“I’m sorry I don’t remember anything.” Porter started, “But can you explain what that shadow monster was?”
Kyte looked down as if he were ashamed. Porter watched him carefully as he fiddled with a piece of paper he held between his hands.
“It’s kind of a long story.” He said, accidently ripping the paper.
“I don’t mind. It doesn’t look like I’ll be getting out of here any time soon.” Porter motioned towards his leg and head which were wrapped in bandages.
Kyte chuckled lightly. He balled up the piece of paper and threw it in the bin across the room with perfect aim. “It was a werewolf.” He stated plainly. He looked at Porter as if he knew he wouldn’t believe him.
He was right. Porter looked at Kyte with disbelief, despite the events that had just happened. “Werewolf? That didn’t look like a wolf.” Porter argued.
“That’s because it was hiding in the shadows.” Kyte explained before continuing, “I just want you to know that normal werewolves don’t look like that. That werewolf was out of control, under some kind of spell. I assume it was one of the witches down town, they’re always up to shady things.”
“You talk of werewolves and witches as if they are normal things. Why?” Porter asked.
“I’ll tell you more about that later. Right now you just need to rest.”
“I have plenty of time to rest… after you tell me everything.” Porter said.
Just as Kyte looked like he was giving in, a young woman walked through the door. Both Porter and Kyte’s shoulders tensed, though Kyte relaxed once he saw her face.
“I thought you were one of the nurses then.” Kyte released a jagged breath.
“Hell no, I’m not the saving lives type. But I would look good as a nurse this Halloween.” The woman pondered that last part as if already planning out her outfit in her head.
“Who are you?” Porter eyed her curiously. He felt a twinge of recognition but couldn’t remember why.
“I’m a little insulted that you don’t recognise me, but then again you don’t even remember him.” She pointed to Kyte as she walked closer to the bed. “I’m Kylie Malley, Kyte’s big sister. I was basically your big sister when you still had your memories.” She smiled brightly despite the current situation.
“So you’re someone else from my past. Can you tell me why he knows about werewolves and witches? He won’t tell me.” Porter tried a different strategy to get the information.
“Kyte!” she slapped her brothers arm. “I told you not to tell him until he has more memories back!” she growled.
“He got attacked by a werewolf, what else was I supposed to tell him.” Kyte rolled his eyes and sighed.
“We’re werewolves, the good kinds though. We turn into dogs not wolves.” Kylie said before turning around to Kyte and mouthing ‘Payback’.
“Your werewolves?” Porter held back a laugh. He was finding it hard to believe but more believable then before. Werewolves were a very valid explanation for what had attacked him, but he couldn’t believe that the two, perfectly human, people standing in front of him were supernatural creatures.
He recalled Carrot, the cute fluffy dingo dog who roamed around his street at night. He looked to Kyte’s hair which was identical to Carrot’s. He silently debated asking them about it.
“You’re Carrot.” Porter accused Kyte after deciding to ask them.
“What? That’s crazy!” Kyte exclaimed, even though a look of embarrassment/ guilt flashed over his face.
“You say that like you know who Carrot is.” Porter continued.
“Hah, you got figured out.” Kylie teased, preventing Kyte from making up a story.
“Fine. I’m Carrot.” Kyte confessed. “It would have looked weird if there was a strange guy hanging out at the front of your house.”
“It also would have been weird if you followed him around the streets late at night.” Kylie replied, heavy sarcasm lacing her voice.
“I’m sorry.” Kyte directed towards Porter. “I couldn’t think of another way to protect you.”
He decided to not ask why he was trying to protect Porter. Instead he asked, “Why is an out of control werewolf after me?”
“That is a complicated question that we can not answer until you have gotten more memories back.” Kylie answered.
Porter was starting to get annoyed. He had just been attacked on the street, found people from his old life, and discovered the existence of werewolves and no one was answering any of his questions.
“Why are you here?” Porter asked the both of them. “You didn’t introduce yourselves to me after I lost my memories so why did you decide to introduce yourselves to me now?” Porter hoped he’d at least get a clear answer from this question.
“You were being targeted by the same werewolf as the one who attacked you when you lost your memories. I thought it would be safer to not remind you of your past or anything associated with the supernatural so that maybe, just maybe, they wouldn’t be able to find you. But I was wrong. They still targeted you and I wasn’t quick enough to stop them. I figured that it’d be safer if we knew each other again after not knowing each other didn't work.”
Strangely, Porter was glad he had reintroduced himself. He was the only connection Porter had to his old life and it made him feel more complete, as if he was a part of him which he had lost during the accident along with his memories.
