Lulling

Lulling

Mar 29, 2020

Verena stood in the doorway, looking all but pleased. Her brows furrowed in anger, though the sleepiness clung to her face, making her look almost cute.

Mrs. Miller nodded, looking from her to me, clearly not picking up on Verena’s attitude. “You guys just seemed like such good friends right away!”

I scoffed. Us? Friends? I’d rather scrape the gum off the bottom of the bathroom sinks at school and chew it then be friends with that girl.

She rolled her eyes, probably feeling the same about me even though I was clearly nicer.

“Whatever. Where’s my bed?” she asked, looking at the singular blue bed backed up in the corner.

“You’re looking at it, love,” Mrs. Miller said, “You girls will have to share.”

Verena’s words were sharp and sour, though they were masked by a milky sweetness, obviously practiced and fake, though Mrs. Miller didn’t seem to pick up on it.

“Oh, of course! Nothing I love more than sharing with people I adore.” she smiled as Mrs. Miller left the room.

Verena shut the door behind her, and glared at me, before going into the bathroom to see what they had. I followed her since she left the door open. She was putting on some lotion on her face and arms as I walked in, leaning against the doorway.

“So uh, this is weird,” I said, trying to smile.

She huffed, getting up and brushing past me. Another wave of strawberry rushed past me, and I turned to watch her as she went. She opened the closet and looked through it. I got a glance and noticed some clothes were in there. Not ours, but definitely not bad-looking. She then shut it and sat on the bed delicately, shooting me another glare.

“Mrs. Samuels, I don’t want to talk to you. It’s one in the morning, I was woken up by some fool who called herself Minnow or something of the sort, and taken to a distastefully white waiting room. I was then forced to be housed with some unmannered pig. I’d rather be in my father’s house, in my room, asleep, but my father doesn’t know I exist anymore, and I’m stuck here. So if you would stop trying to make friends with me, it would be appreciated.” She huffed, before laying down and climbing under the covers on the right side, pushing herself as close to the wall as she could.

I sighed and went to wash up and explore a bit.

Well jeez she could have at least been nicer about it. I’m not a pig, I’m just more comfortable with getting my feet wet.

After I was done I went and climbed into the left side, sitting up with my legs under the covers. I looked over at her. She looks peaceful asleep, almost calm. Her breath was slow and soft, almost rhythmic. I found myself lulled by it, and I started to lean towards her a bit, before I realized what I was doing with a jolt of shock. I quickly sat back up, slipping under the covers and facing away from her.

What was that?! She’s just an entitled ballerina. No, I shouldn’t compare her to those poor ballerinas. She’s… a prim princess? Ugh I should just sleep. She’s not a good person Alex, no matter if she’s going to help you save the world or some shit. She’s probably never gotten dirty in her life.

I shook my head quickly, before sighing and shutting my eyes. The only noise I heard in the background was her soft breathing, like a lullaby, pulling me into sleep.
