Bex was out on her usual morning run. She resumed her workouts, as part of her new year's resolution she wanted to be in tip-top shape so she could defend herself if needed. Her mind was clouded with all sorts of things that didn't make sense.
Ever since her and Lyssa's bond became complete her dreams consisted of what she could only conclude were Lyssa's memories. She didn't know how to broach the subject with the vampire. She herself knew it was an invasion of privacy, but it wasn't like she asked for it, it just happened.
It was officially day five of the freaky dreams. Sometimes they were tame and nice, just Lyssa doing something silly with Elizabeth or even Lacy. Other times, the other times not so much. Those other not so nice dreams often featured murder, death, sadness, and rage. She hated those most of all. She always woke up screaming and on the verge of a panic attack.
Yesterday she had gotten physically ill, having to run to the bathroom when she woke up. Lyssa keeps pushing her to talk about it, but she just doesn't know how. Bex is always careful not to think of the dreams when she knows Lyssa is awake and could hear her thoughts.
On her way back into the house she paused by the mailbox to grab the mail. She set it on the table and was about to walk away to take a shower when she spotted something with her name on it. She glanced around for her mom, but she was alone.
She then grabbed the white envelope and opened it.
It read as followed,
Regarding the inquiry about your daughter, Rebecca Cross. It seems as you have a serious problem and I highly recommend getting her help as well as therapy. This is not normal teenage behavior and it seems to me, at least how you described it, that your daughter has undergone a drastic personality change. It could be that a traumatic event in her life is causing her to shy away from you. Teenagers handle trauma differently, which can be challenging. I am glad you reached out. I have included a list of sources and recommendations. I urge you to call me so that we can discuss this topic further.
Sincerely,
Dr. Seward
Bex let the paper fall to her side as her hand clutched it so tightly it bent in several places. She felt angry, violated, confused. Her parents were going behind her back? What were they saying about her? They must have made her sound like a lunatic.
"Morning Rebecca, have a nice run?" Her mom walked into the kitchen to prepare breakfast.
"What's this?" Bex slapped it on the counter in front of her.
Her mom raised an eyebrow and grabbed the letter.
"You think I need help? That I need therapy?" Bex accused before her mom could finish scanning over the letter.
"Rebecca I can explain,"
"I can't believe you! You didn't even talk to me first." Bed felt herself getting defensive.
"Because I can't!" Her mom snapped.
Bex glared at her.
"I can't talk to you, you've shut me out completely! I never know what you are up to, sometimes you just run out of the house like it's an emergency and never tell me where you are going or when you will come back. If you will even come back at all. I want to know what is going on with my daughter and if this is what it takes then so be it."
Bex just shook her head, tears in her eyes. She didn't know why she was so angry, just that she was. She felt violated in some way like she had been betrayed. She didn't want to be around her mother, she didn't even want to look at her.
"Maybe next time I won't come back." Bex spat at her before running up the stairs.
"Rebecca!" Her mom called after her.
She flinched when she heard the bedroom door slam.
"Okay, what was that?" Bex's dad asked as he came downstairs.
"Here," Bex's mom sighed and shoved the paper in his hands before moving to cook breakfast.
"I told you to wait to tell her," Jeff sighed.
"She found out on her own! She opened the mail. I didn't tell her."
"Well, that's even worse."
"Ugh, I just, I'm at my wits end with that girl."
"Relax darling. Give it time."
"I've been giving it time! We are taking her to therapy even if I have to drag her myself."
He sighed.
At school, Bex was in a foul mood. Lyssa eyed her cautiously. In fact, everyone was eyeing her as Bex had a deep scowl on her face.
"Care to share with the class why you look like that?" Joan asked.
"My mom! She's so ugh! I hate her." Bex spat.
"Don't say that your mom is so nice," Darci said.
"No! She's ugh, she wants to put me in some type of therapy. She thinks I'm psychotic or something. She told a doctor about me. Without even talking to me first. She's unbelievable sometimes."
"Well... I mean..." Joan said.
"Don't you dare take her side." Bex snapped at her.
"I'm just saying I could see it from her point of you. You and Lyssa always running off together, all the lies you have to tell to cover up the truth. The strange change in behavior. You have to admit Bex that looks hella suspicious."
"I don't care! She can't just do that."
"Maybe you should just talk to her." Darci supplied.
"I've tried, but every time I do she gets all ugh! She doesn't even try to listen to me. All she hears is Lyssa and bam a switched is turned off. She won't even try to see things my way. She thinks Lyssa is bad for me and she's made up her mind."
"Parents are nightmares." Mike sighed.
"Amen to that," Jaden said.
"What about you? Any input?" Joan raised an eyebrow to Lyssa.
Lyssa was silent as she thought about what she was going to say, but before she could,
"I can't believe you; you take her side!?" Bex accused.
Lyssa sighed.
"Hello! It's you're fault she's suspects anything in the first place." Bex said.
"I'm just worried about you my love. Your mom does have a point, I don't want to talk about this here." Lyssa said.
"Has a point! Her point in case you didn't notice is that she hates you!"
"I don't think it is."
"So you're just going to defend her?"
Everyone cringed as they watched the fight unfold between the two.
"I think she has valid concerns."
"I can't believe you, you of all people."
"Your family has a right to be worried."
"My family should mind their own business."
"You are their business."
"I'm not someone's property!"
"I never said that."
"Well, it sure sounded like you did."
"They are just trying to look out for you."
"They are just trying to break us up!"
"Just be grateful you have a family!" Lyssa finally snapped at her.
Darci had covered her eyes and at this point peeked through her fingers. Even Joan had to sigh and agree with Lyssa on this one. At least Bex had both her parents who loved her so much to worry.
Bex's eyes got wide as she watched tears well up in Lyssa's eyes.
"At least you have a family, some of us aren't so lucky. So stop complaining and be grateful." Lyssa said before getting up and walking off.
"Lyssa wait!" Bex quickly got up to chase after her.
"No Rebecca, I need a moment." Lyssa quickly left, leaving a stunned Bex behind.
Bex flinched when the bell rang.
Darci handed Bex her bag and pat her on the shoulder.
"It's okay, she just needs to cool down," Darci assured her.
"Well, who needs her anyway!" Bex snapped before stomping off to class.
Darci sighed and looked at Joan.
"Don't look at mem" Joan walked off to class.
Lyssa found herself in a sour mood as well for most of the day. Rebecca didn't see things as she did, Rebecca was still very immature when it came to things like this. Lyssa was worried about her, about how Rebecca kept having nightmares and panic attacks. She wouldn't talk about it to her, nor was she willing to talk about it to her family. Lyssa was just worried.
Not to mention Lyssa felt a dull ache in her. Ever since that day she killed Lacy she's had this dull ache inside of her. Family. That's what it came down to. Even though Lyssa wasn't with Lacy, Lacy was still family to her. She had known the girl for years; she was part of her vampire family.
At the thought of her vampire family, the ache intensified.
She knew she couldn't go back to them, her pack would never take her back in, not after everything. She didn't really want to go back, considering the reason why she left in the first place. But that didn't mean she didn't miss her vampire family so much that she felt a constant ache inside of her.
For the past 20 or so years, Lyssa has been on her own. No family. No loved one. Not even a slave to keep her company, at least not until Rebecca. She just felt so lonely and bitter. What she would do to embrace her family just one more time.
At lunch, the table ate in silence as Bex and Lyssa were not talking to each other.
Bex knew why Lyssa was upset, she could hear the girl's thoughts and feel her emotions after all, but what she didn't know was why she was so upset. She couldn't explain it, she just was. She wanted someone to take her side, but the truth was she didn't even know what her side was. She knew she had every right to be angry, but she also knew she had no clue as to why she was angry.
Yes her parents were worried, nothing new there, but going behind her back like that? It just felt wrong to her. Like they didn't trust her judgment anymore. Like they thought of her as some helpless little girl. She felt offended and that's all there was to it.
After school Bex walked over to Joan,
"Hey, can I come over today? Maybe we can just hang out like we used to." Bex suggested.
"Sorry, I can't. Not today." Joan kept on walking towards her house.
"What? Why?"
"I have a date tonight." Joan smiled.
"You do! Who!?"
"Rooney."
Bex couldn't keep a sour look off her face, and Joan noticed it.
"Don't judge," Joan said.
"Her? Why her, she's..."
"A vampire slayer?"
"She tried to kill Lyssa, heck she tried to kill me!"
"Bex that's her job, she's a vampire slayer. I already talked to her, don't worry about it. She's going to leave your precious Lyssa alone."
"That's not what this is about."
"Then what is it about?"
"I'm just saying I don't think she's good news, Joan. I mean I'm happy you're dating, but her? She kind of gives off a psycho murderer vibe."
"You don't even know her."
"I've seen enough to know the girl is out of her mind."
"Are you just trying to pick a fight with me?"
"No! I'm being serious."
Joan paused in her steps and turned to face Bex so abruptly that Bex nearly bumped into her.
"My romance life is none of your business, so keep your biased opinions to yourself."
Bex just blinked at her in surprise. She sort of felt like Joan had just slapped her in the face.
"Joan I just want what's best for you."
"Like your parents want what's best for you?" Joan turned around and started walking again.
"It sort of feels like you are the one trying to pick a fight with me."
"I'm just saying you are the pot calling the kettle black. Rooney asked me out and I think she's cute so I said yes. No big deal."
"Kind of sounds like a big deal to me."
"Why's that?"
Bex shrugged but then realized Joan wasn't looking at her so she said, "I don't know."
"Go home, Bex. I have plans. Why don't you call you emo girlfriend and complain to her some more."
Bex stopped in her steps and glared after Joan.
"Are you just doing this to get at me?" Bex asked.
"What!?" Joan turned to face her.
"Admit it you are just going out with her to piss me off."
"Not everything is about you! I've moved on, big whoop. Sorry, I'm not in love with you anymore, get over yourself." Joan spat.
"Please, I know you, Joan. This is such a you thing to do. You are just trying to make me mad so I will pay attention to you."
"Fuck you!"
"I'm just being honest. Just admit it you don't like this girl at all. You are just going out with her to make me mad."
"Screw you okay, you have no idea what it's like to be in love with a fucking idiot! I can go out with whoever I want and you can't say anything about it because you aren't my girlfriend. So why don't you find your actual girlfriend and get off my ass!"
"Fine! But don't come crying to me when the crazy bitch shows her true colors. I was just trying to help!"
"Yeah with how you're help always turns out, I think I'll pass." Joan turned around and began to walk again.
"Says the girl with her arm in a sling!"
Joan stopped, took her arm out of the sling and used it to flip off Bex while she continued to walk home.
"Ugh!" Bex growled before stomping off towards home.
When she got home she stomped upstairs to her room, ignoring her parents complaining that she walked home when she wasn't supposed to. She flopped on her bed and grabbed a pillow before screaming into it.
Someone clearing their throat drew her attention. Bex moved the pillow and struggled to catch her breath as her eyes landed on Lyssa.
"I'm sorry for snapping at you before," Lyssa said.
Bex got off the bed and smashed her lips into Lyssa's very suddenly and very abruptly. Lyssa stumbled back but quickly kissed back.
"I don't care anymore, let's not fight," Bex said before smashing her lips against Lyssa's once more.
Lyssa wrapped her arms around Bex, and Bex pushed Lyssa against the wall with a hard thud. The kissing quickly got heated.
"Take me to your house, now," Bex ordered.
Lyssa scooped Bex up into her arms and vanished out the window. They reappeared in Lyssa's room and Lyssa threw Bex on the bed. Bex quickly grabbed the vampire by her shirt and pulled her down on top of her while kissing her.
"What's gotten into you?" Lyssa moaned as she pulled back, Bex's hand still holding tightly to her shirt.
"Nothing yet," Bex smirked.
Lyssa let out an animalist growl before ripping Bex out of her clothes. Bex closed her eyes and sighed in pleasure as she felt Lyssa sink her fangs into her skin.
Joan sat in her room and thought about what she could wear. Her stomach turned at the prospect of her first-ish date. Being as her actual first date didn't even feel like a first date because Bex just mostly ignored all her advances.
No. Joan told herself.
She wasn't going to think about Bex. Not tonight. Regardless of the fight they just got in. This was her night and she wasn't going to let Bex ruin it. She promised herself she would at least try and move on and so that's what she was going to do.
No more thoughts about Bex, after all, she had a date to get ready for.
