“Dacia.” Nesmir sighed, looking at the aggravated sellsword. “It is I, Iola... I have certain abilities that are not considered normal. This young guardsman, Nesmir... he is in my thrall.”

“How are you...?” The mercenary’s gray eyes went wider than Iola had ever seen before.

“Patience, young warrior. All will be revealed in time.” Haas’ voice grew sepulchral. “The hour is upon us... Iola, my child, prepare yourself...”

“But grandfather...I want to see you again... I beseech you.”

“You see me, my dear child, more lastingly than you ever have.” The aging shaman replied most soothingly. “In your mind right now... and in your heart forever.”

Nesmir went stiff as Haas drew him closer, into an embrace.

Iola felt herself engulfed in the comforting warmth of a loved one.

She felt so safe and secure.

She was a child once again, so happy and at peace with the world.

Tears of joy freely flowed down her face and her mind exploded in a myriad of colours and hues she never knew existed.

“What’s happening?” Dacia asked sombrely. “The old man... is he dead?”

“Yes.” Iola replied, as she stared down at her grandfather through Nesmir’s eyes.

Haas lay on the ragged pallet with a peaceful expression on his face, as if he were asleep and having a pleasant dream.

“But what just happened?” Dacia pressed as they stepped out of the cell.
