I looked at the pancake and then poked it with my fork. A piece smoothly broke off and clung to my fork. 

I slowly brought it to my mouth and sucked in the cold substance.

It tasted good.

Really good.

I wasn't expecting that. I could feel the faintest envious sensation in my gut. I wasn't really envious of anything, but the envy was just inexplicably there.

I supposed it was an 'envious pancake' for a reason.

The little red anger-berries, as gelatinous and ethereal as the pancake, created a fiery feeling in my stomach.

It was a strange breakfast, but not a bad one.

I got up and then frowned.

What was I going to do next?

What did one do in hell?

I looked over at Joseph.

I hated to bother him. 

My face went red as I thought about how I must have seemed to him, asking him so much, demanding his attention... 

Needy.

Joseph noticed me looking and smiled. "More questions?" he asked.

I nodded slowly. He beckoned me over. He seemed to be working with a customer and I hated that he was trying to make time for me too.

"It's fine," I called. "I'll just..."

"Kid, I know that expression," said Joseph. "I'm not inconvenienced, I promise."

He beckoned again and I slowly walked over. 

"Okay, meet me in ten minutes behind the cafe," he said quietly. "We've got a lot to discuss."

I gulped and nodded.
