Morning arrived... I still can't fathom why there's no electricity. It should've been operating till at least one year because maintenance and all other things.
"No power at all..." I mumbled.
Andrew woke up and greet me with half lidded eyes. Still not sober for the morning call. I went to the toilet and it still worked. Thank god, because I can't live without a shower. I finished fast so that I can go back and make sure nothing happen. I can't let my guard down even though we built barricades downstairs. Who knows what can happen, even though I make traps with wire to alert us of unwelcome visitors.
"You know..." She looked at someone standing at the door. "I can't stay here."
"Why, Andrew?"
"I wanted to find my family." He replied shortly. It seemed like no matter how many friends we have, we're always putting family above them. Bonds connected by blood cannot be compared to something like friends. Even I can't.
"Stop moping," Tyler came out. It seemed like we woke him up.
"You wanted to find your family, right? Let's find them!" I was surprised. Oh well, it's better than just to survive, right? But...
"Ty, I know you wanted to help him. But don't forget. Our next objective is to find a safe place too. Evacuation zones, if we found it."
Tyler gulped. He can't leave his sister behind. He doesn't want to be alone. Even though it pained him, he reluctantly agreed. Rere smiled. Andrew placed a hand on his shoulder and whispered.
"It's fine. But promise me to always protect your sister, okay? And I will promise you that I will always be safe no matter where I go. Sounds fair?" Andrew reassured him and a nod came his way. Andrew doesn't want to break them apart just because of him, a person they just met.
"Let's prepare, shall we?" We put every supply we had. Food, water, tool kit and lastly weapon. But what I missed the most was, the cozy sofa. I hope we can find them again. We put off the barricade and sneaked past them. It was easy, maybe too easy. I had a hunch that something bad was going to happen. Then a loud boom came from behind. Not far from us. Looters.
"Run!" We ran. So that's why there's not many zombies. They knew we were there from the start, but didn't know the exact place. Now... we practically screwed. So, we ran and tried to find a safe place, but nothing seemed safe except...
"That building!" I pointed at it and thankfully, they noticed. So we hid inside and close the door. But it doesn't work. I looked at it and it's connected to some machine. There must've been a key to close the door. Tyler noticed something and took out thr screwdriver. I helped him to unscrew it and he fixes it really fast while Andrew stood by and guarding us. Not a minute later, we have succesfully closed the door. It went down and lock itself. It can only be opened from the inside. They slammed the door angrily before they went away.
"So that's..." Andrew nodded. "Looters."
"Huh, we were lucky to get inside the building." I said. It looks like pharmaceutical building which clinically test trial some drugs. How do I know that? The brochure and logo reminded me of commercial appeared on television. The enhancement drug. All I know is that it can make people smarter or stronger, or that's what it said on television too.
"Rere, I know this may sound too late, but this is where I came from." I looked at Tyler. He seemed serious. Don't tell me...
"Yes. My condition came from here. My ex-father are part of this public company who controls every orphanage to supply them some... subject." He said and he teared up. So this is where it all began.
"I watched him experiment many other kids too. I thought they were like me. Scientist children, but they're not. I found a file, it's filled with the list of every orphanage, which the kids came from. I-I..." I put my hands on his shoulder and assured him that it's okay. He was just a child back then. He didn't have to feel guilty about it, but the story didn't end there.
"I tried to report it to social service and police, but they didn't have any proof except for my statement. This results in my father jailed for a long time."
"Wait, why?"
"My father is the black sheep of this company. I don't know why my father do this to me, but I love him. He doesn't deserve to be blamed for this alone." Rere understood the gist of it. His father only doing his job, for Tyler sake, but his experimentation on his child. She felt something missing.
"Is there anything you can remember, Ty? I mean what did he say to you before?"
"He said it was for my sake." For his sake? It doesn't make sense. What purpose his sensor had to do with his sake? Avoiding bully? No, his minds are those of a scientist. There must be a reason-- wait, there is one. Although it's just a speculation. There's no other reason. He knows about the infection. Other experiment also conducted here too. I told him, but it seems like Tyler holds a grudge against his father. Who can't blame him? Strapped to a chair without means to rest. Without father's love. I would blame him too.
"Wait, I don't understand. What are you guys talking about?" Oh right. We never told him about this. I tried to explain everything to Andrew and he finally understands our conversation.
"So, in short, this company is the source of this infection?" We nodded shortly. It seemed like this is deeper than we thought. This shady company which government built, experiment on orphan, it seemed like they planned it through. Even the aftermath of the outbreak. They managed to evacuate all personels here and Tyler here might be the key to solve this because his father are the only thing connected to him and this company which use him for their own sake.
They might discover something if they went deeper but will it be better for their own sake? Or is it just means to blame the company for all the causes of this disaster? They're about to find out.
