The two continued to bicker and argue until Bex finished her soup. When Bex was done she turned her attention back to them.
"You're just mad because she doesn't want to be a blood-sucking parasite like you!"
"I will rip your throat out if you keep testing me."
"Oh, I'm so scared."
Bex sighed and grabbed the pad of paper before using it to smack Joan in the back of the head.
"Ow, hey." Joan turned to her.
Bex crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow.
"She started it," Joan grumbled.
Bex looked to Lyssa.
"Whatever," Lyssa grumbled.
Bex held her hands out to Lyssa like a child begging to be picked up. Lyssa quickly scooped her up, Bex hissed in pain and slapped Lyssa on her arm for being so rough.
"Come to my room..." Bex forced out to Joan.
"You're room?" Joan said, but before Bex could elaborate Lyssa vanished with her speed. Purposely leaving Joan confused.
Joan sighed and began to walk upstairs where she had seen Lyssa vanish too. She walked towards a room she was faintly familiar with, her legs carrying her to the room with the balcony. The room her father had used to sneak into Lyssa's house, the day he died.
She took a steady breath and pushed the door open. The room was vastly different from what she had seen last time, hardly recognizable. Her eyes scanned the room before landing on Bex and Lyssa.
Lyssa was laying Bex down carefully, moving the pillows to better accommodate her. Joan watched as Lyssa doted on Bex, pushing Bex's hair out of her face and staring at her as if they were the only two people on the planet.
Joan watched as Bex smiled up at Lyssa. Once again the two were having a silent conversation, one she would never hear. They could be declaring their love for each other for all she knew. That thought didn't sit well with her.
She quickly walked into the room and over to the bed. Lyssa bent down and kissed Bex on the forehead before taking a step back. Joan watched as Bex's eyes lingered on Lyssa before finally shifting to Joan.
Joan had a sad puppy dog look on her face, it was clear she was miserable. Bex smiled at her and outstretched her arms towards Joan. Joan smiled and moved to lay next to Bex.
Lyssa glared at her.
Bex gave Lyssa a look, saying something through their bond. Whatever it was caused Lyssa to clench her jaw and walk away, giving the two a moment. Lyssa left the room, but left the door open and lingered by the doorway, watching from a distance.
"I'm sick," Bex sniffled and smiled at Joan who was now cuddled up next to her.
"I think you being sick is the least of your worries." Joan giggled.
"Sorry about yesterday, things were just so, overwhelming," Bex whispered.
"As long as you are okay, that's all that matters."
"I don't know if my current state qualifies as okay," Bex laughed before wincing in pain and stopping short.
Joan leaned in to kiss her, but Bex pulled away just before their lips touched.
Joan sighed and rested her head on Bex's shoulder.
"Not here, it's not fair to her," Bex said.
There was a long moment of silence.
"Can I stay here with you, or is she going to kick me out?" Joan asked.
"She'll kick you out later, but you can stay a few hours. I asked her."
Joan glared at nothing in particular.
"Remember when we were little and we would always get sick at the same time," Bex said.
"Yeah, my mom would watch us while your parents were at work. She would make a safety zone because every time you sneezed you would fall over." Joan laughed.
Bex giggled but winced in pain.
"Remember when I broke your brother's science fair project."
"Oh my god, he was so pissed. He didn't shut up about it for weeks. Remember when you tried to hide that you were sick and threw up in my sock drawer."
"Ugh, don't remind me of that. That's embarrassing."
Joan laughed.
"My mom had to disinfect the entire house and buy me all new socks."
"I really wanted to go to field day at school and I couldn't go if I was sick." Bex defended herself.
"You are so ridiculous." Joan laughed.
Lyssa watched as they whispered together and laughed and cuddled. The longer she watched the harder it was for her not to break them apart. Tears filled her eyes. It was clear to her that Bex and Joan had a bond, a life long bond, maybe a bond even stronger than the bond she shared with Lyssa.
More than anything she wanted to kill Joan. Just so Bex would have no choice but to love her and no one else. It was a selfish thought, but for some reason, she didn't care. Her eyes flashed red and she held her head which suddenly hurt.
Her eyes jumped back and forth between red and green, before settling back to green.
Maybe Lyssa's doppelganger problem wasn't as resolved as she would hope.
