As the two stepped out of camp Red began to speak, “I suppose Burn didn’t give you a tour of our territory?”
“No..” Streak responded.
Red dipped her head, “I figured, but it's fine,” she cooed, “I get to show you around myself then!” the fox was quite level headed, calm and content. She always seemed to be in a pleasant mood. Despite her peaceful kindness and her missing limb, Streak still noticed the strong muscles that shown through her silky pelt. For a moment Streak was glad knowing that foxes don’t eat cats as prey. Red must've noticed because she set her thick tail on the cat’s shoulder as they walked toward the left paw side of the camp. “Is something the matter?” the warmth of her voice calmed the meek molly kitten.
Streak shook her head, releasing her fears, “It’s nothing,” she padded up a little closer to her campmate, “I was just thinking that you’re probably a good fighter; you look strong.” she complimented.
Red nodded with a weak smile, “Thank you.” she replied, “I train with Flame a lot, although I don’t know how good I can be in a real fight.” she explained, then she slowed her pace, soon stopping in front of a strange purple flowered plant, each flower emerged from a green leafy ball on the end of a stem and there were quite a few stems. Red bent down and dug into the ground, biting of one of the plant’s roots, when she finished, it was given to Streak to carry. “Burdock root,” she explained, “It’s good for belly aches and infections.” she said, not waiting for a response she walked past the plant, Streak followed.
Within moments they both stood on a large rock cliff, Streak leaned over the edge to see that it overlooked a ravine with a river, “We call this place Rise Cliff,” Red spoke, “It’s the best place to watch the sunrise or the moonrise.” she praised the location. It was beautiful, Streak had never seen anything like it, “It’s also the clearest place to see Nightpire.” Red said. They stayed there for several long moments, staring off toward the cliff, until Red turned around to lead Streak around the bushes that surrounded the meadow. They got to a rocky area and right in between the hard stone and soft, grassy dirt was a large patch of brightly colored red and yellow flowers, the patch was a couple of cat pounces long and several more cat pounces wide.
Red pointed her muzzle to the rock flooring as she stepped into the mini flower field, “If you walked too far that way you’d be on top of Flame’s cave.” She said, then reached down to one of the flowers, “Poppy sap and seeds make you sleepy and help reduce pain.” she bite of one of the stems and carried the flower in her mouth, being careful to not let the seeds spill out.
They continued around their camp, Red started to fill the silence with words muffled by the flower she carried, “We don’t have a healer.” she stated, “Shine and I know enough to take care of minor wounds and illnesses but neither of us are suited.” she paused, “No.. I am suited to be a healer, I’m weak..” she said quieter.
Streak turned to her, her voice even more muffled by the root, “You look stronger than any cat I’ve scene,” she pointed out, “And you’re probably stronger than most dogs.”
Red looked down in embarrassment, “It's been a very long time since I've been in a real fight,” she sighed, “It’s part of a healer’s duty to attempt peace at all costs while still protecting their camp or empire.” Her pace slowed, “Last time we were attacked, I ran away, Shine had to fight off a dog by herself. Doesn’t sound like I’m good at keeping peace.”
Streak thought for a moment, “But Shine isn’t suited either,” she concluded, “Unless she tried to make peace like you said?”
Red responded, “Shine is a brave fighter, she’d be wasting her time being a healer.”
“But don’t healers need to be brave as well?” Streak asked, “I can’t imagine trying to keep the peace when an angry dog is involved.” She thought for a moment, “Maybe you could practice fighting all of us, not just Flame.” she said, “Then you’ll be prepared for anything, and also learn what strengths to lean on when in battle with predators other than wolves.” Streak knew she had no right to talk, she never fought back against her mother or sister, ‘That’s different’ she told herself, ‘You had no control.’
Red stopped in front of a bushy tree, it had spike like leaves and was covered in blue berries, “Juniper berries strengthen the body, it helps when creatures are ill.” She said, reaching to pick some of the berries.
Both Red and Streak’s mouths were filled with berries as they headed back to the entrance of the camp. Altogether, Streak concluded, their territory was quite small, Burn and her had to travel fairly far from it just to hunt. Red lead her back into the camp where no creature waited for them. The fox quickly stepped through and pushed her way between the bushes where it led to Flame’s cave. Streak hesitated behind her, she'd never gone there before, she couldn't quite understand why she hesitated but she shook it off and followed wordlessly.
It lead to a second clearing, a bit larger than the main one. A few bushes surrounded two caves, one on the right made of rock and the other weaved from bracken leaves and various other sticks on the left. Red went into the bracken one, not checking to see if the cat was following. Streak stepped into it in time to see Red set the berries down in one pile and let the poppy fall onto the floor next to another dried flower, she set the berries into the same pile, she looked around and saw a root that matched hers. She set them together then turned to Red, who was already fiddling with the flower, “Go tell Flame we’ve returned,” the fox commanded distractedly, “I’m gonna get the seeds out of the poppy.”
Streak nodded and turned out of the cave of plant, heading straight to the more cave like cave across the small clearing. When she drew closer, she noticed three figures heading out; Flame, Ash and Shine. Streak padded up to them, “Red told me to tell you that we’ve returned.” she said.
“Alright,” Flame giggled lightly, “Ash and I are going hunting, Shine is in charge while I’m gone.” Shine stood slightly taller as her leader said her name. Streak nodded at Flame as the she-wolf passed her.
Streak stepped closer to Shine, dipping her head to the temporary leader, “I’m going to my den.”
Shine replied with a nod and Streak walked off.
