Silence hung thick in the air, begging to be broken, but as we sat in a small circle a few feet away from the unconscious woman, our thoughts seemed loud enough to obliterate that silence. Suddenly, Rev's grunt tore through the anxious atmosphere. "Well, anyone got any ideas?"
I shrugged, "We either have some rogue Guardians, or a traitor in the seven, right?"
Adrian nodded, "But how do we weed them out? It could be anyone. Might even be someone in this room." He pointedly glared at me, and I flushed, looking down.
Kianna rolled her eyes, "Keep that up and your eyes will bug out." Adrian turned away in spite, and I shot her a look of gratitude. She winked back. "I knew the traitor couldn't be anyone here, or I wouldn't have come to you guys in the first place. Livia and Zach are another story."
"Of course. Pride and Envy. Who else would be suspects?" Adrian cut in, the gaze in his eyes distant.
Rev nodded, "They always have been distant towards their positions. They haven't let go of... the incident." His eyes flick over to me subconsciously, but I pretended not to notice. Everyone's been skeptical of me since that week, but I'd never gained enough courage to ask why. Rev notices my discomfort and takes my hand in his to convey his care for me. I smile genuinely at him, appreciative of his friendship.
"Of course," I say quietly, gesturing to the lady, "she could always be a new recruit for the Guardians or something." They shrug, but I know no one believes it. The guardians would never choose someone who's reached that woman's age. "Okay maybe not," I admit, "but what are we supposed to do? Find everyone else?"
"That's exactly what we need to do," Adrian nods in thought. "Livia's pretty obvious about her whereabouts, so the real challenge would be how to find Zach."
"Shouldn't be too hard," Kianna smirks, her dark green eyes shining, "just look for the highest concentration of women, and he should be in the middle of them." Me and Rev chuckle. She's exactly right. Zach is the biggest player of all 7 continents. If there's any way to find him, it's through the female population.
"So I guess we'll have to ask the Guardians, too?" I wonder out loud. "How's that going to work?"
This time it's Adrian's turn to smirk, flipping his golden hair out of his dark blue eyes with a flick of his head. "I can take care of that. I've got connections."
Kianna raises her eyebrows in amazement, "Mr. Sloth socializes?"
He rolls his eyes, "Just because my sin is sloth doesn't mean I am slothful."
"I'm pretty sure that's exactly what it means.
"Then what does your sin say about you, Ms. Greed?"
Kianna sticks her tongue out in response.
"Very mature," Adrian mumbles, his eyebrows furrowing. I laugh, and he startles, "What're you laughing about?"
Rev cuts us off, the right side of his mouth twisting upwards slightly, "Alright, kids, time to start planning."
"I'll find my source, and you guys find the other two sins and question them." Adrian stands up, walking towards the door, ready to leave.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on, buddy. How do we know when you've got information?" Kianna questions.
"You know how to contact me," He answers, briskly walking outside. Before the door closes behind him, I glimpse as he teleports, watching as his body almost completely disintegrates. It weirds me out every time.
"I wonder if it hurts," I mumble, mostly to myself. Kianna and Rev give me weird looks but don't question anything.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, familiar footsteps pad across the porch and the doorknob begins to jiggle. I can hear some sort of object being pushed into the lock. Someone's trying to pick the lock. We all go silent, tensing up. Rev slowly stands up, inching towards the door, fists clenched. 'Careful,' I mouth to him, readying myself for anything. My heart pounds, blood pulsing through my fingers. I hear a click in the doorknob and hold my breath, frozen. He found us. The door slams open and Rev roars, tackling the intruder from the side. The figure yelps, and I hear the crackling of bones... no, not bones. Grocery bags. From the grocery store. DAMIEN. I jump up, tearing towards Rev. "REV, STOP! STOP, IT'S DAMIEN!" I jump into the mass of hands and feet and tear them apart. "IT'S DAMIEN, REV!" Rev gasps and pulls back, his eyes wide. Sure enough, Damien was there, laying on the ground in a heap of smashed grocery bags. Once Rev examines the scene, he explodes in laughter.
"Yo, dude! What the heck??" Damien yells, kicking his leg. Rev can't even respond through his giggles. "What were you thinking you dumb-" Suddenly his eyes find Kianna and they grow to the size of baseballs. He stands up almost mechanically and walks backwards outside, slamming the door in his own face. I turn quizzically towards Kianna. So does Rev. She shrugs guiltily.
Rev sighs, "What'd you do now?"
Kianna pouts innocently, "I didn't do anything. He started it." Rev groans and we meet eye contact.
"I'll go talk to Damien," Rev walks outside, not saying anything specifically to me, but I know it's now up to me to talk to Kianna.
I turn towards her and her cheeks redden. "Come on," I urge, "tell me what's up."
Apparently she was eager to spill the tea because as soon as I finish my sentence, she's gushing out words faster than I can comprehend. "Ok, so, like a year ago, we were a thing --we didn't do anything weird!- we just kinda flirted and then out of nowhere we started hanging out and doing stuff couples do and one day I just kind of blurted out, 'You realize we can't be a thing right?' in something that may have been a cold tone and he got really embarrassed, and then he tried to cover it up and sound cool and he was like, 'Can't we just have some fun?' He tried to sound husky, Sev! Can you believe that? Husky!"
"Kia! Girl. Get to the point," I laugh.
"Yeah. Anyways, I totally called him out, and kinda left before it got awkward."
I smack her arm, "Kianna!"
"What? I didn't think it'd still be bothering him."
I rolled my eyes, "You guys need a serious heart-to-heart later so you can apologize."
"Apologize? For what? You know sins can't be together."
She gives me a pointed look I don't understand, and I shrug, about to respond, when the door creaks open again. Rev and Damien walk in, mumbling about groceries and such. "C'mon people. We don't have time for some mushy feelings, we have to do something about our situation." I glare at Kianna for being so short, but she won't meet my eyes.
"You're right," Damien agrees, surprising both me and Kianna, "Rev filled me in, and I think I know exactly what to do."
"And what's that?" I question.
"Bait those two suckers to us."
"Genius plan, Sherlock. With what?"
His gaze carries right directly to my face. He speaks carefully but determined, "you."
