Kile found himself back in the bedroom he has been staying in since he arrived. (What happen? How long had I been out?) He changes into the close waiting for him. He made is way downstairs. Steve sat on the kitchen table.
“Hey Kid. ” He stands to up to get a bowl of chicken soup for him. “You gave me a big scare. I thought you were a goner for moment. Seem like you just caught a bug.” He sits another glass of cider in front of him. “I made it fresh this morning and chilled it for you.”
“Thanks.” The cider was a welcome treat to his dry parched throat. The soup was hearty and delicious. “Steve, you can sure make my stomach happy.”
“Well thanks. Those are nice words to hear.” He sits back to take a good look at him. “Maybe we should have you checked out? You're still a little pale and your eyes are weak.”
“No, I’m fine really?” He gave a rueful smile. “Sorry to put you through all this trouble. You can put me to work. I’m ready to go.”
“I can handle this here just fine. I brought you here to help to rest from the sun and help you take a break you looked liked you could use it. You could say it was Steve to the rescue.”
Kile laughs “Did I look that bad?”
“Not bad. Just in need of help.” He takes a sip from his own glass. “You said you had a friend I tried searching for him while you were out. I couldn’t find anyone. I have some friends who are keeping an eye out for him. They will bring him by if he pops up.”
“Thanks.” He slowly move the food around in his bowl. “I’m not sure. I will be seeing him again.” (I might not be seeing anyone again. Maybe this place is my resting stop before the bottom falls out.)
“Don’t give up Kile. You’re not done yet.”
The young man's eyes widen. (I don’t think I ever said my name, and I don’t think he called me before.) He jerks his head up. “Steve?”
“You will be fine Kid. You need to learn to have a little faith. I don’t promise that your life will end up perfect, but I can promise that giving up is never the answer.” He stood up to clear the table. “Take your coat before you go out. It’s chilly outside. Wait for me and I bring the horses for a ride.”
He grabs the coat. (Wait the road he found me on had autumn trees but the day was so hot. I didn’t think I could make it . How did it turn so cold so fast and the coat. ) “How long was I out?”
“You were out a couple of days.”
(That’s what it felt like. Then why is it so cold.) Kile throws on the coat and walks out the door. (What’s going on. Something is not right. This world is never right, but something is off.)
“Hey Kid?” Steve walks up with one horse. “The boss sent word for me to run an errand. You will have to go it alone.”
“I can stay and help-” Steve raise a hand to cut him off.
“Go and ride free. There is a great meadow pass here you will find yourself in the most beautiful place.”
Kile mounts the horse okay. “Will you come later?”
“We’ll see. Enjoy the ride Kile, that’s what life is all about.” He slaps the bottom of the horse before the young man could say a word.
The horse runs fast and free. Kile felt the wind past him. (Finally, freedom in took in the cool are as he rode.)
“Welcome back Kile you seem more yourself again.”
He looks to his left to see Doodle Jared by his side. The side of his lips turn up showing a friendly smile allowing some of his teeth as his eyes dance with happiness. “Jared where have you been?”
While the eyes could not be seen that smile transcended the inner planes to the outer world. Jared smiles looking down at him. “I’m happy to see you too.”
