I could care less about the semantics of what holiday you celebrate--if you don't celebrate Christmas, then I'll be happy to accommodate whatever holiday you do celebrate.
To me, Christmas and the holiday season is not about whose birth your celebrating or what miracle you're respecting, it's about what happens during that time; it's one of the few times when families are willing to cross distances to gather together, it's an excuse for people who need one to be cheerier and happier, to be kinder to strangers, to give to those who may have less, to eat good food and to communicate about their lives. Yes we shouldn't need an excuse to do those things, but better that we do these things at certain times of the year than not at all.
I can understand people who may have the opinion that the holidays and especially Christmas have become too commercialized (I'm right there with you, bud) but I don't believe that we should do away with holidays altogether.
Christmas is wonderful in theory, but I personally can't enjoy it because if I want to join in my family's celebrations, I need to see my dad who abused me for years and I am currently not on speaking terms with. I am also not close to the rest of my family either and being in a large group makes me nervous. I get so terrified around Christmas every year that I spend most of the days leading up feeling nauseous. I know I could choose to not see my family but that would cause a MASSIVE amount of drama that I am not ready to deal with right now. Plus, spending Christmas alone is depressing. I share my feelings to let you know that not everyone enjoys the holiday season and sees it as a reason to be happy. Obviously, they would be wrong to try to destroy other people's happiness, like the person in the comic. But the holiday season is actually a time of great suffering for those who do not have good families, and that's totally valid, so I would just like you to keep that in mind next time someone says they hate Christmas. They may not be trying to be a party pooper but actually have to deal with real trauma and terror each Christmas season. (Once again, the guy in your comic was being a jerk in the last panel)
