“The fresh air of the mountains... on my face and in my hair” Iola murmured to herself. “I never thought I would miss that so much.”
“You’ll have to miss that for a while longer, little one.” Dacia’s strong voice startled her. She was yet to getting accustomed to the mercenary’s acute sense of hearing.
“Oh, Dacia!” Iola looked up at the approaching woman. “I can’t express how glad I am to see you again.”
“Likewise, Dearie.” The taller woman grinned as she looked around the surrounding area. “Now come, we must lay low at the inn for a few days...”
“But shouldn’t we leave the city now?” Iola furrowed her brow in confusion. “I must return to my people... they must know of my grandfa...”
“In time.”Dacia’s strong fingers curled around her upper arm gently and led her away from the alley she was hiding in. “We can’t leave Sidusca yet, the City Watch is on high alert... news of the old man’s demise is already spreading like wildfire.”
“But it’s barely been a few hours...” Iola protested, walking hurriedly alongside Dacia’s longer stride.
“This is a big city, word travels fast.” The taller woman replied and pointed at the inn they were renting a room at.
“What shall we do now?” Iola wondered as they pushed their way into the crowded dining hall of the inn.
“We eat and drink.” Dacia ushered her toward a vacant table. “And you will regale me with this special gift that you possess.”
“Yes, I suppose I must... other than your fee, I do owe you an explanation.” Iola nodded in agreement as they sat down to a meal of roasted fowl and fresh bread rolls.
“You can keep the gold.” Dacia surprised her. “I’m beginning to get overly fond of you, little Iola... and I want to be your friend.”
