In my country (Belgium), it's customary for costumes to be horror themed. No princesses or dogs, but vampires and zombies! Some people break this rule, but usually people aren't going to dress up as something that isn't meant to be scary (or creepy-cute like a happy ghost). Other more varied costumes are reserved for Carnival in february. It's kind of sad to see how Halloween has been getting less and less popular though, with stores stocking up on decorations for Sinterklaas and Christmass before October even begins.
