In this story both boys are 17. Chlodvig has been serving as a mercenary for the Roman empire for a couple of years. He is a Frank, and comes from an aristocratic, barbarian family. Theodosius is a citizen of the Roman empire. He works as a secretary to a Roman general. He comes (seemingly) from a poor, peasant family from eastern Anatolia.
