The screeching of her alarm woke her up. She jolted awake and sat up with a start. Before she could move to turn off her alarm, someone turned it off for her. She turned and locked eyes with Lyssa.
“Interesting dream you were having,” Lyssa smirked at her.
Bex felt her cheeks flush.
“Were you peaking in on my dreams again!? I told you to stop that.”
“I was not peaking in; I was just feeling what you were feeling. Two different things, I am a woman of my word and promised not to spy on your dreams anymore.”
“Ugh, it was so weird,” Bex grumbled.
“Maybe we can reenact it.” Lyssa pushed her down onto the bed.
“Who said it was with you?” Bex raised an eyebrow.
She instantly felt Lyssa’s mood turn and cringed knowing she had done the wrong thing. Lyssa quickly pulled back and turned her head to look away from her. Pain clearly on her face.
“No! no, no, no. I was just teasing. Of course, it was with you, I mean who else would it be?” Bex quickly moved to comfort her.
“You should get ready for school Rebecca.” Lyssa stood up to leave.
“Lyssa, I was just joking. Lyssa come on, I’m sorry. Look we can reenact it.” Bex got up and embraced her.
Lyssa shook out of her embrace and took a step away, putting space between them. Bex could hear Lyssa’s thoughts and emotions, even though she didn’t want to. She knew what Lyssa was thinking, and Lyssa was thinking about Joan about how she had caught Bex kissing Joan.
Bex felt the shame of that moment weigh down on her as if it had just happened. She wanted to crawl under her bed and hide from the embarrassment and shame. That deep regretful shame she had put on herself.
For a moment they just stood there, neither saying anything. Nothing needed to be said as their thoughts did all the talking for them.
“Lyssa…” Bex tried.
“Did you dream of her?” Lyssa asked.
“No, I swear. A thousand times I swear. I would never.”
“You have no control of your dreams; dreams are often a way to express repressed feelings that we fear to say. Things like deep sadness, or loss, or… lust.”
“Lyssa, I didn’t dream of her,” Bex said firmly.
“Promise?” Lyssa turned her, her voice shaking just slightly.
Bex felt her heartbreak as she could feel the vampire’s vulnerability.
“I promise, I swear on my life. Joan wasn’t even in my dream.” Bex moved to grab Lyssa’s hands.
“Do you dream of me?” Lyssa asked.
“You used to spy on my dreams, you should know the answer to that.” Bex forced a smile for her.
Lyssa opened her mouth to say something but the sound of someone banging on the door made them both flinch.
“You better be up in there!” Bex heard her mother call.
“I am!” Bex shouted back.
Lyssa squeezed Bex’s hands in her own and they shared a look.
“Lyssa I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to—” Lyssa cut Bex off with a kiss.
Bex leaned into the kiss and closed her eyes to enjoy it.
“It’s okay,” Lyssa said as she pulled back, “I’m sorry for overreacting. I’ll see you at school, my love.”
Before Bex could protest Lyssa was gone in a flash.
The curtains to her window blew in the wind.
Bex groaned and banged her head against the wall.
“Stupid, stupid, stupid,” Bex grumbled to herself.
Once Bex had gotten over the initial sting of embarrassment she got washed up and dressed. Pulling on some blue jeans that fit her just right, and a nice dressy long-sleeved shirt that Lyssa had bought her. She knew it was one of Lyssa’s favorites on her and after the incident, she wanted to make the vampire happy and reassure her of her feelings. Bex got extra dolled up, which was very unlike her.
She made sure to fix up her hair nice, leaving it down. She eyed her sword necklace in her jewelry box, she hadn’t worn it since…
She then eyed Joan’s necklace right next to it, she reached for it but quickly thought better of it and grabbed a simple pearl necklace that Lyssa had bought her. She put on her boots that Lyssa had bought her and grabbed her new backpack, once again that Lyssa had bought her.
She quickly went down the stairs two at a time and nearly raced past her parents out the door when,
“Hold it!” Her mother ordered.
She halted at the door so abruptly she nearly fell forward.
“You know the rules,” her dad said from the table as he ate his breakfast.
Bex sighed and eyed her siblings who looked just as annoyed as her. Ever since the whole serial killer thing and Bex and Lyssa’s break up/make up where Bex nearly ran away Bex’s parents decided it was time for a few new rules in the house.
New rules,
1. Never leave the house without saying a proper goodbye.
2. Always make sure to keep your parents updated as to where you are and what you are doing.
3. No handling firearms. (this one was because of the lie that Joan and Bex made up to cover up the truth that someone had shot Bex.)
4. No more walking to school. (Bex was forced to ride with her siblings in her brother’s new car.)
And lastly but not least,
5. Their parents had to approve what they were wearing before they went out. (this was less about being strict and more about wanting to memorize what their kids were wearing in case something bad happened to them.)
“What are you wearing?” her mother made a face of confusion.
“What?” Bex looked down at herself.
“I think what your mother means is where did you get those clothes?” Her dad asked.
“Lyssa bought them for me.”
“I’ve been noticing a lot of changes to your wardrobe lately.” Her mother commented.
“Can we go now?” Nathan complained.
“You know the rules.” His dad said.
Abby sighed but went to her father and hugged him and then to her mother,
“Bye, mom and dad.” She said sarcastically.
“Next.” Bex’s mom said.
Nathan and Bex sighed and quickly moved to do the same.
“Now can we go?” Bex asked.
“Yes, have a good day at school.”
The three siblings walked outside and into Nathan’s car.
“Shotgun!” Abby called.
“No fair, I’m older,” Bex complained.
“Too bad,” Abby said as she hopped into the passenger seat.
“Nathan!” Bex complained.
“Seriously? It’s only day one, just don’t start. Besides schools is down the street anyways, you’ll only have to suffer for a few minutes.” He turned the heater on in his car.
“You suck.” Bex kicked the back of Abby’s seat.
“Hey! Watch the leather.” Nathan complained as he backed out of the driveway.
“I call shotgun for the rest of the school year.” Abby declared.
“You can’t do that!” Bex quickly objected.
“Can too, and you know why?”
“Enlighten us oh wise one.” Nathan teased as he turned up the radio a bit.
“Because if you don’t let me, then I’ll tell mom and dad you’ve been sneaking Lyssa in and out of the house at night.”
“What! I have not!” Bex denied.
“Have too, and I have proof.”
“You do?”
“Ha! You just admitted it.” Abby said in triumph.
“Whatever, have the front seat, more room back here anyway.” Bex crossed her arms and relaxed into the back seat.
“Nice one, I’ve taught you well.” Nathan fist-bumped Abby.
Bex rolled her eyes.
When they got to school Bex quickly walked up the steps two at a time in order to get to Lyssa who she could feel was waiting for her.
Once their eyes locked, she could feel Lyssa’s admiration and approval towards Bex’s appearance. Bex smiled happy that she could make Lyssa happy. They grabbed hands and walked over to the usual table.
Bex eyed her usual spot next to Joan and then glanced at Lyssa. She could already feel the vampire’s irritation towards the slayer. So instead of taking up her usual post, she sat next to Darci, stealing Mike’s seat.
Lyssa sat next to her, stealing Jaden’s seat.
Joan narrowed her eyes at the new seating arrangement. Lyssa gave her a cocky smirk. Darci eyed the two and sighed.
“Hey, I’ve been seat jacked,” Mike complained as he came back with his tray of food.
“I thought I’d mix it up a bit. New year, new seats?” Bex said.
Jaden shrugged and sat next to Joan, across from Bex. Mike sat next to him.
“It’s pretty quiet around here,” Darci commented.
“It is to be expected, a lot of people lost their friends and family,” Lyssa said.
“I’m just glad we didn’t.” Bex smiled at Lyssa and squeezed her hand.
“Me too.” Lyssa smiled back.
“They are having a sort of memorial to honor the lost, mainly Monroe. It’s tonight on the football field, you guys going?” Mike asked.
“Sure, I’ll go with you,” Bex said.
“Yeah me too,” Jaden said.
“I don’t have anything else to do,” Darci said.
“Wherever Rebecca goes, I go,” Lyssa said.
They all turned to Joan.
“I wish I could, but I have some things to take care of tonight.”
“Like what?” Bex asked.
“Just some slayer stuff. With my dad gone a lot of the responsibility fell onto my uncle but he’s been pretty sick lately and just not himself. So, I’ve been helping out. Just slayer stuff you guys don’t have to worry about it.”
“Yet somehow I’m still worried.” Lyssa glared at her.
“Well, you’ll have to get over yourself.” Joan shot back.
The table sighed in unison as the two glared at each other.
New year or not, some things never change.
