It's a Hybrid Fusion Crystal, that powered the inter-dimensional resonators which control the Flux-generators. These are necessary to increase the flow of ionized plasma to the EM-X drives, so they can warp space-time to achieve super-luminal speeds, so an alien traveller can traverse the expanding fabric of space-time in a timely fashion.
