Now I understand! "Out there" is a metaphor for the real world, where exam scores are meaningless.
"Out there" refers to the fray of society, where it's commonplace for a dog to eat the next dog. This university stuff, despite its objective educational value, is leaving me grossly unprepared for what's to come. I must study for my finals because it's the last victory I'll probably ever have.
