The Boy Who Went Boom

Chapter 2.5

Chapter 2.5

Jan 22, 2020

Daniel and Kristine exited the classroom hand in hand. The Inspector snapped to attention.

“I will have a report in a moment,” Kristine said to the Inspector. “Where is this boy’s grandfather?”

“Right here,” Daniel’s grandfather came bounding up to them. “Dan—is everything all right?”

“You should be very proud of your grandson here. He did remarkably well and helped us immensely,” Kristine continued.

Daniel’s grandfather looked at Daniel but then said sternly, “we’ll be talking about those truancies later tonight, son.”

“Those are forgiven for his exemplary behavior, sir. You might want to check your weekly food ration—there will be a little bit extra for you. Perhaps for an extra bottle of bourbon…”

“Oh—“ Daniel’s grandfather was surprised and a bit wary. “Thanks.”

“A veteran of your service deserves a reward, sir,” and Kristine put out her hand to shake. Daniel’s grandfather warily took it and as they shook a strange look crossed the telepath’s face.

Shots shattered the silence as soldiers suddenly appeared. They were scurrying into position mere yards from the classroom. They stopped and prepped their rifles. A giant man bounded around the corner and as he fell through the air, the soldiers fired. The plaza crashed with the gunfire.

Smoke filled the air. And the giant man continued to move forward. He ran out of the dark clouds as the bullets exploded against his skin. He bolted right as another volley of bullets shattered into small explosions against him.

He changed course again, expertly weaving away from the fire of the soldiers, and came straight at Daniel and his grandfather. Daniel’s grandfather was swatted out of the way by the man’s gigantic arm. Daniel turned to run but felt like his legs were made of lead. He couldn’t move fast enough. The giant man gained on him. It was Crusher, Daniel realized.

Crusher’s face was a twisted mass of anger and desperation. And he was getting closer. Daniel fell and suddenly felt very hot. Crusher’s fist collided with Kristine’s face sending her hurling through the air. The Inspector was tossed against a wall and Crusher got closer. Daniel started to shake. He shook and he shook. Crusher was right on top of him now. Daniel looked up in fear. Crusher was right above him. Daniel exploded.
