For a school for troubled youth, it was remarkably clean. The school was easily four stories and was structured like a giant glass dome even the football field was within the dome's barrier. Looking farther inward I could even see two large separate fields leading down a hill a little ways past the football stadium, There was even a large building labeled personal fitness center right next to the dome with a large greenhouse all the way on the far right of the building.
All in all… this did not look like a school for troubled youth.
“Ok why is our school the size of a college campus?” I ask in disbelief.
“I know we said the same thing when we came for the open house. Apparently it's a prototype for how all schools in the district are gonna look in the future” Alvin yawned “Honestly I think it's wasted on a bunch of delinquents like us.
“Yeah no kidding by the way” Alexis suddenly pointed her finger at me “Well walk you to the front office since we have no idea where to go either”
After getting off the bus we were flooded by a wave of harsh elbows and even harsher words as we maneuvered through the sea of students into the school. Once inside a young woman was directing all new students to head into the front office to her left. Since Alvin and Alexis already knew where to go they both grabbed me by my shoulders and pushed me out of the way before i coul;d get trampled.Once inside I saw a different cluster of students from freshman to seniors waiting for further instructions.
Eventually another young woman who looked almost identical to the other young women came out from the back room with a stack of papers.
“Good morning students! Please form an orderly line to receive your class schedules!” Her smile was sickeningly sweet but her voice was so monotone as she yelled so it was hard to tell if she was enthusiastic or just bored.
Even more unsettling is just how identical this lady was to the other one still outside, not just in clothes but even there facial features.Even their eyes were the same pale gray which was enough to make me extremely uncomfortable. Once she handed me my schedule I quickly walked out of the room and waited in the hallway for Alvin and Alexis to come out of the room. I took the time to look at my schedule and was confused as to why I only had one thing on my schedule for the entire day: Special Ed.
I looked on in confusion as to why I only had one thing scheduled for my entire semester and once Alexis and Alvin walked out to join me they seemed just as confused as I was.
“Is this the schools funny way of saying were dumb or something?”Alexis asked in annoyance as we walked down the hall to the room we were supposed to go to for homeroom. “They’ll probably explain that once we get to the room I hope this is just a mistake though. What do you think Jaden?” Alvin asked me as we walked up the stairs to the second floor of the dome and continued down the large hallway.
“ I think this schedule is completely stupid but lets just go ahead and get through this day so we can hurry up and go home”. I sigh as we turn left down into a hallway and sto at the dorm of our homeroom.Once we opened the door we saw we were the last three to enter the room so we hurried to the back to take the last three seats. We still had 10 minutes before our class and our instructor wasn't in the room so I sat back and waited while Alvin sent me funny memes on his phone and Alexis began to drum against her desk.
We had about five minutes left of free time when someone to the left of me tapped my shoulder. “Welp it's always nice to see new faces at the bottom of the barrel”. A tall, light skinned guy chuckled as he leaned back into his seat.
“What do you mean by that?” I asked
“Well with the way things work around here your only in this class if your the least threatening kids here which is why were at the bottom of the barrel” The kid said after shaking my hand “ I’m Tariq by the way, and the two people sitting in front of you are Darold and Satoya some of the best people you’ll meet at this school”.
He motioned to the broad shouldered guy and curvy girl sitting in front of me who both turned around to say hi while Alvin, Alexis and I introduced ourselves.
“So I take it this isn't your first year here if you already know how things work” Alvin said as our man, who I could only assume was our teacher, walked into the room and sat at the teacher's desk.
“Yup” Darold replied while peeling an orange and handing half of it to Satoya “ Were all seniors they keep you in this class because we're the least intimidating ones here so they're trying to keep the other students from beating us up all the time”.
“Which is honestly stupid since being special ed immediately puts a target on your back”. Satoya added as our teacher began instructing the class.
Once I looked up I realized that even the teacher, despite being male, held a very similar appearance to the other two women from before, even his clothes matched their color scheme, but i decided to put that out of my mind for now.
“So if special ed is for the least intimidating what did you guys do to be considered troubled youth?” I whispered to the others while the teachers attention was diverted
“ I kept getting into fights in school which wouldn't have been so bad if I didn't keep breaking their bones”. Tariq pondered while I could visibly see Alexis clamp down on her tongue so that she wouldn't start laughing.
“I hacked into my old school's news channel so everyone could see inside the teachers lounge… they do some very dirty things in there.”Darold said with a smirk while Alvin put his hands over his mouth after he almost squealed from laughter.
“I’m not saying mine” Satoya said matter of factly while crossing her her arms matter of factly
“Oh come on Sa toy-toy we said ours”. Tariq begged
“I don't care, I'm not saying it”.
“I'll be your best friend?”
“Tariq we already are best friends.”
“I’ll hack into the school system and change your grades?” Darold offered
“Tempting but no.”
Tariq sighed in defeat before gasping with a smirk and leaned forward to whisper in her ear.I’m not sure what he said but once her eyes went wide and her face turned red I had a pretty good idea of what he told her.
“Ok fine I’ll tell you just promise not to laugh or i’ll kick you all in the balls.”
“I don't have those so that threat is meaningless but I promise.” Alexis chimed in causing me to chuckle as I promised.
“ Ok so one thing you need to know about me now is that I'm very territorial of my food” She began “ So one day when my aunt took a piece of chicken off my plate…. I stabbed her with a chicken bone.”
Needless to say we all quickly broke our promise as we all began bursting as she finished her story, and even she couldn't help but laugh at herself as the story was pretty funny.
Unfortunately our laughter was short lived.
“Alright that's enough!” the teacher bellowed while glaring at the six of us.
So much for staying out of trouble.
