It was a gathering of some kind. Jennifer had no clue. She only knew Amber, who had invited her, and Steve who was going to be there. Steve, she thought sighing a little. A great dad to an adorable little girl. Jennifer thought of the two of them at the park over the weekend. She had gone for her afternoon run and ran into Steve. The father daughter duo. There was something attractive in a man nurturing his child.
Jennifer spent the rest of the day getting to know Steve and his daughter Emily. He was a single dad his wife had disappeared taking all of their savings. Jennifer fell for his sad tale and learned he took a single parent Yoga class. That's where he met Amber, Jennifer's employee. Steve was friendly offering to buy he ice cream and Jennifer entertained little Emily desperate for her own child. With her head in the clouds she had forgotten to ask the dashing father for his number. She kicked herself for the rest of the weekend.
It wasn't till Monday morning that she up next to Amber at the Mr.Moon marketing gathering to talk to Steve.
"So I heard you like yoga?" Jennifer teased. Amber was caught off guard at her attempt of friendliness.
"Yeah, I take a Single parent's class." She replied hesitant then kept going. Jennifer waited patiently for the right opportunity. It came when she began talking about Steve. The mousy brunette opened up and Jennifer was reeling her in.
"Steve" Jennifer interrupted "Where have I heard that name? Steve" She pretended to trail off and conjured the image of the caring father. "Oh, Right, I met a Steve over the weekend. We bonded over some ice cream and he mentioned a Yoga class and you." Jennifer pretended.
"Wow" Amber lit up "What a coincidence!" Jennifer had her hooked
"Really, well I was hoping to get back into Yoga and I heard from Steve that this class just changes your life." Amber chuckled uncharacteristically almost sinister. But, in an instant she returned to her bubbly self.
"Well if you say so" Jennifer was off put by the quick change. Amber's tan painted nail reached to her own. "You have to stop by sometime."
A chill swept over Jennifer. The instinct her ancestors had when they felt a predator hide around a corner. She tried shaking the feeling off. It stuck and suddenly she hesitated.
"Oh, please" Amber stuck her lip out and began pouting. A look that didn't belong to the dark haired mom. Feeling trapped, Jennifer agreed.
They set a date. Thursday. 6:00 P.M. after work they would carpool in Jennifer's car. Jennifer's life would change for the better.
The rest of the week was filled with Amber's knowing smiles and the begrudgingly sharing of something almost secretive between the two. Jennifer had to pretend her growing annoyance the the 'Yoga' mom was interest instead.
Thursday rolled around and Jennifer stood in a dark lit room with weird pictures of worms eating themselves in a circle. If she had paid attention to her Symbology class she would know that it was the Ouroborus. They weren't worms but snakes with a malicious gleam in the eye that looked out.
Amber and her were the first to arrive talking sporadically about their lives. Jennifer mentioned being single and not having much of a family. Amber constantly mentioned her daughter and son and how awful the vaccinations and how they caused autism. Jennifer stopped herself from rolling her eyes. OF course, it would make sense that the single mom would blame the vaccinations that ran through her body and bloodstream for autism. The air in the room felt cloying as if trying to mask something.
She walked the perimeter, and saw behind the tapestries with the worms white words written in both large and small font. She began to take a closer look when out of the corner of her eye. Steve walked in. Nonchalantly, she turned her attention to him and blushed as he opened his arms and walked towards her. She pretended to protest and inhaled deeply feeling his taut muscles underneath the thin athletic shirt. She let go and was already picturing a better date somewhere else.
Amber bounced forward and Jennifer watched unpleasantly. The duo babbled about their children and as Emily sounded sweet and adorable, Amber's two children sounded as irksome as their mother. Feeling forsaken, Jennifer looked around the room surveying the other class members. They were all the same. Women in different patterned yoga pants and a loose fitting tank top around a sports bra. They all seemed cookie cutter and Jennifer fit right in. Instead of standing out she seemed to disappear into the background with every other desperate mother vying for the only man in the room. She grabbed a yoga mat and placed one down in the center of the room .If she couldn't divide herself from them then she would just have to physically put herself there.
As the trend for sitting down became more evident others gathered their mats and circled around her. Cymbals signaled the entrance of the Yogi. Jennifer turned around and saw a figure in a dark robe with long trailing sleeves and a hood over their head. She pursed her lips and noticed the others bow their head almost in reverence. She shunned them instead focusing on the front of the room.
The figure moved towards the front and stood their back towards the class. Jennifer saw the same symbol as the one on the walls glaring at her. This time it's eyes were dark blood red. She had taken Yoga classes before and this whole set up screamed weird. Just behind her a few of the students stood to light even more candles.
Jennifer focused on the robed figure. A slow hum filled the studio. Starting low like flies gathering around fresh meat. She could hear Steve's deep vibrato underneath the rest. She closed her eyes and hummmmm...
"Zemete go vašeto telo kako žetva" Jennifer paused. The words foreign to her american ears. She hesitated. The phrase was repeated over and over like waves beating against her ears. She turned looking at the other students. The words poured out of their mouths as they also passed around a large glass bottle filled with black liquid. The gathering began to look more like a cult meeting.
"Zemete go vašeto telo kako žetva" the words beat against her like a drum. Pounding against her. Her hands covered her ears and she turned as the quiet whispers were now a roar of human screaming. Her brain began to overload as fear gripped her chest. She stood and turned to the exit and the people behind her stood just as quickly. They linked arms and escape seemed impossible.
"Stop it" she screamed back. She backed up and landed into the arms of the Yogi. She whipped around.
"Uroborus do you accept our offering?" Jennifer twirled and the robe had now been removed. The same symbol was tattooed on his body over and over again. Jennifer fell back and two different hands clasped either arm. The Yogi revealed a golden dagger with an encrusted ruby hilt. Jennifer fell back to the ground and saw both Steve and Amber holding onto her in a trance.
"Please" she whimpered as the Yogi kneeled above her. "Please." Steve and Amber kept chanting and suddenly stopped looking down at her. Jennifer saw the evil glee and she suddenly went limp. As the Yogi chanted above her holding his knife she watched as the two shared a passionate kiss above her.
A sharp pain erupted in her chest and she looked down. The dagger was plunged into her chest and with a shuddering last breath she fell limp. Her eyes turned to Amber and Steve and her employee leaned down with a malicious grin.
"Gotcha. Guess I'm going to be the next boss" Amber pulled back and looked around her suddenly feeling powerful. The Yogi stood up brushing himself off.
"This next quarters sales will be through the roof" Another student in the back stretched. She picked up her Mr.Moon key card. The smiling moon almost seemed to wink, all knowing.
