The Visitor felt an eerie sense of foreboding as they flipped through the last page of the book. Like said before it hadn't been long at all, in fact, it hadn't taken much more than a few minutes to read through in its entirety. Though for some reasons these words struck a bit of a chord.
It wasn't the story itself, The Visitor supposed, but perhaps the way that The Librarian had advertised the book. Something close to home, and how right he had been. Was the man playing with them, taking jabs and shots in the dark? Or was there something more behind the subtle glint of his glasses in the dim reading light of the library and the awkward grin plastered to his face.
"You don't know me," The Visitor actually hadn't meant to say it like that in such an accusatory tone, but it had come out that way and now they were rolling with it.
"I don't? Well what would you say to me if i said that I did?" he said in a light and airy tone that made it hard to tell if he was teasing or not. The Visitor chose to believe the former.
"I would call you a fool," they spat, "No one knows me. Especially not you."
The Librarian held up his hands in defense, "A touchy subject I see, but I meant no harm. Merely trying out certain sentences to test their ominous ring in real life rather than on paper. I must say I do enjoy it," his voice rang out in a chuckle.
"Buzz off... what time is it anyways?" they asked in response. They couldn't stick here too long. It was too risky, they went to look at their watch, but The Librarian spoke up abruptly:
"Its only been a few minutes, after all these are all short accounts, I promise I wouldn't keep you with anything too dreadfully long. So why not stay another chapter? No harm in that I think, especially not when you're enjoying yourself so," The Librarian smiled at them with a grin that reminded them of something between a warm coffee and the soft turn of a book's page, an indescribable feeling, completely different than the vibe that he had put off before.
The Visitor felt a bit more relaxed than before; their jaw unclenched, their shoulders sagged a bit. Perhaps they had been a bit snappy before, another story couldn't hurt right? Especially when they were enjoying theirself this much.
"I think you'll like this next story very much. It reminds me of a home much like my own had been. While a tragic tale, and haunting to boot, I think it has a strong message nonetheless," The Librarian explained, and the Visitor found that they were more than ready to listen.
It had even slipped their mind that all the stories before had been tragedies as well.
