Adventures of Queen Rika Book 1

The first voyage

The first voyage

Dec 04, 2019

The sun came up as the others arrived at the docks. They started getting into the boat, and that's when I noticed the dungeon master sitting silently in the head of the boat. I felt uneasy as I picked up my still sleeping daughter, and climbed in the boat; sitting down in front of the war forged. Everyone had bags and several weapons so the boat became crowded. Looking at me the dungeon master asked, “Rika, you didn't bring anything?”

Everyone turned to me and I lower my eyes as I speak, “Being in town was too dangerous for my daughter.”

The wolfman grunted as the others looked at me like we might end up being a burden. Then the dungeon master spoke, “Well, that's that. Let us begin.”

The land we were headed to was in murky waters, which was odd for the middle of the ocean. I saw several decomposing bodies lying in the water answering many questions and raising so many more. My daughter's light purple body shivered against me as she saw the bodies, we moved past. Just then I looked up to see the war forged staring at us a clear question on his face.

“Who's the father of your daughter?” He asked no judgment crossed his face, only curiosity, “He certainly wasn't a drow.”

I looked away, “She actually. Drows are able to choose their mates regardless of gender or species. So, she was a human, the queen to be specific.”

The dungeon master smirked under his cloak, while everyone except the war forged looked at me with a mixture of shock and disgust. Ty leaned forward looked at me then laid back relaxed, “So that's why you're on this mission. I may not know what happened between you and the queen, but I do know that what has you so scared over your safety is dealing with what the queen told her people.”

I looked away ashamed and stared at the bottom of the boat. That's when I felt it. The shiver down my spine. Instinctively I lifted my staff and pointed it ahead of us, but before I could do anything the dead had already risen. I shrunk back holding my daughter close I was enveloped in fear. I watched as the dungeon master rose at the bow of the boat, looked at me smiling, and then disappeared like mist. Everyone else pushed the boat faster as the dead trailed behind walking along the water's surface. Finally, when we reached land my wits came about me again. I turned to the rear of the boat as the dead drew closer. I tried to think of what I could do. Several spells swirled in my mind as the light around my staff grew dark. I released the energy, and the dead stopped. They lumbered there for a minute silent and unmoving, before turning and shredding each other to pieces. I dropped to the bottom of the boat watching what I had done. Everything else left me until I felt my daughter's arms wrap around me.

“Mommy it's ok. I know you didn't mean to.” She hugged me tighter as we watched the sun fall down behind the water.

The wolfman snorted and then spoke, “Where did the dungeon master go?”

We all looked across the water and then at each other. That was the one question none of us had the answer to. Silently we all agreed to make camp on the beach tonight as we would have to figure out our plans for tomorrow. None of us trusted the waters to give us food or nourishment. Not with all the drowned, and the mess I caused. We all kept alert until one of us decided it was time to rest. Ty took the first watch as he was a war forged with no need for sleep. I closed my eyes and waited for day to come.
