In my first year at film school I created a physical object that could be interacted with. I decided to decorate a doll house with a variety of symbols, trinkets and self-made items. I still have fond memories of working on that house, with bad horror movies and new wave music in the background, late at night.
Throughout the house I hid hints leading to the location of a little key - this key opened a real miniature locker on the door between the bedroom and the 'Cage room'. Inside of the cage lay a message by the escapee. You'll find it somewhere in WS.
At that time I did not have a clear idea of who this escapee was. All I knew was that the house was inhabited by a lone huntsman. This was an early version of Ashley that did not have much background or personality. Later I realized that not only was this quite clichee-tastic, it didn't do his character justice. He was not that withdrawn, quiet backwoods weirdo. Once I let go of that stereotype, his real personality showed itself pretty quickly.
After the project had been finished, the doll house was stored inside my parent's shed, catching dust for several years, occasionally serving as Tutu's resting place when she didn't want to be disturbed. Dear feline Tutu even lived with me for several months. Then she moved back to the east. Later, my stepfather moved out and took her with him. They keep each other good company and for that I am happy.
I haven't seen my mother for about 9 months now, save for one forced visit. She no longer wishes to see me, yet proposed to go through my possessions stored at her house one last time, together. I'd want to retrieve her from that place before I lose her more than all the paintings and stuff and whatnot that's hiding in the shed and the attic. Thinking about her puts a heavy weight on me, something almost physical. And I wonder if the doll house is still in that shed, or whether she's thrown it away already. I told her I no longer needed it.
