About sixteen hours later, it was 12:11 pm the next day and the Sun was really pissed off, around 33°C outside. I didn't sleep much at night, so I really needed my coffee, but I couldn't get a chance to get myself a cup because I had so much going on... First thing after reaching work (late), I had talked to Captain Singh about the new cases he had for me, after which I'd got some paperwork done as fast as I could, before driving to Jay's place to talk to him.
I knocked at the door, "Jay?"
He didn't answer. I knocked again, "Jay, it's me, Fard."
"Dude," I heard Jay say from behind me, "Wrong door."
"Oh, oh shit, my bad."
"It's fine, that apartment is empty. Nobody lives there."
"Oh great," I sighed. "Hey man I wanted to talk to you."
"Come on, bro. My wife is inside, we can make you some coffee if you like."
"Thanks, man," I smiled and let myself in.
"Anita, this is my friend, Assistant Sub-Inspector Fard Khan," Jay introduced me to his wife. "Fard, this is my wife, Anita."
"It's a pleasure meeting you, ma'am," I said as I shook hands with Anita, who was clearly pregnant.
"The pleasure is mine, Officer. Welcome to our little house, Jay told me about you."
"You're incredibly lucky, dude," I told Jay. "You have a beautiful house, a beautiful hoodie, and a beautiful wife."
"Thanks, Fard," Jay chuckled. "Please sit down, let's talk."
"Jay, honey, can you also change your clothes please?" Anita laughed. "I'm sorry, I don't know why he likes to dress like a teenager."
"Nah the hoodie's cool," I said. "Both of you look awesome right now."
"Aww heh, you're really sweet, Fard," Anita said.
I sat down on the sofa, and a little girl entered the room and hugged Anita.
"Ah, Fard," Jay smiled, "This is Pihu, my daughter. Pihu, meet Mr. Khan, he's a good friend of Daddy's."
"Hey there Pihu!" I grinned and waved at her.
She waved back and giggled.
"Aw, I thought my cat Danny was the cutest thing in the world," I said. "I was so wrong."
"Danny?" Jay frowned.
Pihu came to me and pulled my hand, "Are you going to send my Daddy to jail, Mr. Khan?"
"Not at all, kiddo," I smiled and gave her a pat on the shoulder. "In fact, your Daddy is gonna help me arrest some bad guys today."
"Daddy is a policeman?!" she jumped.
"Alright don't bother Mr. Khan so much, sweety," Jay laughed. "He must be really tired right now."
"Ah that reminds me," Anita stood up. "I'll make some coffee for us, be right back."
"Thanks, Anita!" I said.
"Yeah dude you really need some of that coffee right now," Jay chuckled. "Thank gods that apartment's empty, or you could've made someone mad today."
"Yeah, I'm glad it's empty," I said, and then it hit me... "Oh no."
"What? What happened?" Jay asked.
"Jay..." I stood up.
"...It's not empty."
I rushed out of Jay's house and banged at the door of the 'empty' apartment. "Police! Anyone inside?!"
"Hey wait up!" Jay called out from inside his house.
"I don't think anyone's in there," I said. "Police! Open the door or the door will be forced open."
"Get back inside, honey," Jay told Anita, who was watching from her door with Pihu. "Lock the door and don't come out until I tell you to."
"The door is about to be forced open!" I announced.
"What's going on, Jay?" Anita looked really worried. "Is everything alright?"
"Everything's fine, honey. Take Pihu back inside and lock the door, I'll be back before you know it, I promise."
"THREE!" I yelled and kicked down the door to the vacant apartment.
I looked inside, my gun in my hands, ready to take down anyone who would like to surprise me. The apartment looked empty enough. The walls were a dull white colour, there was almost no furniture, and everything was covered in dust; but looking at the floor and the doors around, someone had clearly been there recently.
I scanned the living room for anything suspicious, before moving on to the kitchen, "Clear!"
"I don't know, Fard," Jay looked around. "It looks pretty empty."
"C'mon Jay, we totally forgot about that 'roof' thing! Remember after Amit sent that notification to Dru about his towed car? He went upstairs, spent five minutes there, and returned with a piece of paper. Well, he didn't go to the roof, Jay. He was here, and I'm gonna show it to you."
"So this is where they're hiding their shit?!"
"You bet it is, amigo."
After searching the kitchen, a bedroom, the balcony and the bathroom, I saw a locked door inside the second bedroom.
"It's the washroom," Jay said. "It's also the only locked door in the house, which is suspicious."
I kicked the door right off its hinges, and the interior was revealed.
"Bingo."
