Three months into hiding and Alice was struggling to keep the feeling of failure from seeping into her bones.
Aibek was physically safe. The human world was easy to blend into once they found the ideal spot. But it was his mental state she fretted over. Originally Aibek wanted somewhere near an ocean or sea when they crossed the portal arch. It was the only request he has asked for.
She sympathized. He had never left the undersea palace and now not only was he forced onto dry land for the first time, but Jasper argued that coastlines and islands would be the first places their enemies would search, which left them deep inland in a wide spread country.
It was a bitter cold place named Russia. Alice wanted to kill Jasper the moment they landed into this freezing hell that these humans passed for a home.
She absolutely loathed the cold and she knew Jasper was not a fan either. At least in their post at the cancerian palace, the entire major city was formed through a range of undersea volcanoes and hundreds of those boiling vents kept the waters there fairly warm despite the city being located at the bottom of a deep trench.
Alice peered at the young prince from the corner of her eye as she fixed the three of them lunch. Jasper sat across from Aibek, typing away on his laptop.
He was in charge of the legal aspects of their immigration. It was surprisingly easy to forge all the proper documents that made them perfectly acceptable in this country.
Aibek was silently immersed into several books. He took it on himself to learn the language, customs, and culture of Russia.
In three months he had been reduced to only speaking the usual one line morning greeting to them on the lucky days that he managed to unglue himself from his bed. He hardly ate and she knew he slept the bare requirement to function. Heavy dark circles hung underneath his eyes making his otherwise flawless pale skin stand out. He resembled a man on the verge of death's doorstep.
She sighed. This was not how the she planned for this to go and she was going to do her damnedest to help his depression. She secretly wished that they could somehow contact a Virgo healer. Assassins had no place in trying to cheer up anyone, much less her charge.
“Aibek.”
Her soft voice startled the two males. The younger peeked up from his book. His bright eyes looked at her questioningly. He had let his hair grow out, the silvery white locks brushing the top of his shoulders. It was wild and unkept, although the look was surprisingly nice in contrast to his once perfectly groomed and styled princely persona.
It was supposedly impossible colour. None of the twelve zodaics races held a gene to allow such a beautiful and mystical hue to form and yet somehow here it was. Even the heaviest glamours that Alice and Jasper could manage did nothing to hide it. Not even to make the eerie faintly glow disappear.
“I think, maybe you should enroll in a local school. It would give you something to do all day while also getting out and seeing faces other than our own.”
Jasper sputtered, choking on air as he gave Alice a withering glare. “Gee, yes, let’s just make our job so much harder.”
She bopped the back of his head as she laid a plate of food in front of him.
“We can still go with him. Hiding from humans should be an easy task for us. Plus I learned that having bodyguards isn’t all that uncommon, especially in this country.”
Aibek shrugged with mild interest. “If that will make you happy Alice. I need to practice my russian anyways. But I refuse to enter a secondary level school. University is the lowest I’ll put up with.”
Alice smiles brightly, her black eyes shining with hope. This was a better reaction than she was expecting.
“I think we can manage that.”
She felt Jasper’s eyes drilling holes in her back until Aibek left upstairs after polishing off his sandwich.
“Have you lost your mind!? Alice! We can’t protect him at all times between the two of us. I know you have a weak spot for him but fuck, just for once, can you think things through?”
Alice smiled at her partner. “He said yes. I really thought he was going shoot the idea down.”
Jasper face planted on the table. “Are you even listening to me?”
“Ooh, we should find a university with a cute uniform! He would look so adorable in a preppy style.”
“Damn it, stop ignoring me women!”
“Huh? Did you say something?”
“.....”
“We can always hire and vet human security guards. It’ll probably be smart too, since they would understand more about this world than we do.”
“SO YOU WERE LISTENING!”
“Nope!”
