What a beautiful melody that the song of bird is. What better feeling than waking up to the sound of the waves. Ashil opened his eyes slowly, the sunlight dazzling him. A hand across his face, he rose heavily from the fine sand. When did he come back to this beach? It had been two years since he had returned, what was he doing here?
Getting used to the sunlight, he began to rub his clothes covered by the sand. He looked around. Nothing had changed. It's as if he had just left this place. As if today was yesterday. He sighed nostalgically, getting closer to the water. Why was he here? Why did he need to be on this beach?
Ashil didn't remember anything. He didn't remember where he came from. He didn't even know if this picture was real or not. He was simply lost. Still, he felt at home. Whether in the depths of dreams or in the realization of reality, he didn't feel imprisoned. He didn't feel free either, but he knew he was somewhere where he could feel comfortable.
Staring at the waves going back and forth, he wondered whom of this beach or him had changed the most. They watched each other transform, evolve. His childlike gaze no longer remembered its former size or the pace it took every day of the year, but his childhood memories were always reminiscent of its colors and smells. In many years, it will be his eyes as adults that will not be able to remember how it was, but the memories will always be there.
Suddenly, Ashil was shaken violently, the picture in front of him was troubled before disappearing behind another one brighter and clearer. Slowly and painfully, Ashil opened his eyes, leaving the picture of the blue sky that extended beyond his vision through the curtainless window of his bedroom disappearing into the darkness of his mind. His little paradise continues to rest in his world of dreams.
"Finally you're awake!" Byeolhae said, exasperated. "It's been over five minutes since we tried to wake you up with Jaeyeon."
"Maybe you should have let me sleep," Ashil replied sleepily and tiredly.
Byeolhae sighed and walked a little from away Ashil.
"The freshmen will come soon, take this," she said by blindly offering him badges to put around the neck, "and go and wait for them at the main entrance of the university."
Ashil rolled his eyes while taking the necklaces abruptly. He got up from his chair nonchalantly and left the stand of his study section.
He arrived a few minutes later in front of the university's main entrance. The latter was quiet and there were only seniors of each campus who waited patiently for the opening time of the gate. Ashil went to stand next to the psychology section sign. He took out his cell phone and waited patiently too.
His eyes staring at his phone, his view ended up getting blurred, losing himself in the contemplation of his screen. Thinking back on his dream, Ashil wondered why he had such a dream. Why had he dreamed of home? Why after two years, did he dream of this beach? Why did it come to disturb him suddenly?
This dream, this picture of the beach stuck in his mind made him nostalgic. He would give everything to go back. May it be even for a second.
The gate finally opened and the first students rushed into the atmosphere of student life. As soon as all the new psychology students were gathered around Ashil, he gave them their name tag by calling them. Once empty-handed, he asked them to follow him. Back at the stand, Byeolhae took responsability for the freshmen. Relieved, Ashil went back to his chair. Taking a notebook on the table, he opened it and went through it without really worrying about what had been written in it.
His gaze lost in the distance, a hand crossed his field of vision, waving a bottle of water before his eyes. Ashil took the object and thanked the person, who sat beside him.
"Who had the idea to participate in the ceremony?" The person asked him.
"Byeolhae."
"Why did we accept?"
"Because we are her friends. Her best friends," Ashil clarified.
"But still?"
"For the activity at the end of the afternoon."
"Ah, yes the activity at the end of the afternoon," the person repeated thoughtfully.
"Jae?" Ashil called and turned toward his friend.
"Hmm?"
"Don't make me take you home."
"I'm sorry, but I can't promise you anything," Jae said half-sorry.
Ashil mimicked the indignation before watering Jae with water. Surprised, Jae stood abruptly and dismayed from the chair.
"You! You! Run and fast!" He loudly threatened Ashil while wiping his face with his T-shirt.
Ashil didn't need to be told twice that he was already running away from Jae, the bottle still in his hand.
The chase took place throughout the university. Wet from head to toe, they slipped between groups of students, trying not to spill water on them. Sometimes, at the sight of these two happy boys having fun, the freshmen asked their seniors if they could do the same, receiving a categorical refusal. But that didn't take away the smile they had on their lips or the excitement of being part of a prestigious school!
Returning tired at the stand, Byeolhae was waiting for them with a serious look and her arms crossed.
"Oops, we're going to be scolded by mom," Jae said jokingly.
Ashil held back his laugther and they finally arrived in front of their friend.
"Can I know what you've done?" Byeolhae asked them, horrified, looking up and down at them.
"Ashil fell in the toilet and I had to save him."
"Jaeyeon!" Byeolhae said, offended, hitting his head with a rolled up flyer.
Ashil looked up and made the mistake of crossing Jaeyeon's eyes. It was no longer possible for him to hold back his laughter, he burst out laughing. Jaeyeon followed him, leaving a Byeolhae overwhelmed by the situation.
"You know what? I don't want to know anything. Just...," she sighed heavily trying to keep herself calm, "go help the others to prepare the room for tonight while someone in the Master walks around the university with the freshmen."
"Yes, Ma'am!" Ashil and Jaeyeon said in unison and in a military way.
The night had quickly fallen on Seoul, enveloping everyone in the freshness of a late afternoon of March. Sitting in circle in a small auditorium of the campus of the Human Sciences, seniors and freshmen happily communicated with each other, sometimes letting laughter fill the relaxed atmosphere.
After a demonstration of talent, Ashil returned to the room with his arms full of soju bottles.
"Hinata!" An older student yelled his name, coming towards him. "Can you pick up the pizzas at the entrance of the university?"
"I... uh..." Ashil stammered, looking alternately at his arms and the boy in front of him.
"Oh! excuse me, let me get rid of that!"
The boy took the boxes and went to put them on the small stage at the back of the room. He quickly came back and he handed money to Ashil.
"If there's too much money, tell them it's a gesture of generosity."
Ashil nodded to let the boy know that he understood and left the room.
Finally outside, a light breeze came to welcome him. Ashil looked up at the sky. He frowned slightly, thinking that the night was particularly clear. He could see the stars shine. He could even distinguish the lights of the city.
Shrugging his shoulders, he went on his way without worrying more about the starry night. Arrived at the university gate, he handed the money to the delivery man, thanking him for his patience and said goodbye to him before taking the pizzas in his hands and going back to the campus of the Human Sciences.
Back in the auditorium, he entered triumphantly, shouting happily:
"Pizzas are here!"
Happy shouts and applause greeted him. He placed the food in the center of the circle, which was already occupied by plastic cups, soju bottles and side dishes.
Ashil got up awkwardly and then moved back to Jaeyeon's side. No sooner was he sitting down than someone asked for his help again. Ashil sighed silently and stood up. He walked to his eldest, a forced smile on his lips.
"Can you take care of the final activity?"
"Now?" Ashil asked, outraged.
"Just install it. While you prepare everything, we will explain it to them."
"Okay," Ashil capituled.
"Do you know where the material is?"
Ashil nodded.
"Alright, I put my trust in you."
Ashil nodded again and walked for the umpteenth time towards the exit of the room. Before he pushed the door, Ashil turned around and called out to his eldest:
"Seokjin?"
"Yes?"
"Can you make me a glass of flavored soju and keep a piece of pizza for me?"
"I'm doing this right now!"
"Thank you!"
Ashil rushed into the darkness of the corridor, his mind more serene. Although he had the impression that he was suddenly stuck with all the tasks to be done as if he were being punished, that didn't really bother him. In a way, it allowed him to be away from the group and therefore not having to talk to those young people around whom he didn't feel comfortable. They could even ask him to clean a clean place that he would do it. As long as he didn't have to speak in front of all those pairs of eyes, then any task suited him.
Ashil had never been a likeable person. Rather reserved, he will never come into contact with a person by himself. He even wondered how he managed to survive that day when he was out of his comfort zone. You must believe that the support of his friends gave him wings!
Materials in hand, he quickly returned to the room. With the help of Seokjin, they set up the activity. Seokjin called everyone and explained in detail what would represent the psychology section of the university. Even though the faces of some people were veiled for a few seconds of disappointment, most were rather happy.
The festive atmosphere being in full swing, the catchy music filling the air of the room, the voices and laughter arrived intermittently to Ashil's ears. The latter, sitting on the stage, was staring pointedly at the board of the activity. After a few hours, it was finally filled with pieces of colored paper. Some were small and some as large as a parchment. Although the instruction had been to write any thought, there were sometimes drawings lost in the middle of different handwriting styles.
Ashil came down from the stage and headed for the board. Placed right next to the table where the clothes and the registration paper of each student rested, Ashil made a place for himself in this mess, took a white piece of paper and a black pen, then began to write. He let the pen lead his hand on the paper. He let his mind take control of his body. He let it write his words down. He let it trace the existence of his consciousness. The unspeakable of the unconscious. The forgetfulness of the subconscious. He wrote everything that could cross his mind. He wrote in time the thought of a night. As soon as he had finished writing his letter, he took a red drawing pin and hung it in the middle of the board. In this rainbow of colors, his thought was the only one written on a white piece of paper. It was the point of light in a cacophony of red, green, pink, yellow, blue, purple. It was the difference between the ordinary and the majority.
The day was finally over. The freshmen took home or in their dorm room, there were only a few seniors left. Byeolhae and Jaeyeon had abandoned Ashil, leaving him with Seokjin, who was helping him clean the room.
This last chore finished, Seokjin left the responsibility to Ashil to hang the board in the entrance hall of the main building of the campus of the Human Sciences. Walking slowly through the long corridors plunged into darkness, dimly lit by the light of his cell phone, the board under his arm, Ashil finally arrived in front of the big white wall facing the glass doors of the main building of the campus of the Human Sciences. He placed the board on the wall hook, centered it and then walked away to admire the work of his section.
