The first semester was going by to fast for my liking.Luckily my mother never found out that I snuck out since my sister had snuck some nyquil into her drink rendering her asleep for the entire night, and since she thought I was home the entire, I didn't get blamed for the ‘mysterious forest fire’ that was all over the new. However things unfortunately we're not over between me and the Terrans.
Since the party incident I’ve been seeing the Terrans practically everywhere. For a group that supposedly stays on the fourth floor, they’ve been stopping me at almost every turn. What makes it all so weird is that they’re not even being mean. In fact every last one of them has had nothing but nice things to say, and even though I knew they were all following Jameson’s orders that didn't stop it from being creepy in the slightest.
I haven't been the only one that they’ve stopped either.
Alvin,Mariah , and the others have all been stopped at one point or another by the Terrans which left me even more nervous then when they were just approaching me.
The fact that even my friends were getting stopped definitely made it clear that all my friends have powers too. I doubt Jameson would ask them to play nice with people that had nothing to offer him whether they were my friends or not, and the fact that I know Alvin has powers himself only solidifies my theory.
I still can't get over the fact that Alvin has powers either, or the fact that all of my friends may have powers.
I obviously haven't talked to any of them about it yet aside from Alvin. I hid my powers for years because I had no one to trust, and then the only reason Mariah and Alvin know now is because I had no choice. The experience did bring the three of us a lot closer together since they both promised not to tell anyone, but I just thought it was best not to get the others involved until the time was right.Besides I have no way of proving my theory about them having powers unless I reveal my own and if I end up being wrong that could cause a lot of problems with few solutions so as of right now it's best I keep my mouth shut.
Today was a very important day since it was the first pep - rally of October celebrating the winter sports, the homecoming game and dance, as well as the achievements of the Terrans, but that's not why I care about today.
Today was also Mariah's 18th birthday and to celebrate we were all celebrating by going to the mall for a shopping spree, and considering how stressed out I've been over the Terrans it'll be nice to just do something normal.
All i have to do is make it through this stupid pep rally.
After our homeroom period was over our teacher instructed us to head straight to the gym with our bags since we would apparently be there all day.Alexis, the others and I were walking out of class while Alvin ran straight to the bathroom and told us he'd meet us at the auditorium.
Since Mariah was the only one not in the same special ed class as we were I sent her a text saying to wait by the entrance.
Once I looked back up from my phone again I saw that Satoya and Alexis were both smirking at me.
“What?” I ask with a chuckle.
“Oh nothing..”Satoya began. “We were just wondering what you planned on wearing to the coming dance?”
“Why would I be going to that?” I asked
“Why wouldn't you?” Darold as we walk down the stairs to the first floor. “The school functions can actually be pretty fun y’know.
While I wanted to disagree, Darold wasn't wrong just last week we had a bring your pet to school day, and I got to watch Alvin get chased down the hallway by a goat. Why someone has a goat I will never know, but it was still pretty funny to watch.
But considering the last party I went to I learned that I caught the attention of more than half the school. I didnt wanna risk something even worse happening.
“Besides Alvin said that he's going.”Tariq replied as he texted Satoya something that made her blush and call him a dirty bastard with a laugh.
Upon hearing that Alvin was gonna go,I couldn't lie, I was suddenly very interested in the dance.
Hopefully nothing bad will happen.
Alvin eventually caught up to us as we made it to the auditorium entrance where Mariah waved us over.Satoya ran over and gave her a hug wishing her a happy birthday while a teacher ordered us to hurry inside.
The auditorium was big enough to house the entire student body, and since the special ed students were the last ones to show up it was hard to find a seat for all of us to sit together. A nearby teacher ultimately decided to split us off into pairs of two with one extra person to go wherever. Satoya and Alvin ended up sitting front and center while Mariah and Alexis sat on the far right in the middle of the auditorium.
Tariq, Darold and I ended up sitting in the back on the far left as lights came on over the stage. Since I knew that this pep rally was gonna be unnecessarily long I pulled out my phone since Darold challenged our group chat to Uno. After playing over 30 games I looked up to see the teacher was still talking about winter sports, nor were any of the teams even on stage.
I rolled my eyes as I checked my phone and saw it was only 10:15 while Tariq groaned loudly.
“Ugh! Is this guy ever gonna shut up?”
“Probably not.” Darold chuckled as he typed away at his computer. “The only part of this conversation I care about is homecoming.”
“Why is homecoming such a big deal anyway?” I ask
“Well aside from the actual dancing part no one else really cares about homecoming. The main reason everyone wants to go is because it gives you a chance to shoot your shot with someone.”
“You mean like Tariq and Satoya?”
Tariqs head turned in my direction so fast I thought his neck was gonna snap, but watching his face turn bright red was very satisfying.
“Well for your information Satoya and I have not put a label on what we are yet-”
“So you're hoping the dance next week will change that?” Darold chimed in as the teacher finally began discussing topics on homecoming.
“I have it all planned out. I just have to ask her today when we go to the mall.”
“If you don't chicken out first.” I chuckle as Tariq shot me a death glare.
“Says the guy that has two options of who to go to the dance with.”
I fell silent while darold couldn't contain his laughter as Tariq smirked Triumphantly. Before I could reply to his statement, the teacher announced the award ceremony for the Terrans as Mr. Jameson walked onto the stage. Instantly the entire room got silent as Jamesons eyes scanned the room until he landed on me.
He was starting to make me nervous until I gotta text from my phone prompting me to look away.
Alvin had sent me a text asking if i was alright along with sending a picture of himself giving me a thumbs up.
My mood improved quickly while Darold looked over at my phone and started to laugh.
“Looks like you already made your choice.”
I chose not to respond as I looked up to see that Gianna,Tristan and the remaining Terrans that were at that campfire had all received medals for whatever contributions they had made to the school.
The remaining Terransnot on stage clapped furiously for their peers and I couldn't tell if they were actually happy for them or just too scared to find out what happens if they didn't show support.
When I looked down at my phone, the time read 1:50 meaning we had 20 minutes before school was over. I couldn't wait to just get out of there and hang with my friends for the rest of the day, but what i wasnt counting on was Jameson making a move on us in the auditorium.
As students were being released by row, Jameson asked that anyone in the special ed classes stay behind.
Soon enough the only people left were me, my friends, and the rest of the students we share a class with, but eventually as Jameson called names to leave the only people left were my friends, the other seven kids from Mariah's special ed class and the top ten Terrans who stood behind Jameson in eager anticipation.
I was completely tempted to just get up and leave especially as my phone continued to vibrate from my friends all wondering what was going on. After ten long seconds Jamesons voice boomed in the auditorium.
“CONGRADULATIONS!”He bellowed. “You all have been chosen for the extremely great honor of joining your fellow peers in the Terran program!”Not a single person in the room clapped as many in the room were confused. However Jameson didn't let the lack of applause stop him as he continued to speak.
“As many can attest this privilege is not one that is easily earned! I have chosen you all as you have all exhibited.. Special behavior just like the many Terrans before you, but rest assured I know with hard work and dedication I know you will all do great things and may even one day surpass one of the ten students on this stage.” He gestured to the top ten behind him, none of whom looked pleased with that statement. “So… what do you say?”
Jameson waited for a response that never came as we all looked around the room stunned. ‘Is this dude for real?’ Darold text the group chat to receive no answer as none of us were sure what to do. It seemed everyone was waiting for someone to make the first move, and it seemed that Jameson was waiting as well as the man's smile didn't falter from his face.
Eventually one of the kids from Mariah's class let out a loud scoff in disbelief before getting up and walking towards the door to leave.
However just as she reached the door handle, Kevin shot out a strong bolt of electricity almost nailing her in the back of the head.
The only reason he missed is because Alvin had gotten out of his own way and ran to catch her just in time. Jameson suddenly had everyone's attention except no one in the room seemed surprised that someone just shot electricity from their finger tips. Instead everyone looked either anxious, scared or surprised beyond belief, emotions that were all to familiar since they were the same emotions I had the night I discovered I wasn't alone.Tariq shrank down in his chair trying to avoid being the next target ,Satoya had to hold back Alexis who was trying to tackle Kevin for attacking a student meanwhile Darold had gotten up and placed himself in front of Mariah who looked too terrified to move.
The smile on Jameson's face had been replaced with a completely monotone look while his eyes glared at me in fierce intensity.
“I apologize..” He began. “ It seems I left you all under the impression that I was asking you all to join? No. I have little to no sympathy in saying that none of you have a choice. I can imagine what you're feeling right now,and I know exactly what you're all thinking. I’m not alone? No you're not alone and you never have been.” Jameson hopped down from the stage and slowly began to walk towards me glancing at the other students as he walked passed. “I can imagine how hard it's been for all of you. Being forced to move from state to state and from school to school and for what? Because you're different? Because your powers get in the way? Because you’ll hurt people? What a load of bullshit. Why should any of you be punished for being stronger than the useless maggots you're forced to endure who convince you your powers are a curse just because they wish they had them?”
I wanted to disagree but it was as if he was talking directly to me. My mother always seemed so certain that I was a danger to others and that I would eventually hurt others. It had gotten so bad that I eventually stopped using my powers in the house all together, feeling too much like a burden in my own home,But as I thought of my mom's own sacrifices that she made for me I quickly shook those doubts out of my mind. She sure wasn't perfect but neither was I and who was this guy to try and tell me otherwise?
“You probably feel as if I don't know what I’m talking about.”Jameson replied as if reading my mind. “That's an understandable feeling, but I can assure you that with me you would never have to hide. Your population is steadily growing while the weaker generation that came before is slowing dying out into nothing. You all have been punished long enough and despite my methods I am not a bad man. If you don't believe me then just ask them.” He gestured to the top ten who all stood on stage obediently not moving a muscle. “ Sent her by the ones supposed to love. I rescued them from situations that would make your blood boil. From rapists, criminals, drug addicts, orphanages, they were put through hell by those that swore an oath to love them no matter what. And for what because they were inferior? No! They punished you for being better then they ever were!”
Jameson did not stand nearly a few inches away from me as he extended his hand.
“That being said.. Next semester we will officially be welcoming you all to our family. One where you don't have to hide or think less of yourself ever again...One where you are truly free.”
With no other options aside from getting electrified I had no other choice but to shake his hand. What I wasn't expecting was for him to pull into a hug while he held me so tight I almost couldn't breathe. He let out a sigh of relief almost as if he was expecting me to say no before pulling away to look at me, the smile on his face returning once again.
“You and I are going to change the world.”
