Hunter

A Lucky break?

A Lucky break?

Apr 07, 2020

Pg. 1.

With a grunt I pulled my heavy sword from the freshly slain, giant boar.

Who could blame me? After two weeks of traveling through swamps and strange woods looking for shelter, I finally happened upon a village in the lower part of some mountains by the sea. They offered me free stay with meals if I could kill this beast that had been ravaging their crops for the past month. And boy was I in need of a break.

I’m a tired twenty-five year old who feels like he is about forty. Messy brown hair that was much too long and in desperate need of cleaning. Green eyes that could hardly stay open from exhaustion. Outdated light armor that was so scratched it hardly showed any reflections anymore. Even my poor red shoulder cape was a deep muddy brown from lack of care.

I stood near the boar's rugged body, its shoulder coming up to the tip of my nose. Its brown fur stained with blood and scars from current and past battles. This thing must have been at least a hundred years old. With a brief pause and a heavy sigh, I wiped my brow with my rugged sleeve. I'm just glad this hunt was over. It took me two days to find it.

I readied my blade above my head. I could feel my arm and back muscles straining from the weight of my blade. My body is really at its limit. With a heavy swing, I dropped it down. Making a thick clean cut. With a heavy thud the boar's head fell to the grass. This was the only proof of kill I could bring back. Though I could bring a foot but… what's the fun in that. I felt myself smirk at my own thought.

I rested my blade tip into the grass as I pondered on whether I could hack up some pieces to eat before my days travel back. It was a beautiful evening and making camp here seemed decent and quiet.

“ Oh, Maybe I can get them to come and help me load the body on a wagon before nightfall.” I said, thinking out loud, tapping my chin.

Before that, I needed to drain all the blood from the head so I didn't make a mess on me or my horse so I wrapped a rope around a tusk and tossed the empty end over a nearby sturdy branch.

I pulled two long strokes and the head dangled just in eye sight. I tied the loose end to another branch and waited.

It had been a while that I could just stop and sit. I looked around me at the wildlife and nature as it slowly washed by with the winds.

Many different species roamed around. Seemingly unbothered by me. Some even came up to the carcass of the boar and seemed relieved it was dead.
