Only dressed in a bath towel, Oahn came out of his private bathroom, heading for his dressing room. Although he usually uses the common bathroom, today, getting up later than usual, he did not want to catch up with running across the hall. Putting on dark colored jeans and a blue shirt, he returned a few minutes later to the bathroom, wiped his hair quickly with the towel, looked at himself in the mirror and ran a hand through his hair, tousling it. He finally left his room, hurrying. He ran down the stairs and found himself quickly in the kitchen. There, he found all his little family. His father cooking, his mother setting the table, his brother and sister sitting quietly around the table. Today was different from other days. Although busy, it was one of the only days his parents did not go to work. Today wasn't an anniversary or the day of a special event. No, today could be significant or remained a day like any other. Today they celebrated the joy, the pride of the existence of the human being. But not of any human being. Today, May 5th, they celebrated Children's Day. Although Oahn and his sister were no longer children, they will still be children in the eyes of their parents. Each person remains a child in the eyes of their parents. But if this celebration were considered as something administrative, then only Oahn's 11-year-old younger brother was still seen as a child.
Oahn went to the gas stove where his father was and greeted him with a kiss on the cheek. He did the same with his mother before going to sit next to his sister. Their eyes met for a few seconds and two smiles lit up those lips as a sign of greeting. As for his little brother, he rubbed his hair energetically, receiving a plaintive cry from the latter.
Once the breakfast was ready and put on the table, the little family began to converse, the joy of this national holiday covering their hearts.
"So what kind of activity are we going to do today?" Oahn asked between bites.
"This year, your father and I decided that we will spend the day outside," Oahn's mother announced cheerfully.
The announcement was accompanied by shouts of joy from Minho, who stood up and went to kiss his parents lovingly.
In previous years, generally, the Park family traveled to Busan to visit the parents of Oahn's mother. There, they did a lot of activities outside but staying inside the property. They didn't really venture into the streets of Busan, or only after dark. During the day, the three children had the right to their favorite dishes. It had become a ritual in this celebration of children's day. This year, this day was different. «As everything was changing, even such a common day had to change», Oahn thought.
"And what are we going to do?"
"We will take you to an amusement park," Oahn's mother said, sideways glancing at the youngest sibling, smirking.
The news surprised Oahn and he dropped his chopsticks, which banged against his bowl of rice with a loud noise.
"Did you convince dad to go to such a place?" Jimin said, stunned.
"Before we became your parents, we were children and teenagers. Don't think that we are too old for not being intrepid and young!" Their father answered in a sustained voice.
"Well, I want to see that!" Jimin exclaimed loudly and excitedly. "I want to see you in the attraction that gives the most feelings!" She added defiantly.
"Fine," her father said, offering his daughter his hand.
Jimin shook her father's hand forcefully, signing their agreement.
"But you're not afraid it will be too crowded?" Oahn asked, worried.
"It's May 5th, any public place will be crowded," his mother said.
"And you still want to go? There will surely be hours of waiting, children screaming, crying. All the inconvenience of a public place on a national holiday," Oahn complained.
"Oahn," his mother said his name in a soft voice, "are you not the joker and player of the family? How can you not be glad about such an announcement?"
Oahn shrugged.
Oddly, he couldn't be as happy as the others. He was happy, it was a fact, but he didn't understand why this May 5th had to be different from the others. Oahn could adapt easily to change, but in recent times there was too much evolution in his life. And that brought the walls dangerously close to him.
"Moreover, I guess you already have something planned today, right? I mean, tonight, right?" His mother added kindly.
Oahn gulped, looking at his bowl of rice. How did she know? How did she know he would not be here tonight?
Oahn simply nodded by way of a response. His mother smiled faintly and said in a soft voice:
"We can understand that this day does not have the same meaning for you and your sister, but the family is not just about you two. I can understand that you are young and that you certainly have other more important things to worry about, but I want the family to be one of your main thoughts."
Oahn listened attentively to his mother's words, staring at his little brother, who ate silently but greedily in front of him. He knew that his mother was right and that he didn't have to be selfish. Or maybe it was jealousy since he and his sister had never had the chance to have such a surprise on that famous day. But in any case he wanted to make his little brother sad because of his attitude. Then he will spend this day having fun as he never had fun, enjoying a wonderful family time, before joining his friends once the coolness of the night has covered Seoul.
The breakfast ended in a serene atmosphere, with different conversations filling the air of the kitchen. Around 10:30am, the Park family left their big house going to the amusement park.
Standing in the middle of a queue, behind his sister and younger brother, Oahn patiently waited their turn for the pirate ship. He couldn't remember the number of times that he had visited this amusement park with his friends and how many times he had been in this ride. Many of his friends were screaming when they were inside, letting Oahn wondering how they could be afraid in such an attraction. It did not go particularly fast and the height it reached wasn't scary (except for those suffering from vertigo or acrophobia). As for his sister, Oahn didn't know if she had already tested this experience, surely. But for his eleven-year-old brother, it was a big first!
Finally seated in the middle seats of the bow or the stern of the boat, Oahn found himself between his sister and his brother. The ride was still stationary as his little brother held him tightly by the arm. His gaze in front of him, Oahn looked away to stare at Minho.
"Is everything okay?" He asked him in a soft voice.
Minho nodded to say yes. Oahn had a sympathetic smile and added, leaning toward him:
"You know, you have all the rights to be afraid."
"But I'm not affraid," Minho assured with a small quaver in his voice.
Oahn smiled at his answer and rubbed his hair with affection.
Oahn understood that his younger brother didn't want to reveal aloud and in front of such an audience that he was afraid. He understood that he didn't want to be noticed, even if he wasn't the only one shaking like a leaf holding on to someone as if it was the rope that held them to life.
"Thank you," his little brother whispered, for not asking him more questions or putting more pressure on his shoulders.
Oahn made a slight nod to say «you're welcome». For Oahn, it was how the eldest in the family had to treat their youngest. They shouldn't impose choices or decisions on them. They only had to listen and guide when necessary. Of course, he didn't think he was the best of big brothers, but he was trying his best to be a good role model for Jimin and Minho. Even if he sometimes jumped into the precipice or he took in the face the wall. Unfortunately, Oahn wasn't infallible and to err was always human. He, too, continued to grow and he will continue to grow. If he hadn't understood this lesson by observing his parents, how could he have passed it on to Jimin and Minho?
A few seconds after Oahn's little brother's «thank you», the boat began to move slightly back and forth. As soon as the hull vibrated, the grip around Oahn's arm tightened, his little brother's nails sticking in his flesh. Although the fabric of his shirt separated the contact of these nails with his skin, the pain was still significant.
The boat went faster and faster, making the first screams heard. The nails went deeper into Oahn's skin, but that didn't stop him from joining the screams of joy. One hand hanging on the security fence, and the other squeezing his sister's, and in the air, he allowed himself to close his eyes. The sensation of his belly rising when he came several meters above the ground, the cold wind whipping his face was pure pleasure. It had been years since he had had so much fun! Of course, he went out practically every week with his friends in nightclubs, but did he enjoy himself so much? Did he hear people scream with joy, fear, surprise? Did he hear laughter coming out from the bottom of the hearts? Did he see glitter in people's eyes? No. He could only observe the melancholy and monotony of life. Here, on this day, his heart was beating again. Sitting, his little brother glued to him screaming that it stops and always hand in hand with his sister, screaming in unison the same happiness, he rediscovered the youth he had long stored in a closet he double-locked. At this moment, he could say that he was living again. That he became a little boy again.
Then the movement of the boat was slower until it stopped. Short of breath and dishevelled hair, Oahn let go of his sister's hand and the security fence. He wiped away the tears that had agglutinated to the corners of his eyes because of the wind and ran a hand through his hair to re-tidy them to a minimum. Then he looked down at his little brother. He was still clinging to Oahn.
"Minho?" Oahn called him, gently putting a hand on his shoulder.
"Never again. Never again," Minho sobed.
Oahn wanted to laugh at the situation, but hold back his laughter. He sneaked a peek at his sister and communicated to her by this simple contact the situation. She reacted with a small affectionate smile and stood up. Oahn took Minho in his arms and they came down from the attraction.
The three children returned to their parents and Minho found himself on both legs again.
"I don't think Minho will ride the pirate ship for a while!" Oahn commented.
The young boy getting a grip on himself, looked at his feet with embarrassment. Oahn's mother stooped slightly, wiped Minho's tears, and announced in a proud voice:
"My big boy is a real pirate, he doesn't need to get on this ship to prove that he is one!"
"That's right, Park Minho is the greatest pirate!" Oahn's father agreed, lovingly squeezing Minho's shoulder.
It was normal for a young child, or just for anyone, to be scared. A reaction as excessive as crying couldn't be commented on if you didn't know the reasons behind those tears. Everyone reacted differently to a fear and telling them how to react wasn't something to do. So no matter if Minho was eleven, five or twenty years old, he will have a pirate heart forever!
The next attraction was less stressful. Oahn, Jimin and Minho rushed into a mirror maze. If Oahn thought he had dexterity, he had just realized that this wasn't the case. Or maybe was he getting old? But he had taken no less than ten mirrors. And one of them had been very painful. So painful that he was afraid of breaking his nose. To make matters worse, in addition to make his brother and sister laugh, the latter had the good idea to record this scene. And on this video, it could be seen Oahn hit head-on the mirror. Oahn sighed saying that this moment will haunt him for life. If his children will never laugh at his misfortune, other people will have the pleasure of doing it for them. Oahn kept repeating that the wheel will turn and that he will also have his turn to laugh at them. They only had to wait to see!
A little before noon, Oahn rode one last attraction with his father. The latter hadn't forgotten his promise and he was going to ride the most thrilling attraction of the park. The harnesses fastened, the legs in the void, father and son looked at each other straight in the eye.
"Ready?" Oahn asked, his heart pounding.
"I think you are never ready for such a thing!"
"Tell yourself that you're twenty years younger!" Oahn put things into perspective, chuckling.
"We'll see if you'll say the same thing when you get my age!"
Oahn's father had just enough time to finish his sentence that the attraction set in motion.
"Just enjoy the ride, dad!" Oahn screamed, a huge smile on his lips.
The rollercoaster tour lasted less than a minute and yet it was the most intoxicating and soothing moment of his day. His arms in the air, screaming until he loses his voice, looping after looping, tight turn after tight turn, Oahn was happy to have experienced such a moment with his father. Maybe that wasn't much for many children, but for Oahn, the son of a wealthy entrepreneur who was almost never at home, or when he was, locked himself in his office, this family day reminded him that this tall and a bit surly man, the elegant woman, the lively teenager, and the shy child were the lights of his life. These five people, on this day, when the weight of life faded away as time went by, formed a happy and supportive family.
