Well, here I am. Stuck as usual. In an airport looking out of the window hating myself. Why you may ask? Well because life just sucks like that. Ever since my mom went to the mental institute it's been crazy. Everybody has been rushing and pushing me around as if I'm some mental case as well. Since then everything good in my life has become shitty. My mom's had several hallucinations about death and things coming after her. I almost believed her once just because of how scared and convinced she looked. Well I guess now I will never know.
For now, I will be living with my single aunt because there is just no one else in the world that could care less about me right now. At the airport I am sitting in a chair waiting for a woman that I haven't seen in about eight years. Since I'm sixteen I guess that you could say that it's been a while. The only thing that I remember is shiny black hair and tan skin, at least I think she had green eyes. I don't even think were related since I have pale blond hair and burgundy eyes. It doesn't bother me; I only resemble my mom and look at what happened to her. "Kathy!" a woman with green shining eyes yelled. "Kill me now," I thought.
"Aunt Rose," I replied giving her one of my best fake smiles. She had two umbrellas, a tight white long-sleeved shirt, and denim skinny jeans that hugged her curves.
Just as I remembered she was beautiful. Her and my mom had stolen the pretty gene and had left me with nothing but a few curves and 5'7 in height. "ITS BEEN YEARS!" she said hoping to get me excited. I didn't want to let her down so I acted excited as well.
"Do you still live in Mason Valley?" I asked genuinely out of curiosity. "Yep, Kathy you're going to love it there! There are lots of kids your age, great hangouts-"she began, but I had already stopped listening. I just wanted to graduate high school and move on with my life like a normal person. Everyone expected me not to be able to move on after my moms psychotic break, without realizing that I already was trying and that the pressure made it worse. She finally stopped talking and grabbed my luggage to help me get outside. As we moved towards the parking lot I saw a flicker of movement in the dark sky. "What the hell?" I thought.
Then all of a sudden a huge black feather landed in my hair. "Eww." I said in disgust , couldn't I get at least one day of good luck?
"What is it?" said Rose unlocking the car. "Just a bird or something." I replied. She eyed me suspiciously, "We don't get birds like that here in the valley." I shrugged it off. Random stuff like that would only happen to Katherine Goldsworthy.
We reached her house in about thirty minutes. Looking around I noticed that the neighborhoods were small and I figured that they wouldn't take time to get used to. I began to feel comfortable at the thought. In my hand I still had the black feather clutched, it was about the size of my hand and shiny. I don't know why, but something had told me to keep it. Her house looked amazingly comfortable. It was a simple white house, not big or small, and had steps leading to the door with a garage on the left. She parked the car in front of the garage and grabbed some of my suitcases to help me out. It was only drizzling outside but i hated getting my mid-back length hair wet.
Rose opens her front door and we walk in. "She has a nice house for someone living alone," I thought. There was a dining room attached to the kitchen and a big living room space with a flat screen. There was a bathroom to the right of the corridor and stairs to the left.
"Your room is the first door to the left at the top of the stairs and I will let you freshen up a bit," and with that she disappeared into the kitchen area leaving me alone to take my stuff up.
I took my suitcase up and stopped at the first door to the left. The only other door was at the end of the small hallway which was Rose's room. I opened the door and saw that the room had been decorated in a soft baby blue and white. It was fairly big and had a bathroom attached. The bed was a queen size bed with white sheets and white pillows. The closet was nice and would take all of my stuff. The body length mirror was exactly me, and the white dresser or makeup station would do just fine.
I smiled in silent relief and put the black feather that I had caught on my dresser. On the dresser was a note that read, "First day of school is tomorrow, you shouldn't be that behind since it is only October. I hope that junior year will be a blast for you! (School supplies are on the floor by the bed including a book bag for you) get excited for your first day at Mason Valley High!! Love, Aunt Rose."
My smile left my face almost instantly. Obviously I couldn't ditch school forever even though they gave me some leave to help my mom in September. "Beep!" I looked around and heard the noise coming from an intercom by the bed. I clicked the red button and said, "Yes?" "I got some dinner down here that I think you will enjoy," Rose replied and clicked off.
I sighed and got changed into some of my comfy clothes. I made a mental note to unpack first thing after school and headed downstairs. The hallway light was on and I saw Rose carrying two plates of lasagna into the dining room. She smiled at me and set one down by her own. My stomach growled in gratitude of the smell.
"Airplane food must have sucked, "she nodded at my plate. I nodded in agreement and sat down as she passed me a fork.
"Maria didn't cook much did she?" she asked with keeping her tone light. My mom, cooking? Not a chance.
"I can't even remember our last family meal," I said sharing no emotion.
"What about your dad?" she asked beginning to dig into her own food. Her face seemed to tense up slightly at the word dad but I paid her behavior no mind.
"He's still fighting in Iran, I haven't heard from him since," I said sadly. My dad was basically a no show. My mom rarely discussed him and whenever she did all she would say is that, "Your father serves a worthy cause," like that ever made sense.
"I almost forgot one of our neighbors will be walking you to school so be ready by 7:30am. Her name is Danielle, I also asked her to show you around since your both juniors. "she said filling the silent void.
"Okay, sounds like fun," I said looking at our now empty plates. "I'm going to get this, you go up and get some rest," she said standing to clean the dishes. I stood up and walked upstairs to my room. I hadn't even noticed the balcony doors in my room until I saw it open. I walked toward it slowly and looked out over the railing noticing that there was enough space on the balcony for a chair. A breeze blew in and I shivered. On the floor was an identical black feather.
I picked it up in shock, and closed the balcony doors locking them efficiently. I put the black feather by the other one that I had found earlier and sat on the bed.
I took out my favorite sky blue comforter and began to daze. That night I dream't of high school, my mom, and black feathers.
