“Oh... er, really?”Iola stared at the rough-looking woman with wide eyed wonder. “But I am... you are a...”
“Does that matter?”Dacia grinned as she hefted a large mug of sour ale. “We’ve been through two life-and-death situations together... we care for each other as would we our kin, so why not?”
“I didn’t mean it that way...” Iola bit her lower lip. “I’ve never really had a friend before.”
“Me neither.” The mercenary sank her ale-stained teeth into a hunk of roasted duck. “...never too late to start though.”
“Yes, you are right on that count.” Iola had to agree, nibbling at a piece of sliced pineapple.
“I don’t want to push this on you, take your time.” Dacia’s dark gray eyes peered hard at her. “You have suffered a very dear loss...”
“Oh, no! No!” Iola laughed nervously. “My grandfather still lives, within me... I feel as if he’s never been away... I know it, in my mind and in my heart.”
“That... is good.” The other woman nodded grimly. “Fortunate really, not all are so blessed.”
“I... suppose I am.” Iola wiped away the dribble of juice from her chin. “I have... been blessed.”
“Speaking of blessings, Iola...” Dacia leaned back on her wooden chair, making it groan in protest. “What is this... gift that you have? You can get into people’s minds... and control them?”
“I... I can.” She suddenly felt very self conscious. “I mean, I’m still very new at it... I just found that out myself here in the marketplace... when you threw those knives at me.”
“How do you mean?”
“I could... sense all the people around me... around us.” Iola propped her elbows onto the table and pressed her fingertips to her temples. “I could hear their thoughts; see their emotions... inside my mind. I thought I was going mad, but then I could control the flow... with a little focus.”
“And then you learned how to control their minds?” Dacia chewed on her lip.
