Eron woke in the middle of the night as pain throbbed through her face. Her face felt worse off than it was after the incident. She tried to sit up when she felt herself being pulled backwards. She hadn't realized the arm around her torso at first. What grabbed her attention was the person she was pulled into her arms and legs flung about trying to get away from him before she let out a scream at the top of her lungs.
Reason jumped to his feet in an instant and pulled his sword. "What is it?"
Eron clutched her clothes and backed away from Reason no longer being held captive by her enemy.
"Oh." Reason sat his sword down and raked a hand through his messy hair. "Sorry. I don't know how that happened." He lied through a smile knowing she couldn't see him.
"Don't fucking touch me." Eron's back met with the desk. She winced in pain causing Reason to ignore her protest. He scooped her up in his arms taking her slaps as she fought him in his arms. He set her back on the bed and moved into the middle of the room.
"You are such a pain in the ass." Reason was frustrated at Eron. "I'm going to get some air."
Eron heard the door slam and flinched at the noise. She felt relaxed knowing he had left her alone.
Reason stood on the bow as the salty air stung his face. She had left a small cut under his left eye that felt both good and bad as the salt sunk in.
"Sir?" One of the crew members who awoke from the screaming came up to see what was going on.
"Hey, Martin." Reason acknowledged the man who would most likely take John's place by his observation skills.
"Things gonna be hard now, sir." Martin leaned over the railing. "The men are getting antsy. Not sure if they trust you no more."
"They have right to not trust me. I'm not sure if I do anymore." Reason sighed understanding how bad things have gotten.
"There been mutiny talk." Martin wasn't afraid of Reason. Unlike other ships he had been aboard Reason was by far the fairest man he had come to know.
"Yeah, we might be at a pass where a new crew is needed. John had a lot of influence among the men."
"That would be the best sir, but what about the sum of us that still fight for you?" Martin was worried they would all be replaced.
"Do me a favor start assessing the men and compile a list of people we could trust." He watched as Martin nodded. "It'll be about two days until we reach land. We will go over your findings then."
Martin departed back under the deck to try to get some sleep before morning. Reason watched the night crew clean and maneuver around without a care in the world. The workers at night gave little interest to politics aboard the ship as they slept through most of the madness. He felt no need to dismiss them.
Eron's face had gone down in the swelling in the past two days to the point where she could open her eyes. When she heard someone call out 'land ho' she rushed out the door. Excitement soared through her as she would soon begin her plan to escape and be free of this hell. She had momentarily forgot the pain she was in as the crew moved about getting ready to dock. One of the crew members that was with John knocked into her causing her to fall backwards into Reason's arms. He steadied her and strode up to the man who pushed her.
"Hey!" Reason grabbed his shirt no longer thinking logically.
"What?" His crewmate snapped back.
Reason didn't say another word just backed him up to the edge of the ship and pushed him off. "Swim to fucking shore." He turned quickly and shouted to Martin to add him to the cut. The crew looked at each other hearing that there was going to be a cut soon and immediately set higher standards to the tasks they performed. Martin soon became everyone best friend, but what they didn't know was he had already compiled a list of names.
By the time they reached shore Eron had been treated as if she were a princess being waited on. She anxiously awaited Reason to allow people off ship. He stood brooding over her as he gave out his orders. It felt as if he had read her thoughts and intended to make her life miserable forever.
Reason looked at Eron as the wheels were turning in her head. He knew if she had half a brain she would attempt to escape while they were here, and she was smarter than the average man so it was only a matter of time before she would attempt it. However, he had a contingency plan of his own. He watched her intently as the men left ashore, she was standing still putting on her best behavior making him smirk. Before long it was just them two left alone on the ship.
"What? You don't expect me to stay, here do you?" Eron crossed her arms in front of her chest.
"No by all means go have a good time." As soon as he said those words Eron began walking towards him to be able to leave. He quickly stuck up his leg and blocked the exit. She glared intensely at him and Reason started laughing deeply from his throat. He removed his leg and watched as she darted away from him. What he was laughing about was this was a small island in the middle of the Atlantic, a place he once knew as home. Mainland wasn't even remotely close to the island. It was a 5 hr walk from end to end at every point.
Reason was enjoying a cold glass of whiskey when Eron barged through the bar's door. "Reason!" Her voice resounded the room.
He threw back his drink. "I'll take another." He smiled at the bartender. Eron came up and snatched the glass away as soon as it had been refilled and drank it all before, he could say anything.
"You are a bastard." She had spoken to ever vendor telling them she had been kidnapped by him and they all just laughed at her and told her 'good luck.' She had run out of patience when she overheard people talking about reason drinking at the bar.
Reason held up a finger requesting another drink. He smiled at Eron with pity in his eyes. "Why can't you just be happy?" He downed another drink.
"Are you fucking drunk?" Eron felt her blood boil under the surface. "You weren't even worried that I could leave." She felt her hope sink further.
"I'm not drunk." Reason felt the world shift as he turned his head to her. "I am home!" One of his hands did a sweeping motion showing her his home.
"For fucks sake." Eron understood now why everyone just laughed at her. It wasn't they didn't believe her they just didn't care. They both took another drink.
"You didn't answer me." Reason slurred his words.
"About what?" Eron was starting to feel the warmth of the whisky.
"Why can't you be happy with me?" Reason looked at her with what he thought was the most serious face he could give.
Eron looked at his half squinting eyes, and ridiculous smile plastered on his face. "You don't have the right to ask me that."
"Why not?" He straitened his back.
"You took everything from me." She looked astonished he could even ask something like that.
"What can I do to fix it?" His smile faded away and his mind grasped onto sober thoughts with silent whispers of agony.
"You can't fix this Reason. People I love are dead because of you." Eron put all her emotions behind the word you.
Reason stood up setting his glass down. He leaned forward over the counter trying to collect his thoughts. "I love you." He felt the pain rush to his heart as he spoke his thoughts.
"I don't love you." Eron got up and left him standing alone at the bar.
Reason watched as she left feeling his heart leave with her. If he could go back, he would change every stupid mistake he made.
