It turned out that Wild already had a lot of experience with a bow and arrows, although his mind didn’t remember it. On muscle memory alone, he was amazing at it. Thalia was also skilled with her weapon, she was also very strong.
My body was so swore from all the exercise he made us do. Hours upon hours of running and sit ups with no water was hard. My feet dragged as Joker led us to another room. This room, I realised, was the shower room.
There were about ten showers with only half walls dividing them. Joker stood outside as we showered. It was very awkward considering we were two boys and a girl. Thalia made us close our eyes and turn our backs to her.
I wrapped myself in a towel as Joker came back in. “Cover yourselves.” He grabbed all our clothes and threw them into a hole in the wall.
“Seriously? We’re back to this again?” Thalia growled as we followed Joker out of the room and down the hallway. People watched us as we walked through the hall.
Thalia flashed her knife at a bald man who’s eyes were not where they should have been and he fled.
We ended up in a dimly lit room full of clothes, all black with the occasional white shirt. Joker left us in there, locking the door from the outside. Thalia flipped a switch and more lights turned on, illuminating the room until it was too bright.
Thalia knew her way around. She quickly picked up clothes and stood behind one to the shelves to get dressed.
I found some jeans and a white shirt and got changed. Wild wore jeans and a long sleeved white button up shirt. I found a black utility jacket and put it on.
Thalia came out wearing shorts and an oversized camouflage shirt with her knife attached to her thigh.
“Where did you find colour in here?” I asked, referring to all the black.
“I know where to look. Oh, just so you know, if you ever want to kept a jacket or shoes or something, kept them in the cell. They don’t let you kept clothes in here for some reason.”
“You could have told us that before. I lost my Nikes.” Wild whined.
“No you didn’t.” I smiled as I handed him his shoes. “I took our shoes before he saw them.” I started putting my converses on.
“Thanks, I didn’t even see you do that.” He smiled back.
“The guard’s on break, he’s not coming back for at least half an hour. So, how old are you guys?” Thalia asked as she sat on the ground, ripping up an ugly leopard print shirt.
“17.” I told her as Wild and I sat. “You?”
“19.”
“Did you go to the school?” Wild asked her as he drew patterns in the layer of dirt that covered the floor.
“Yeah, most people do. There’s people who have been here for twenty years, don’t go near them.” She advised. “So, little brother. Have you got any memories back yet?”
Being called little brother was strange to me. It would take some time to get used to having a sister. “Your memories come back?”
“Yeah. I got most of mine, I remember my mum now. I remember where I lived.” She sighed, “It’s no use having those memories though, all it does is give me something to be sad about. What about you red head?”
“I remember my dad. I remember that we lived in Melbourne when I was little.” He frowned.
“Okay… new topic. You got girlfriends?” Thalia tapped her fingers together, abandoning the shirt that now looked like it had been torn up by a wild animal.
“Not anymore. Cerise and I broke it off before I graduated. I was with her for nearly two years.” Wild said.
“It was serious then?”
“No, we barely talked this year and she was spending a lot of time with one of the boys from the other cohorts.”
“My ex-boyfriend was a cheater too. He also wasn’t good at staying alive, he was one of the first to die down here out of my year. What about you?” Thalia turned her eyes towards me.
“No one.” I said, feeling awkward that I didn’t have a relationship story.
“What about first kisses?” she asked. When we both blushed she got embarrassed, “Sorry, I’ve had no one to talk to for two years, I’m getting it all out of my system.”
“I’m pretty sure it was with Cerise, unless there was someone before I lost my memory.”
“This girl named Arihart kissed me as a dare at a party. I’m fairly sure that was my first kiss.” I said, recalling the night the whole cohort had come to the boys dorm and partied in the rec room.
An hour later, Joker came back and took us to what looked like a cafeteria.
“Keep your eyes out. Your fresh meat. Flash your knifes at anyone who comes close.” She said. She had given us knives she found in the room of clothes.
We grabbed food, then sat at an empty table. I started eating, I was starving.
A few minutes later, a tray was placed on the other side of the table and someone sat down. I looked up to find a familiar face.
“Daniel?” Wild stared at him wide eyed.
“Yeah, it’s me.” His hair was blue now, fading slowly to black.
“Do you know where Zoe is?” I asked him.
“No, but i'm sure she's fine.” He said. Daniel had never liked Zoe so he didn't seem overly concerned about her whereabouts.
“Didn’t see you guys at training. They said everyone trains together.” He shoved his food in his mouth, it was not pretty.
“We don’t train with you.” Thalia told him.
“Who’s this?”
“Thalia, my sister.” I introduced him.
“Half-sister.” She corrected.
“How’d you find that out?”
“Joker.” I said before realising that that wasn’t his name. “This guy who takes us places.”
“You call him Joker?” Wild asked.
“Yeah, he’s crazy.”
“I’m stuck in a cell with two suck ups from another cohort. All they did last night was complain about being locked in a cell. They weren’t even bothered by the fact that they had just killed people.” Daniel said as he looked down at his now empty plate, looking as if he wished he hadn’t eaten so quickly.
