Roman ~ June 12, Tuesday
"Alright, I think that's everything," Kane said as he set down the box he was carrying. "Are you sure you don't want us to help you unpack everything?"
I wiped my forehead with the back of my arm and shook my head. "No, no, you've done enough. It's getting late; I'll unpack some tonight and do the rest tomorrow. Besides," I clapped my hand on Owen's shoulder, making him jump slightly. "I have Owen here to help me."
Kane grinned and tilted his head as he folded his arms. "You just don't want me throwing your stuff away." He accused.
I grinned back at him and tried to hold back the bubbles of laughter building in my throat. "What?" I attempted to fiend ignorance. "No, that's not the reason." I shook my head and tried to school my face, but it wasn't working. We both cracked up at the same time.
Derik shook his head at us, but he was chuckling. Poor Owen just looked lost.
"Thank you for all of your help, guys," I said as I gave both of them a quick hug. "You too, Ben." I waved the burly man over and shook his hand. He just nodded his head.
"Don't hesitate to call me if you need anything," Derik said as I walked everyone to the door and shook a few more hands.
"I will," I called with one last wave goodbye before closing the door with a sigh. Turning around, I leaned back against the door, "my bed is calling to me." I told Owen.
He furrowed his brow, "I don't think it can do that." He mumbled.
I chuckled as I pushed off the door and walked into the kitchen. "What do you want to eat?" I called as I shuffled a few boxes out of the way.
"Anything is fine."
I put my hands on my hips as I glanced around. "Pizza it is," I said as I pulled my phone out of my pocket. I ordered us a large meat lovers pizza and plopped down on the couch.
Owen slowly made his way over and awkwardly sat down on the edge of the couch as far away as possible.
"Thank you for the help," I said, trying to relive the awkward silence.
Owen folded his hands in his lap and nodded his head. "Your welcome."
While waiting for our pizza to arrive, I decided to set up the TV. I didn't have a dish or internet yet, so DVD's were all we could watch. I set everything up temporarily and put in Real Steel. Going back to sit on the couch, I realized I didn't have the remote. As the previews started playing, I looked around for it.
"What are you looking for?" Owen asked.
"The TV remote," I said as I opened a box of living room stuff. I rummaged around for a minute before giving up going to the next box.
I heard that familiar voice announce on the TV, "This movie is enhanced with Disney's FastPlay!" I immediately dropped everything and dove for the DVD player. "Quick push play!"
"What?! How?!" Owen jumped up from the couch, looking panicked.
I just barely managed to push the play button before the screen changed, and I sighed in relief. "Never mind, I got it. It's fine."
Giving up on finding the remote right now, I got up, and I went back to sit on the couch again. Owen slowly sat back down, as well. He still looked a little on edge and confused, though.
By the time our pizza had arrived, the movie was ready to push play. I set the food on the coffee table and went to find us some glasses for drinks. I filled them with ice and coke then hauled paper plates, napkins, and our drinks back into the living room. Once everything was set up, I placed Owen's plate and drink in front of him and jumped up to push play.
As the movie started, I got settled with my food in hand and dug in. Owen seemed to really enjoy the pizza, so I made a mental note to have it again in the near future. Though I would probably be making it myself to save on money and plus it would be healthier that way. I watched him from the corner of my eye as he picked up his drink and brought it to his nose to smell it. I watched his brow furrow as he started at the bubbly brown liquid.
"It's good, I promise." I encouraged.
He glanced at me before taking a sip. His face immediately scrunched up. "Why does it... taste like that?" He questioned, probably referring to the carbonation.
I tried to hold back my laughter, but I ended up snorting any way. "It's soda. It has carbonation in it that makes it bubble." I explained.
"Well, I don't like it." Owen declared as he set the glass back on the coffee table.
I chuckled and set my plate down to go get him something else. "Hold on, I'll get you some water instead." I got him a fresh glass of ice water and handed it to him. "Here, try this." Taking the glass, he took a sip and nodded in satisfaction.
"Much better."
Sitting back down, we focused on the movie.
We were nearly halfway through the movie, and we had eaten all of the pizza. I wanted popcorn. "Owen, do you want some popcorn?" I asked without taking my eyes off the movie. Silence. "Owen?" I turned to him. He was focused entirely on the screen. Grinning, I called him again, a little louder this time. "Owen!"
He blinked and hummed, "hmm?" Slowly he peeled his eyes away to look at me. "What?"
"Do you want some popcorn?" I asked again.
"Popcorn?" I nodded. "S-sure."
"Don't worry, I'm sure you'll like it. It's good."
"You said that about the soda, too." He mumbled as he returned his attention to the TV.
I laughed as I went to paused the movie. Pushing the stop button, I was immediately met with protest.
"No! What did you do!" Owen whined.
"Chill out, I just paused it so I can go make some popcorn."
Owen stared at me a second. "Oh... Then hurry up!" He said while waving his hands urgently.
"Alright, alright, I'm going!" I hurried to the kitchen and rummaged through my boxes of dried goods till I found what I was looking for. Poping it in the microwave, I hit start and leaned back against the counter to wait.
"Is it done yet?"
"No," I chuckled. "Almost."
Noted, Owen is impatient.
I poured the popcorn into a bowl and returned to the living room. I hit play and sat back down. I threw a few pieces of the buttery food in my mouth before offering some to Owen. I had to nudge him with the bowl to get him to notice, though. He glanced the bowl before grabbing a piece to try. He crewed on it silently before reaching for another... and another and another. Before long, he had moved down the couch so he could reach the bowl easier.
I shook my head at him and smiled. I was learning something new about him every day.
