After seeing Gin enter the room, Guy Montag was visibly irritated, however, he kept his qualms to himself.
After the dukes and Gin took their seats the last to enter had finally arrived. This group included all the remaining lesser nobles and vassals, comprised of more distant relatives to the throne including cousins and 2nd cousins to King Charon.
Noble titles, right to rule, and land ownership worked differently in this Kingdom than was typically known. The title of Duke was given to any prince who was not to be heir to the throne and was given upon the succession of the throne. There were only to be five dukes at any time, and thus two dukes would lose their title once Thom and Baum were to become dukes themselves.
Beyond this, the Kingdom itself was rather small, only housing the one large city known as the Kingdom of the Left. While the King had dominion over the entire land, he had no ownership. The ownership of the land was split among the dukes and lower nobles.
In a typical sense, dukes and nobles would fight over lands to gain "right-to-rule", which means increase their right to the throne if the King were to perish, and for financial gains. However, in the Kingdom of the Left, it was impossible for a duke to become King, and the lands that they fought over would hardly give them anything they didn't already have financially. Rather, the pride of owning and maintaining these lands, as well as, besting their family members in games of wit is what drove these nobles to continue to fight for these lands.
Once all the nobles had been situated around the round table and had fallen into silence Lord Charon began to speak.
"Thank you all for coming today. It has come to my attention that there are powerful invaders across the Wall. There is no guarantee that they will turn their attention towards the Kingdoms inside the Wall, but we must come up with a plan of action in the case that they do."
A murmur immediately surfaced within the room, questions of what the invaders could want were among them, but most were a call to action.
One of the lesser nobles raised the first important question to the king, "Perhaps we could get help from the other Kingdoms?"
Duke Virgil was the first to respond back, "What help? The other Kingdoms have long since abandoned worries of the forces outside the Walls. They have their Lost Kings to defend them, and unlike our God, their power has remained the same since the founding of the realm."
Duke Ciacco grimaced, "Your web runs deep little brother. Are you saying that the other Kings will let our Kingdom fall to invaders? If we fall, they are next, do they not care?"
"No, they do not care. Their age has defied their wisdom. The King of the Midpoint has long since sat on his Throne of Dirt, mentally unbound by the lack of human contact these past thousand years. Most of his Kingdom has left his side in favor of the Rear and the Right. And while the King of the Midpoint has fallen into depression, the King of the Rear has fallen for his own hubris. He will protect his vast Kingdom of his own creation, but that is as far as his pride carries him."
The lesser noble with the strongest position among his peers spoke up now, "And what of the Kingdom of the Right?"
"I'm sorry Giorno, I have yet to hear back from my man in that Kingdom. I can only assume they will not cooperate," replied Virgil.
Cormac McCarthy who had long been quiet, quietly looked down into his lap. After a brief moment, he built up the courage to look Virgil in the eyes. "The Lost Kings have sworn to protect the realm, one of them has to protect my father, right?"
Virgil frowned slightly, "My dear nephew, you know not of this world. Yes, the Lost Kings have sworn themselves to protect this realm, but in reality, they have chosen to protect the Kingdoms they hail from. The Lost King Tanyll Branwell is sworn to the Kingdom of the Rear, as well as, the Lost King Toru. The Lost King known as "Mother Earth" is sworn to the Kingdom of the Midpoint, and finally, the Lost King Morou is sworn to the Kingdom of the Right. The only help we will get from them is the hope that Tanyll and Morou built a strong wall, and that maybe Tanyll will be at the right place at the right time while guarding the Wall."
