Lila stared at the wall blankly. The grief and shame had weighed her down heavily. It hurt. She sucked in a breath when her mother walked out to greet her. With shaky hands, she reached out to her, "Mom... Is Will okay?"
"This is all your fault." Catherine intoned monotonously.
"W-what?"
"I shouldn't have allowed you to do whatever you wanted." She continued on, turning to face away from Lila. "It was my mistake to think you'd be responsible enough."
"Mom, I'm... I'm sorry really!" Lila stood up desperately, "Please, it was an accident!"
"Accident or not, it was your fault."
With a start, Lila woke up. She blinked and looked around. She was just outside the ER. The pristine white walls and floors made her sick.
She breathed in and calmed her racing heart. It had just been a dream. She closed her eyes and let out a breath she didn't know she held, at least she hoped it was. She tightened her hands into fists and swallowed. This whole thing made her nervous. She didn't even want to be in the ER to see her mistake.
She stiffened when Leo walked out. She hoped that he wouldn't blame her. Then she mentally berated herself at that needless worry. They didn't know.
"Lila?"
"Is Will okay?"
"The doctors are still tending to him." Leo flinched, "They're sewing up a lot of deep wounds but so far the worst injury was a broken arm."
Lila let out a shaky breath, "Is he still unconscious?"
"It's for the best." Leo shook his head, "Thankfully he doesn't have a concussion."
"Yeah..." Lila trailed off and looked elsewhere. She instead focused on the vending machine.
"How are Mom and Dad taking this?"
"They're in slight shock." Leo sighed. "Dad didn't really see Kitsune as a real threat until now. Mom... She's worried."
"Did they say anything about Kitsune?"
"Nothing. When we mentioned her name, Dad just looked resigned and Mom just looked off into space." Lila flinched at the descriptions. Leo, however, continued on as if he didn't see her, "I feel like they were reminiscing their old days. You know, when they were fighting Apophis and stuff."
"Yeah... Considering how big of a villain he was... They probably got injured a lot and just realized now that they can't really stop you guys from being injured too." Lila paused and closed her eyes. "It is in the hero business to get hurt a lot. You just have to be more careful and lessen the injuries."
"Yeah..." Leo trailed off and Lila hoped he didn't realize her underlying message. She felt the bench shift and she turned to see Leo beside her. His head was in his hands and she placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, "Lila... I feel like it's all my fault."
"How could it-"
"I should've stopped Will. He just... When he saw Kitsune and Tim, he just ran into it. I should've chased after him. But I did nothing. I just stood there and watched."
"You were in shock..." Lila shook her head. Her brothers weren't at fault. She was. "It's... You didn't expect- what happened anyways."
"Tim had a fist ready. It was as if his powers were all brought into one punch. When Will went to say something, Tim turned and punched him. Will went flying back."
Lila flinched. She was there and it looked painful, "It... It wasn't his fault."
"I feel like it was one of Kitsune's many illusions that made Tim do what he did." Leo scowled, "Once I get my hands on her..."
Lila looked away. His eyes had darkened with rage and hate. It hurt a bit but she knew she deserved it. Before she could say anything else, Leo shook his head and stood up. He smiled apologetically at Lila before he left. She could make out the glistening of tears before he turned and understood his sudden departure.
She let out a sigh and leaned against the back of the metal bench. She hadn't really thought it would end this way with her brothers and her. She closed her eyes and almost let out a bitter laugh. It technically wasn't her though.
Before she could continue with her internal musings, her mother walked out. She stiffened as she realized it looked exactly like her dream. Her hands shook and she tried to calm her racing heart, "Mom?"
"Delilah..." Catherine sighed and sat beside her daughter, "what really happened?"
"I- I was taunting Tim," Lila muttered, flustered. "I taunted him by making copies of not only myself but also Will and Leo. I also insulted him a bit. It got to the point that he had all his powers bunched in one fist and I dropped the illusions, my excitement getting better of me. Then Will approached and Tim punched him."
Catherine pinched the bridge of her nose, it was clear that the fault lied on Tim's impulsiveness.
She looked at Lila and noticed her shaking hands and slightly pale face. She placed a hand on her daughter's shoulder, "Delilah, are you okay?"
"It's my fault, isn't it?" Lila sniffed. "I-It's not Tim's fault. I riled him up and-"
"Delilah it's no one's fault." Catherine shook her head, "You're not at fault because you didn't know William would approach and Timothy would punch him. Timothy hadn't known better because of his rage and impulse. William wasn't aware of what happened other than his brother being in distress. Leonardo wasn't aware that William would race after his brother and Timothy would punch him."
"But-"
"We are all victims of circumstance, Delilah."
"Do you think I should continue? Will's already hurt as he is..."
Catherine paused and chose her words carefully, "It is up to you, Delilah. The moment you chose this path, this way of helping your brothers, was the moment your father and I chose not to meddle with whatever plan you have."
"But... Doesn't dad think my methods are weird and.."
"It's not." Dan intoned as he stood before his daughter. "Delilah, so far, the method you did with your brothers have allowed them to go past their mental barrier and become more than they could ever be more than my methods have. While they are unorthodox, I can't blame you for finding the quickest way for them to unlock their potential."
Lila shook her head, "I just used their impulse to their disadvantage. When one is threatened they will use everything at their disposal."
"Exactly, and you were able to see this immediately." Dan nodded encouragingly at his daughter, "I might not like seeing Will hurt but this woke me up to reality. They're heroes now. They'll get hurt sooner or later, whether I like it or not."
"This could technically be practice." Catherine joked. "We had always ended up hurt after a major confrontation from Apophis so this isn't new to us."
"We might need to get used to this but well... This could toughen them up actually." Dan let out a laugh. "If they can't handle some scrapes and bruises then maybe I shouldn't have let them get into hero work if they're this cowardly."
"Dad!" Lila squeaked out. "This is serious."
"I know." Dan gave the two a smile, "but well... It's best if we stay positive. He didn't receive any lethal injuries so it is no use for worry."
"It's just a few bumps and bruises. If he would have gotten our injuries however..." Catherine sighed, "I would be beside myself in worry. Your father and I had taken some greater hits, even bigger than what William is going through and still continue fighting."
"That..." Lila swallowed, "that sounds hard."
"It was." Catherine agreed. "But we got through it else we wouldn't have had you four."
Dan grinned and ruffled Lila's hair despite her protests, "Yes and unless I toughen my boys up they won't be able to go through the emotional turmoil."
"Yeah... It's pretty stressful." Lila sighed, "How did you two do it?"
Catherine and Dan shared a smile before Catherine answered, "We bonded through our injuries and laughed about it after. We made light of the situation."
"When you had called and said William was injured, we panicked. We had thought he was at the brink of death but when we arrived and saw him slightly patched up by your handiwork no doubt, we calmed a bit." Dan shrugged. "When the boys explained, we relaxed properly."
"When will you talk to them about it?" Lila tilted her head.
"Talk about what?"
