His behavior was starting to worry me. I placed my hand on his chest to push
him back slightly. Being five foot six compared to his six foot three was odd.
Samuel put his face close to my own pulling my chin up.
“There is so much you don’t know about this world. I think you have
accomplished your job for the night Katerina. I will take you back now.”
The warmth of his breath still warmed my face. He grabbed my hand leading
me from the mansion. What the hell was that all about? On the ride back to
Gabe’s place I was silent. Did he really take that angel shit seriously? Even a
little kid knew it was all fiction. Samuel had stopped the car looking at me.
“You did a good job.”
He handed me a vanilla envelope that was my payment. Getting out of the
car I bowed to him.
“Thank you for all of this...Samuel.”
I wanted to ask him about what he’d meant but kept silent. I watched as he
drove off leaving me there. Abel ran from the house tackling me.
“You look pretty...you sure are sissy?”
Laughing I pick him up. Only he could make all my worries disappear so
easily.
Gabe walked outside to get Abel but stopped to stare at me.
“Oh my god is that really you? Seriously you clean up good girl.”
Giving him a death stare he backs away a little. I laugh again as his wife hits
him in the head.
“Leave the girl alone would you? It was probably a big ordeal to deal with
all those people.”
Thankfully tonight we were allowed to sleep here. In the morning I set out
looking for a new house. Even if it was a little run down it would be better
than no place. Abel stayed with Gabe’s wife while I was searching. After
looking all day I felt so tired. The only place that seemed reasonable was run
by a dirty old man. No way in hell would I let that be my landlord. Heading
back it was like my feet wanted to drag. Asking to stay another night was
putting Gabe out. It wasn’t that he didn’t mind us being there but I did. While
walking back there was a sign in front of a house I missed. Quickly I ran over
seeing this place was for rent. The owner had just put the sign out.
“Excuse me but what are you asking for rent?”
They turned to look at me with a raised brow. Seriously don’t give me that
look because of my age.
Bowing my head low I asked once more. The owner sighed looking at me.
“It is a thousand a month kid. Do you have that kind of money?”
His tone was annoying but it was perfect for us.
“Yes I actually do Sir. My brother and I have been looking for a new place to
live. If you don’t mind renting to me. I will be willing to pay you right this
moment.”
The man walked over taking the sign down.
“Alright kid if you have the money then so be it. You will have to pay extra
for moving in tonight.”
He was being an ass but to be honest it was fine. Getting into my jacket I pull
out the money handing it over to him. The rest was stored at Gabe’s house
for safekeeping. The man handed me the keys waving as he then walked off.
Oh my god this was so freaking amazing. On the walk back I was singing to
myself. Tonight had been a very productive night for me. Usually there
would have been more hoops to jump through. Guess the saying money talks
is the best explanation for this luck.
When I got back Abel was sleeping on the couch. Gabe’s wife was making
something for dinner. She tackled me in a hug as I gave her the good news.
Once I got the chance to sell the clothes from the party; that would be
almost another thirty grand. That amount would help make sure we got
everything for our home with money to spare. In the morning we move to
our new home. Gabe closed down the shop for the day to help me shop for
furniture. Midday we had bought enough to fill the house. Abel had already
fallen in love with the house just looking at the outside. The next few days
we spent time arranging everything. Once things settled down I enrolled him
into the school nearby. The time he missed school was hard since he already
had problems. Things looked to be going good for us the first time ever. A
few weeks have passed by so quickly since we moved. Abel was doing great in
his new school. Gabe allowed me to take some extra shifts when needed. I
was even able to sell all the stuff Samuel bought me. Seeing as Gabe gave me
the day off I planned to go shopping.
The streets were filled in the market. It was nice to have money to spend on
anything I wanted. I stopped at several places, many of them would even
deliver the goods to my house. As I walk there is a familiar face. It is Samuel
with some other men. He looked annoyed lighting a cigarette. For some
reason the smoke from it went into the shape of a skull. Okay my mind had to
be playing tricks on me.
“Katerina stop looking for trouble. Just finish the shopping then go home.
You didn’t see a skull in the smoke.”
Smacking my cheeks the pain snapped me back to reality. As I turn around I
notice something out the corner of my eyes. Was he smiling looking at me?
Okay this really was my cue to leave the market. One night of being with
gangsters was enough to last me a lifetime. Walking quickly I wanted to leave
the area. It obviously wasn’t fast enough. A group of men had me blocked in
towards the alley. Had they been with Samuel or were they rivals. It would be
my luck after being his date to get attacked. One of the men moves behind
me as another walks closer to me.
“You really are a looker even in shabby clothes. What did Samuel let you off the leash or something?”
Huh, did they think I was his pet?
Trying not to let his words anger me I stood up straight. My eyes locked onto
his own.
“Look I was only hired to be his date that night. If you got beef with Samuel
take it up with him. I’m just an ordinary person.”
The man laughed, reaching towards my hair. Just the thought of any of them
touching me was sickening. Quickly I dodged his touch to knee him in the
gut.
“Seriously you guys need to go play with someone else.”
The others didn’t take kindly to my attack on their friend. Rolling my eyes it
seemed this wasn’t going to end peacefully. One of the men grab me from
behind as the other punches my stomach hard. This wasn’t anything
compared to the beatings my own mother gave me. The men stopped staring
at me hearing my laughter.
“Really is that all you idiots can do?”
Swinging down low I sweep my leg under the man behind me. He hits hard
as I punch his throat turning to another one. Soon enough each of them
were out cold on the ground. Great they tore my new shirt, I really liked it.
Letting out a sigh I walked from the alley to see Samuel standing there.
“Well it seems that our Miss Katerina had some fun back here.”
Really you call this fun? You're an asshole which I hoped to god that you
knew.
He moved to the side letting me out of the alley. Sadly it looked like Samuel
was stalking me.
“What is it? Why are you following me?”
I turned to face him with a glare. He laughed some leaning his face close to
mine.
“You really are feisty today.”
Really that was your answer to my questions you jerk. He lifted my chin up
then I felt his lips pressed against mine. I hated to admit this was my first
kiss. His lips were soft even though he was putting much force into the kiss.
Instinctively I pushed him off slapping his face.
“What the hell is your problem? You think just because you are a gangster
you can kiss anyone you like?”
Not even waiting for a response I took off running. Was he just toying with
me for the hell of it? Dear god please don’t let Samuel actually feel attracted
to me. Samuel licked his lips while watching Katerina run away. A smile
coming to his face. He walked over to the men on the ground raising his hand
as a flame covered the men.
“Garbage doesn’t deserve to live.”
His voice was cold as lighting another cigarette from the fire.
He walks from the alley to some of his men. They laughed looking at the
charred remains.
“So what is so special about her any ways?”
Samuel looks over at the man asking the question.
“Don’t worry what is special about her. If any of you idiots try anything
then hell will be the least of your worries. She is mine.”
His eyes went from his dark brown to a blood red. It was just for a moment
but enough to scare his men. I ran till reaching the house then just sat on
the front steps. Gabe stopped at Katerina’s front gate. He could
see her just sitting there with her face planted in her knees.
“What happened?”
His voice was worried.
“It was Samuel. That damn asshole took my first kiss.”
Gabe fell to his butt laughing. I swear if Gabe didn’t stop laughing he would
go home with a few new scars.
