of how much he hated it.
“Everything is going to be alright, Azaki, I just need you to trust me and take care of yourself properly this time.”
“So you’re really saying there’s no hope?” Azaki questioned with a quiet sniffle. He wasn’t sure if his body could produce any more tears at this point.
“Well, that depends on you.” The man sighed and rubbed Azaki’s arm softly. “Look, son, you are an omega. It is simply who you are. Even though you weren’t releasing pheromones properly, you’ve always produced them. There was never any escaping the reality of what you are, but that doesn’t mean that there is no hope.”
A long silence stretched between them while Azaki frowned at the words as if he couldn’t believe them. The doctor continued, growing a bit more stern. “I’ve long had a theory that you actually haven’t been releasing pheromones at all.”
Azaki raised an eyebrow at this, unsure how to respond to such a strange statement. He had been releasing small amounts of pheromones, they’d literally been testing for it every six months since he was sixteen. “What do you mean?”
“Well, I have a theory that since you’re producing pheromones at a normal rate and not releasing any that they’re...just ...leaking out? As-As opposed to being released in a more traditional sense.” The man punctuated his sentence like a question, almost as if he was trying the words out for himself. Azaki huffed.
“And? What does that theory change?”
“It changes everything.” His voice became more stern, the concern practically palpable in the room.
“But...how?”
“Well, I’m not sure. But let's say I’m right. You’re body isn’t releasing pheromones as much as it’s leaking them. If your numbers are starting to increase, it’s safe to assume that it’s because you’re packed to the brim with unreleased pheromones.”
“Okay.”
“And if they were to ever release by mistake…” The doctor shuddered, “You’re like a walking time-bomb.”
“Of pheromones.” Azaki stated, not truly understanding the issue. But, how could he, he’d never felt pheromones in his life. The boy had no understanding for how powerful and intense they could be to anyone in regular doses, let alone if ten years of unreleased pheromones were to release at once.
“Yes.” The doctor sighed, “You know those stories of Prime Omegas releasing pheromones into crowds of Alphas and causing riots?”
“Yeah.”
“You’d put them to shame.” The man didn’t grin, or smile, or do anything to indicate that he was making a joke. He simply stared at Azaki for a couple of minutes before drastically changing the subject to talk more about his mental state. “Well, anyway, it’s just a theory. We should be worrying ourselves with the things that are more palpable. So, let’s talk about these pent up feelings you’ve not been telling me about all this time.”
As they conversed, Azaki finally started to properly relax. He’d never considered how much stress he’d been holding onto from lying about how he felt about his situation until now. As he spoke, the waves of relief washed over him like great weights were falling off his body and releasing him of a burden.
He couldn’t believe the calmness and sense of release he was feeling as he finally got it all out; The doctor sat quietly for the most part and just let him talk out his feelings. Not only about his distaste for his gender, but his fears to present, his stress at trying to find a job, his worries for the social climate in the city for omegas, everything. When he finished, the doctor provided some kind and unobtrusive advice. Just little comments here and there that were aimed at keeping Azaki hopeful and positive about his future.
“It’s just… I’ve worked so hard between school and competition. I-I never considered what I’d do if I had to actually hunt for jobs with an omega gender.” The boy paused and when he continued his voice was quiet and squeaky, defeated, upset. “Who would want an omega as their head of security?”
At those words, the doctor seemed to perk up in his seat and pull out his phone. Azaki assumed he has some important doctor business to attend to and let him be until he spoke again.
“Sorry, I have a quick meeting with one of the Prime Alphas who helped us out with you. I’ll stop by again later, maybe with a present?” His cheery persona neatly back in place, the doctor left the room as if he hadn’t just gotten Azaki all emotionally vulnerable.
‘What a dick,’ Azaki thought with an affectionate smile before allowing himself to sink into the comfort of his pillows and drift off to sleep.
