I let out a deep breath as I follow my class into our seats. Looking around, I spot several parents with cameras, pointing to their children with proud looks in their eyes. Some of my classmates were waving back with tears pricking their eyes. A painful tinge rang through my chest, forcing me to look ahead with pursed lips.
...
'Mommy, daddy look at mah dwess!'
'You look so cute Tuli!'
'That's my pretty princess.'
'That's because I dressed her, of course.'
'Thank you big sister!'
...
I shook myself out of the memory, realizing that I was already in my seat. Taking small breaths, I look ahead and notice that Wendy-Ann was sitting right in front of me. I tried not to let out a groan and just decided to do my best to stay unnoticed. Soon after we were seated, the principal came up to make a speech that I barely listened to, choosing to look around against my better judgement. Not finding the face I so desperately wanted to find, I faced front with a deep frown.
Seriously Tuli, she hasn't shown up for seven years. Why would she decided to now?
My sulking was interrupted, however, when a fanfare rung through the large room.
"Graduands and guests, I now proudly welcome our Honorable Leaders, God Solaris and Goddess Lunaria!"
I snapped my head to my left, where two almost glowing beings stood up from the front row. My eyes widen as I took in their appearance as if it was for the first time. I first looked at God Solaris, he was so tall and wide that I felt intimidated from even from the middle row, power sliding off of him in waves. His unique gold skin was practically blinding me so looked towards Goddess Lunaria. She was a beautiful as always, her sliver hair falling on her shoulders in a graceful way, complementing her blue skin and icy blue eyes.
My eyes followed them all the way to the podium, entranced. Goddess Lunaria came to the microphone first, clearing her throat a little before speaking.
"Good day to my dear teachers, guests and most importantly, my fruitful graduands. I will be speaking for Solaris and myself. I am very proud of you all for making it here to this esteemed and important occasion! And think I speak for everyone when I say you all deserve a round of applause for successfully becoming graduates!" she announced, proceeding to clap.
I felt a smile spread on my lips as the room filled with applause, pride welling up inside me. Once the claps faded into silence, she continued.
"Now students, I know you all want to skip to the assigning segment but before that I must tell you this," the beautiful Goddess started. "No matter what you are assigned as, whether it be a doctor, one of our *Kidemonas, a hover-board developer or even a simple farmer, you represent this school. You represent your parents, teachers and most importantly...yourself. There is something special inside of all of you that makes you fit for that position. So, on behalf of Solaris and myself, I wish you all the best in your assigned positions!" she finishes off with an encouraging smile.
I couldn't help but stand up and clap as she stepped away from the podium, along with many others in my graduating year. I felt so motivated for really no reason but it felt like she was speaking right to me. Something felt different.
Eventually, the hall calmed down and we sat back down as the assignment segment began. God Solaris came to the podium with a stack of cards in his hands, smiling softly as he spoke.
"Well Lunaria took already took all the words out of my mouth," small chuckles echoed the room. "so I'll just say, congratulations graduates! You all worked hard and are here to reap your rewards! So let's start! I'll be going in alphabetical order according to last names starting with...Carlos Acebo!"
I allowed my thoughts to drift as they called up graduates one at a time. There was one thing I always wondered about assignments which was, how did they calculate who goes where? Was it grades? But I've heard that many people who used to have bad grades got into high positions. So could it be school records? But there was that one violent kid who was assigned as a scientist. What else could it be then?
"Kendall Valli!" I snapped my head to the stage where the aforementioned teen was going up the stairs to collect her assignment sheet. Wendy-Ann and Rue seemed to be holding their breaths in anticipation from my perspective.
But I couldn't help but wish that she got assigned as a toilet cleaner.
Forgive me Goddess Lunaria for such awful thoughts...but she kinda deserves it.
"Miss, you are assigned to the position of dietitian in the *Orient district." God Solaris said.
Oh thank you God Solaris! She's going to be so far away! This is way better!
Goodbye, Kendall Valli...wait.
I turned to the boy sitting next to me, "Excuse me, did you hear him say Tuli Lu?" I asked.
He narrowed his eyes at me in an annoyed manner. "Maybe you should have been paying attention, freak." he spat.
I fight the urge to curse at him, planning to ask someone else when I heard Wendy-Ann voice.
"They haven't called you yet, Tulips. Cool your tits." she said, keeping her gaze fixed on the stage.
I blinked at her before hurrying to say thanks. "Th-"
"Don't thank me. I'm just hoping that they haven't called you because you weren't assigned anywhere. Just left to take whatever sh*tty job you get offered." she snarled out, making me flinch a bit.
So I looked down, despite her not even facing me. Doubt filled me as I wondered if she was right. I prayed that she wasn't, tears already threatening to fall at the thought of it. I kept my gaze on my lap for the duration of the segment, praying that I got assigned somewhere, even if it was something small.
Please say my name, Lord Solaris!
