Ikku arrive at what you think is the Thieves Guild. Arlo decides to stay outside as a guard while you and Anne head inside a small tavern. Inside, there's nothing remarkable.
They see a bartender and a single patron reading a book. Anne smiles and whispers, "This place better be a front, otherwise the owner will go out of business for sure."
The bartender smiles. "What would you have?"
Before Ikku can answer, Anne says, "Some ale please, for the both of us."
The bartender gave them drinks. When Anne tries to pay the bartender, he shakes his head. "It’s on the house." He gestures to the man reading the book.
Anne grins. "Hmm…I like this place already."
The patron puts the book down and looks up. He smiles and says, "Please, have a seat and we can discuss business."
For a second, they aren't sure whether they should sit down or act like they don't know what he's talking about. He notices your dilemma.
"Oh, come on now…no one gets drinks here…heck, I'm not even sure if that ale is still any good."
Anne takes a drink and coughs a little. "Not the best I've had…but definitely not the worst, either." She takes another swig.
Ikku and Anne decide to sit down at the table with him.
He puts his book away as you sit down. "I own this wonderful establishment…"
"My apologies," Anne quips.
He smiles and continues. "It's a good place to do business…the foot traffic is low, and the building is rather unnoticeable."
"I assume when you say 'business,' you mean something other than serving food and drink," says Anne.
The man nods.
He takes a good look at Ikku and Anne. "Two trained mercenaries at my tavern. Today must be my lucky day."
"How so?" asks Anne.
The man chuckles. "You two are exactly what I need to help complete a job, and usually I don't get such high-quality fighters strolling in here."
"You known us?", said Ikku.
The man nods. "Don't get all cocky on me now…I like to keep tabs on all the mercenary groups."
He pulls out a scroll and slides it over to Anne. "I have a job, and it requires the utmost discretion."
Anne examines the scroll and looks a bit perplexed. "What am I looking at here?"
"Blueprints…to a nobleman's house. I want you to steal the contents of his lockbox. A source tell me he keeps it in his bedroom."
"My client wants all the contents inside, but specifically a correspondence of letters."
Anne frowns. "Letters? Why would he keep them in a lockbox?"
The man shrugs. "Maybe he's the sentimental type. I really don't know…or care, for that matter. The client is willing to pay a thousand Gold Pieces for their return."
Anne smiles. "A thousand Gold Pieces…that's not bad, I'd do that job."
The man shakes his head. "Not so fast…you're only getting five hundred. I mean, I need to take my cut…"
"I assume this means you’re interested in the job?"
"Yes", Ikku responded.
The man hands you the blueprints and explains the location of the target. He says it's important that the Lord is not killed. If they need to incapacitate him, that's fine, but killing him will result in less pay. He expects the letters delivered to him by tomorrow at midnight.
Anne prepares a proper outfit for the occasion, then she looks over the blueprints. "So, what's the plan?"
They head over to the target's house. It looks more like a mansion than a house. Ikku ask Arlo and Anne to find any information they can about the owner. They know that the owner is an important merchant who's known for shipping exotic goods. They also find out that the merchant tends to have guards escort him to his meetings, which are usually in the morning. There's a security patrol at night with at least two guards patrolling, while one remains inside.
That night, Ikku and Anne notice two guards patrolling the house. After Anne kills one guard, they are now outside the mansion, past the outer wall. Ikku throw your grappling hook attached to a rope up to the balcony. They start to climb up…
Inside, they notice a guard outside of a room. He seems to have dozed off. Anne suspect he's guarding something important. Ikku managed to kill the guard. The room appears to be a study of some kind and a lockbox in the corner. Ikku attempt to smash the box open! He hit the lock, but it doesn't break. Ikku had to do it several times until the lock finally gives. Hopefully, no one heard that…
Inside the box, there are several things, including a pouch of Gold, some gems, a bunch of letters wrapped together, and a seal. Anne think you hear someone walking toward you. Si, they better hurry and grab what they came for. They grabbed the letters, pouch and valuable gems!
A guard enters and starts yelling. He unsheathes his sword.
Ikku stab the guard in the throat, killing him with his dagger. He heard the footsteps of additional guards, so he is forced to run away. Ikku eventually meet up with Arlo and Anne.
The letter...
They appear to be correspondence between Lord Berenger and a Lady Farlow. They start off friendly enough, but they soon turn into love letters. Given the nature of the letters, you suspect there's some impropriety involved…perhaps an affair, or some kind of forbidden love.
The group attempt to find Lady Farlow! But she was nowhere to be found, so they decide to keep the letters and head back to the center of town.
